Title: Video card upgrade
Post by: Mister Fork on May 06, 2020, 10:45:32 AM
I upgraded my son's computer last fall - Gigabyte B450 AORUS with a AMD Ryzen 7 2700X CPU.

I'm now looking to upgrade his GTX 970 video card to a new one. Either a RTX 2060 or a Radeon 5600XT.

Conventional thinking would have from a stability perspective, that the AMD Radeon in an AMD motherboard/CPU combo is best. Both the 2060 and the 5600XT are the same price wise (about $20 difference). One has a slight edge in performance (nVidia) but the benchmark performance give the Radeon the nod.

So, opinions?

I'm using a 2060 6gb card in mine. No prob with AH at high settings and VR.

Also notice that there's both RTX2060 and RTX2060 S(uper) cards available.

According to this: https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html (https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html) the 2060 Super is superior to the other two. Compare prices and if you get the S for the same price that'd be the best bet.

Does the S come with an old phone booth?

Instead of the 6GiB 2060/5600XT I'd throw in the 8GiB RX5700 for just a little more.

Did you mean to type AMD RX5700 or did you mean for it to be RX5700XT?

I would push for the AMD radeon RX5700XT .....and go with either the ASUS, XFX or Sapphire brand

I'm all for keeping it all "AMD" as much as possible

I haven't followed up with the news lately, did AMD & Samsung's merger go through?

Did AMD figure out how to make good video cards again?

I'd say it's like they've kinda caught up after being behind for a while. I'm waiting to see what the next Gen from each brings before making a change. Been team green for a while. Might be time to switch back.

It took them long enough...meanwhile Nvidia and Intel got to hold everyone hostage pricing wise.

My bottle neck is definately  my vid card . I also have a GTX970 and whatever the quorum suggests for the price I may make the leap. Someting around $200 wouls be nice. (stands back)

RX 5700 is just a little more expensive than RX5600XT and somewhat on par with RTX2060 but is faster and has more VRAM.
The XT is faster but also more expensive.
Avoid AMD Gfx from Asus at all cost - too many broken cooler designs or other problems on those cards. One should opt for Sapphire as known best quality AMD Gfx manufacturer.
