Vacriu has a new addition to the P-38 family.
Lt. William Lassiter
P-38L-1-LO “Miss Sis II"
S/N 44-25006
82nd FG, 96th FS
Italy, 1944-45
A special thanks to Lyric1 for his research on this skin.
This is the Lockheed P-38L-1-LO "Miss Sis II" (S/N 44-25006) flown by Lt. William "Bill" Lassiter of the 82nd Fighter Group, 96th Fighter Squadron from 13 September 1944 - 22 February 1945. Miss Sis was his the childhood nickname of his wife, Annie Delle Lassiter (Crigler, married 5 June 1942) with whom he had three children.
On 22 February 1945 while on a strafing mission near Munich, Germany, Bill took his flight down to attack a train hiding in some trees. Hit by flak, Bill's Lightning suffered severe damage including the loss of an engine. He radioed his wing man, Lt. Kenneth Herrick that he was going to have to make a crash landing. After safely belly landing the plane he waved at Kenneth to let him know that he was okay before running away from the area. He would eventually be captured and spend the rest of the war as a POW.
Bill reverted to inactive service in October 1945. In September 1952 he returned to active duty in the US Air Force. From June 1953 to June 1954 he was with the 3rd Bomb Wing in Korea where he served as a base supply officer and flew C-47 transport planes. As a Captain he served as an instructor at the USAF ROTC Headquarters Air Command and Staff School at Mississippi State College.
On the evening of 12 November 1954, Bill and fellow instructor Edwin Ellis were flying a North American T-6 "Texan" trainer (s/n 51-14805) for a proficiency flight. The plane crashed about 6 miles from the Starkville Airport, killing both Bill and Edwin.
The tail section of this P-38 was recovered with the yellow paint of the 82nd FG still intact and is on display at the Wings Remembered Museum in Tennessee.

Never thought I would find research material for a skin from a source like this.
A German company is turning WWII wrecks into furniture.
Parts of "Miss Sis II" now stools.

Well done, V.
-
One of the prettiest metal P38s I've ever seen. :aok
-
I'm no skinner....but does the red look a little too....bright?
Otherwise a great job and will likely be my new L skin as the 20th FG one is my new J skin.
-
Great looking skin Vraciu, although I agree with Spikes that the red looks a bit too saturated.
-
It is a beautiful job sir as usual but my very first impression of the screenshots were "wow that red is too bright" lol. Not a criticism just an observation. :aok
-
Not just the red though, but the yellow is also pretty strong as well. Otherwise, looking mighty fine. :aok

Vraciu used an original colour photo that I provided him of a sister aircraft from the same squadron.

He has made some adjustments though.
Well, crum. You never get a second chance to make a first impression. :bhead
I had my opacities for the colors all set to 100 by accident. I never noticed it. I guess staring at a monitor all day dulls the senses.
Thank you everyone for pointing it out. Devil and I also had a conversation over it offline and he agreed. So.... Here is what it looks like now. I posed it at the same angle for different times of day in the first and last shots to show a comparison. The lighting does flare the red up some when hit directly. I can always tone it down more if needed. My goal was to hit the tone of the last image, a color shot of an 82nd FG P-38 being refueled.

Also, great work on the new skins, Devil, Greebo, and FTJR. Thank you everyone for the compliments--and to Lyric1 for his usual impeccable research.

Very nice. And a hell of a color photo too. :salute

Thanks for the help and kind words, everyone. Dale has graciously allowed me back on the forum so I can post my skins. Lyric, thank you very much for being my relay during my timeout.
Glad to be back.
My compliments to everyone. :salute

Nice improvement.
Welcome back.

Welcome back Vraciu. The colour change on the skin is a great improvement.
-
Thanks guys. So good to go as-is?
-
If you want to still adjust the red, you can try making a bit darker and desaturated. That should get it closer in tone to the reference pic.

Welcome back :)
The color match now is almost exact. They really had some intense coloring.

I would love to have a set of those! Still hate to see a combat veteran cut up, even if it is just wreckage. But...
