My grandfather helped build that boat, he was a pipe fitter for EB.

I was in 5th Grade.  I remember the sudden worry.  One of OUR subs sank?  How can that be?  Was Weekly Reader headlines.

Definitely a different time.  People now probably wouldn't act the least bit surprised.

I served as a sonar technician on two submarines. Nothing but respect for the men that went down on all of our submarines with the our most recent nuclear subs, Thresher and Scorpion, holding a special place in my heart. It was a very big deal in the global submarine community when both the Kursk and San Juan sank. All submarine sailors share a common respect for each other.
