Flying the FW 190 A-8 has the advantage of being able to lose part of a wing and being able to land with little effort. Hell, I've had both wings clipped and was able to land by varying throttle input.
But I've only been able to land without a rudder (and without spreading my plane over an acre) on very few occasions.
Is there any sort of methodology that can be used to keep a plane controllable with the loss of rudder? :joystick:

If you still have the tailplane for stability you might have a chance. You can roll to initiate some yaw. Best bet is to have two engines and duel throttles.

okay, it's worth a shot. Too bad there is no way we can "train" for this sort of occurrence.

Set up a private arena with a buddy to shoot off your rudder. Fly next to a bomber so only one or two guns are used.
Use the TA map and you can air spawn at the bombing range.

Might be fun to even the odds in the dueling arena.

I lost the left horizontal stabilizer from a 109 K-4 to ack last night. It made the aircraft more manouverable without any loss of elevator authority. It flew like a F-4 but with a little nervousness in the vertical. One could take advantage of this. Just shoot a horizontal stabilizer of a buddy with the 30 mm and have yours removed by the killshooter.

Seems some planes can fly without a rudder albeit impaired, while others can't fly at all. Landed some and not others just like mentioned aboove...

The 38 can fly with both rudders gone. It is dicey but can be done.

Mosquitoes can fly and land with the entire vertical tail missing.
Quite easy as long as you do not get too slow. Differential throttling makes it super easy.

Most planes without a vertical stab will go out of control since they become inherantly unstable. Of note, too big of a vertical stab can actually be counter productive which is why engineers have to size it appropriately to relative to the wing size.
Biggest issue with just losing a rudder is loss of aim. I cant believe I was ever able to get a kill when I first had a joystick that was a non twisty.
