Title: Just watched the new Midway movie.

They really can do some amazing things with the CGI, however it seems any WWII air combat movie has to be a video comic book these days. The CGI was pretty good, I was surprised to see they actually added some lesser known aircraft like the TBD Devastator and the E13A1 Jake. I also saw some Nells at one point during the Marshall Islands raid.. I was very disappointed in the fact that all the CV based Zekes carried the Akagi markings none of the other carriers markings were represented. Plus I don't recall seeing one American fighter plane in the whole movie. I thought the portrayals of McClusky and Best were comical and the story line was lame. The combat sequences were terrible, too busy trying to squeeze in so much stuff in every single frame. The Japanese planes constantly flying between the docked battleships during the Pearl harbor Raid belonged on the short bus. The two dead stick landings the Best character did on the Enterprise seemed to be dreamed up by an eight year old. I was very disappointed, but after what they did in the Pearl Harbor movie, I wasn't surprised. Having just finished the book Shattered Sword before seeing the movie probably didn't help my opinion of it.

The buttered cheddar popcorn at the drive-in was good. Second feature was Knives Out. That woke us up a bit. Recently saw 1917. It was ok-ish. Kelly cried from the moment Blake (edited not to spoil) until the end.

I enjoyed it, it was miles above Pearl Harbor as far as entertainment value.
I welcome all movies like this and try to stay grounded, expecting some hollywood craziness. Not every film can be Band of Brothers or Pacific.

It was good for today's social apologist politically correct bullcrap they are spewing. I wouldn't say it was perfect, they really didn't explain 'Midway' and it was hard to follow the war strategy. I too was disappointed that there were no American fighter planes. I thought some parts were cheesy. However, they threw in some unexpected surprises and the war scenes were intense and plentiful. I enjoyed that there was a battle almost every 15 minutes and some of them were edge of your seat type battles. They really showed how brave those pilots were and gave credence to both sides. They kept out all of the lovey dovey sex crap which was nice. I thought it was far better than Pearl Harbor and much more entertaining. I was happy they had more battles than character building. The CGI really was good. It was a good one for the big screen.

Agreed but with 1 exception, having been in a flight crew towing targets for Crusaders and Destroyers, we never approached the dive angles in the New Midway... but having said that, there is no way a plane of that era could drop a bomb at 1200-1300 ft and pull up without the crew blacking out :salute

I just watched it.
Some things were Hollywood hokum. Can't get away from Hollywood hokum because Hollywood folks tend to have little conception of how basic physical processes work and to think pictorially, like for a comic book.
But some of it was accurate and good. They had correct plane types. They mentioned little things that a lot of people don't know that could have had a major impact, like the Japanese not taking out the fuel tanks and what that would have meant, and the B-26 from Midway narrowly missing crashing into Nagumo and taking out the Akagi. It even had occasional things that I didn't know (and I've read several books on Midway and a book about VT-8), such as Eugene Lindsey's crash prior to the Midway mission and still going on the Midway mission.
Overall, it was in a completely different league than the likes of Pearl Harbor.
Also, I respect it because it was a project of passion for the director. He was very interested in Midway and read a lot of books on it. He wanted to make an accurate movie. He worked for years to get funding lined up. I respect that he worked to get it made, with a desire for accuracy, and did the best he could in that regard.

I thought it was good. It did portray admiral Nagumo as a fool though.
