Title: Need Jabo gunsight
Post by: Max on April 10, 2020, 03:34:27 PM
Lately my dive bombing and rocket attacks have been atrocious. Any have a gunsight with bomb & rocket markers that they like?

Thanks  :salute

Any markings will only work at specific speeds, angles, and altitudes. It's like your gunsight, it's a reference, there's no guarantee you hit where it's pointing.

You will improve rocket and bombing attacks by practicing consistent dive angles, speeds, and release altitudes. You can do this offline or in the TA with the green cross showing the impact point. This will give you the correct sight picture, with or without reference marks on the gunsight, and let you practice consistent attack profiles.

What FLS said, I have to go back in there every few weeks to re-train lol.

I'll second the vote for "retraining" or offline practice.  If I haven't done any ground attack in a while, I find that doing some practice runs offline make a huge difference.

Is there a better vehicle to sharpen skills  other than the dive bomb module in the TA? Diving in on facs or big circles doesn't seem to offer much refinement

Use the Vbase south of the strats.

Try to start your attack at the same altitude above the target.

Use a visual reference to roll into a consistent dive angle.

Stabilize your dive and watch the green cross move to the target, that's the sight picture you want to learn, the right instant to release weapons, that's what you're practicing.

Don't practice using the green cross to hit the target, practice using the green cross to learn the sight picture.

Releasing closer to the target is more accurate and egressing at tree top levels makes you a harder target for AA.

FLS's advice is sound.  The other thing I do quite often if I haven't jaboed for a while (IE- not very polished on the right sight picture) is to come in high and dive vertically over the target.  The closer to vertical you are on bomb release, the closer it will be to your gunsight pipper.  If you're diving straight down, it hits pretty much dead on the pipper.

Personally, for HVAR rockets, an hour or so looking at the sight pictures you need to hit with them from different angles should show you where to put the pipper.  I find them very consistent.  I have a hell of a time hitting with Russian or German rockets though.  Never used them enough to figure them out.

Wiley.

Also Bustr's gunnery training terrain is great for practice. Has air starts and plenty of stuff to drop on including ships.

Where are the airstarts?

The terrain is really small. Just an island with a bunch of targets all over it. I know the NW one puts you over the field to the NW. There's another one puts you approaching the ships to the North side of the island so I'm guessing it's the north one?

Forgot I had this in my terrain folder...checking the launch points now. Thanks Drano!
