Title: I completely take back everything bad I said about Windows 10!!!
Post by: Morpheus on August 24, 2019, 09:10:42 PM
Well, as the title says that will explain my beliefs' in what has become known to me as being nothing but a completely kick bellybutton operating system!!! I have an HP that has its time on it. the HP desktop that I have is just over 4 years old. My hard drive want so I got the new one, a western digital 2tb. So far im loving nearly everything that Windows 10 has to offer. I was under a very wrong assumption that windows 7 was still new and had a trillion more updates. But the end of life for windows 7 was just recently called by Microsoft.

I figured it was time to load on an entirely new OS and went with the much newer windows 10! And I am so very impressed with this product. I know it aint new so cut me some slack!

                                                                        <S>Morph!

It’s still buggy but overall I can live with it.

I like how it works with my new Note 10+.

The latest versions seem to be quite well behaved. Of course there's quite a lot of tinkering to get rid of all the unnecessary apps and taking care of all the marketing orientated settings. Like: Why would the net browser need access to my camera or microphone, and why does it need to run in the background when I'm not browsing? That said, getting Windows 7 background processes below 40 isn't a simple task either.

With Windows 7 support ending soon I'll probably have to switch to Windows 10 by the end of the year. Faffing around with Windows, drivers and other software for days or weeks to get it to run like I want is not my idea of fun so its something I do as rarely as possible, my last Windows install was in 2012 when I built my current PC. To balance this waste of my time I'll probably update my CPU and motherboard as well so I at least end up with a faster PC. There are programs I run that need Windows but maybe I'll create a dual boot to a Linux distribution so I have some alternative to Microsoft's snooping.

I installed a new SSD, and installed Windows 10 onto it.
After som quirks during install got it working.

Lots of work removing (like bizman said) things that windows10 should not do, like automatically have internet explorer started (might have changed with a later release), and shutting down and uninstalling SKYPE and other programs not needed for a game computer.

What worries me is that the updates are not very consistent for an OS, with bugs and one BSOD'ed.

I've had background updates cause problems until I reboot. If you have any kind of problem with programs or controllers try rebooting first.   :aok

The latest version allows to postpone updates for quite a long time depending on the type. Previously that was possible only in the Pro version, now for all flavours.

If you have a spot on your disk drive cable (SATA 2 or 3) you can get a 240gb SSD for about $30 and install Linux on it and dual boot without affecting your hard drive or windows.  I finally gave up hard drives entirely except for a 1tb usb3 drive used for backups by using 2 240gb drives, one with Win on it for the very few apps that require Windows and one for linux mint for everything but Windows dependent gaming.  So far so good.  Hard to believe my first 10mb hard drive brick ran me $1k and now 500gb of SSD for $60.

I am dreading my postponement expiring.   There is one update that refuses to work and causes an endless loop until I pause it for six months.  Maddening.  I've tried all the fixes suggested online.   Nowhereville.

You could postpone updates before. Got the shaft when somehow missed the notice and Microshaft did the update. This was about 18 months ago.

The shaft: lost all my bookmarks as was using Firefox.

AFAIK the postponing wasn't possible for 10 Home edition until version 1903. Pro/Enterprise/Education editions have had that feature from the beginning. FWIW I have never seen an Education version, all my customers have either Home or Pro, sometimes S which has to be upgraded to Pro for it to be of any use.

Have you tried wushowhide? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/3073930/how-to-temporarily-prevent-a-driver-update-from-reinstalling-in-window)
It's basically the old Windows Update which featured hiding an unwanted update. Although the article talks about driver updates, the Microsoft personnel suggested me to use it for pausing a version update. Can't tell how it works with the current versions, though, but as it's free and doesn't require installing it's worth a try.

You are.correct. Home could not postpone.

I prefer using Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB (Long Term Service Branch)

It cost a lot and can be hard to get, unless you register and become a member of MS insiders program or are part of MSDN  or Tech  Net...then you can obtain a free copy

This  version does not automatically download updates and is made for government, military, hospital networks, corporations, etc...

You have a lot more control over the OS,  similar to Windows 7 and older OSes.... Cuts most of the Home/Pro/Enterprise bloated down crap out.....

After about a week or more being stuck with this OS I am nothing but still amazed at how incredibly smart this flippin OS really is. I will never go back to windows 7 after being "stuck" (yeah right) with this tremendously smart bellybutton brain inside my desktop. Now, in saying all that I WILL ALWAYS LOVE WINDOWS 7!!! Its still as hell a very strong OS!

If you have a valid copy of win 7 you can STILL get the free windows upgrade in spite of the fact that it is supposed to be ended.
Evidently nobody told the people that run the microsoft site
I just did it myself about a month ago
Just follow the instructions here
https://windowsreport.com/windows-10-free-upgrade-2018/

Im still getting used to it from XP.
It has some things I like and some I dont. for example I would much prefer the XP start menu as opposed to windows 10 listing all my programs automatically

Oh and in case you are wondering how I upgraded form XP to 10. I didnt. I built a new system and have a copy of 7 which I installed.
Which kept sending me a nag message that basically said my system was too good/new for windows 7 and would keep giving me options to buy new computers with 10 pre installed.
After hunting around I found a few articles that claimed that in spite of the upgrade program supposedly ending you could still get the upgrade for free. So I figured I had nothing to loose and low and behold..it worked.

That part is actually pretty easy. Instead of launching to the dang Win10 list of application, you can launch directly to the old desktop. I'm embarrassed to admit that it's late and I haven't the energy to research and explain it tonight, but if no one else does before I wake up tomorrow, I'll research it for you. I never see that screen unless I deliberately call it up.

Oh, and my Win10 box looks much like a Win98 box.

As Drediock said, Windows 10 can still be acquired for free as an upgrade.

There's a topic in Hardware and Software about how to: https://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,397823.0.html (https://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,397823.0.html).

And it has been discussed several times on various topics on this BBS since the nagging offer ended, i.e. since 2016.

If your motherboard has a M2 slot you need to put a SSD in there. They are really quick. Read speeds of 3500 or faster.
Apps open as fast as a blink. The price of SSD's has really come down. Make that the M2 your boot drive.

For startup and app opening speed any SSD will be fast as lightning. The differences between different connectors are measurable, that's true, but when you're talking about lightning speed can you tell the difference between lightnings?

You won't notice much difference between a SATA SSD and a M.2 NVME SSD in load times really. In synthetic benchmarks maybe, or copying large files from one NVME SSD to the next. I have tried both and its probably just best to go with a really high capacity SATA SSD drive for the money.

Try a SSD benchmark app. You will see the difference. Tom's Hardware Forum has a couple for free.

There's no arguing about differences in benchmarks. They're indeed measurable and comparable. The point is, can your eyes see the difference in real life tasks like opening or saving a file, or starting a program? Of course if there's no significant difference in the cost, getting the best/fastest is a better choice. Paying double isn't. At the moment it seems that the cost of SSD's is roughly the same independently of the connector. Also most modern motherboards have both SATA and M.2 slots. So for a new build M.2 may well be better but for replacing an old HDD with an SSD on an older motherboard SATA would be the more cost effective choice.

Here's what Microsoft tells about it: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compare-windows-10-home-vs-pro (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/compare-windows-10-home-vs-pro)

For a home user, I can't see any benefit in the pro version now that the latest version update (1903) added the option for delaying updates.

I recently reinstalled windows 10 home back onto my laptop and I will tell you all that I ABSOLOUTLY LOVE THIS OS!!!
I'm never going to waste both my time and very important money to give me a Windows 10 pro because its pointless for me and most of you out there.

This is currently the smartest and most intelligent software that I have ever installed onto any of my computer's! And what's more is that its actually a delight software to use.

Yepp. I like the current version, too. There's so many time saving features that when I get to maintain an older OS I automatically try to use certain paths with them as well. It sure has evolved and improved a lot since 2015!

Not saying I like all the features, though. There's quite a lot of similar marketing gimmicks that keep me away from social media (except for this and another forum) but it can be tamed quite a lot.

OK so I'm sorry to ask you again but I did find a place https://softwarelicense4u.com/us/windows-10-professional-oem?gclid=CjwKCAjw8ZHsBRA6EiwA7hw_sea8bQroD62sgZbnlNY4YnQhRLlvNAIRk61wNHC2PBSEA4licqwtohoCNX8QAvD_BwE
that offers Windows 10 Pro for $35. Again this is for my desktop and is entirely private and not ever for business or anyone else but me. So what do you all think about this upgrade?

Thanks again!!   Morph

As FLS said.

Just go to the Start menu, click Settings, click Update & security. In the Activation section you can see if the OS is activated. If it shows "Windows is activated with a digital license ", your Windows 10 is genuine.
