Title: After all these years, Aces High is still amazing despite the decline in numbers
Post by: streakeagle on May 08, 2020, 09:32:44 PM
The plane set hard to beat. From early war to late war, at least one variant of the major aircraft are here from most nations and theaters with only a few exceptions and they are all flyable and aircraft with gunners/bombardiers can be crewed by other players besides the pilot.

The flight models are still among the best available. If you can prove one is wrong, HTC will correct it. But I haven't seen a whole lot of corrections in years. The low fruit has already been picked a thousand times over by various fans/experts. Anything missed is only speculative or else HTC would fix it.

The skins available for any given type are usually diverse and include some of the most famous and/or best looking ones.

The VR implementation is as good or better than any other flight sim. You feel like you are in a cockpit and really flying and you can fly and fight successfully despite the current resolution limitations of VR.

The bad news is that some of the cockpit models/external models/textures are horrendously old. One of the things I always looked forward to was the next new aircraft to be released and the next old aircraft to be updated to current standards. There hasn't been much movement in this area for quite some time :( I miss the days when the crowded arenas also meant plenty of development funding with frequent patches provided new or improved content.

I hope the market comes around to loving AH again so that HTC can continue to keep its product up and running for the rest of my life. I never really enjoyed the MA very much and less so with the reduced numbers. I have never made the time to fly in the scenarios that are probably the best aspect of this game as a sim. But I still love the core engine and have periodically subscribed to help pay back HTC for giving me a great sim to fly while I was a poor starving college student and couldn't afford the $30/month subscription of that time. Free HTH in AH1 was great and I spent as much time as I could nearly every night flying it in the 2001-2002 time frame when I was finishing my degree.

HTC, thank you for all the years of entertainment flying cartoon airplanes in a pretend world. May you reap great profits from your hard work as long as you live!

You are an old timer if you recall the $29.95 a month fee

20+ years here

Yes other sims have prettier cockpit graphics but who is looking at that when the a2a starts?

Have not found a sim I enjoy as much as aces high and I have tried most of them

GAME STORM!
At least I think that's what the old website was called.

It's kind of trippy, I started in AW while still in high school. Now all these years later, I'm watching my 6 year old fly(offline) using all my old gear.

While you guys were playing AW and Warbirds, I was a sonar tech on a submarine 1989-1997. I didn't even have my own PC until I went back to USF to finish my engineering degree in 2000. Prior to that, I had played Jane's Fighters Anthology on a work laptop with only keyboard/mouse controls and my submarine had a PC with Chuck Yeager's air combat sim on it in the mid 90s, again keyboard/mouse. So, when I got my own PC around August of 2000 and made sure it was good enough for flight sims, I had downloaded Warbirds 2.7x and eventually stumbled on to Aces High. Initially, I liked Warbirds better because of the offline single player mode and huge plane set. But I eventually came to understand the difference between a 3d cockpit and 2d bitmaps and also found the flight modeling much better in Aces High.

My only real complaint about Aces High back then besides the lack of a P-40B/C was the accuracy of the guns. I could regularly hit with 0.50 cals at ranges of 800-1,200 yards, enough to shoot off tail surfaces. This also made guns exceptionally effective in a head on. I always set my sights to the max range adjustment to take advantage of this. But Aces High 2 changed something... seemingly the stability of the aircraft as a gun platform, so the guns have behaved much more realistically ever since. Setting the sights for more than 300 or 400 yards is not very effective, just as experienced by pilots in WW2. I can still get hits at 800 yards against AI flying in a steady circle, but not with laser precision. It now wastes a lot of ammo to do so, and against maneuvering targets, it is almost useless. In my opinion, it would be very difficult for the competition to produce a flight sim that had a comparably sized flyable plane set with equal or better physics. I love DCS World, but that level of modeling guarantees that the number of flyable aircraft doesn't grow very fast and they have yet to produce a useful number of historical terrains. The flight models have much greater potential for realistic behavior at the edges of the envelope and for engine performance/failures, but that potential is limited by how difficult it is to get the modeling correct even if you can get enough information to do so.

Was a very nostalgic Saturday this past week. We were on the small island map and Bish were going for the win. Spent most of the night playing "Wack-a-Mole" chasing the NOEs all over the map.  :devil

I have tried them all, so far nothing compares to AH3 in my book. Thanks Dale for all you do, and for only $16.03 per month. ( that includes local sales tax)  :rock :rock

I use to run it at bare minimum because my computers always sucked. It's a step up for me.

Amazing how many years have passed.  I followed HT from Genie AW in 1995 and remember attending Warbirds Con 1998.  I still have video of the seminars given and my signed copy of "Air to Air" by DocDoom.

I also have my paperback "Warbirds - The Story So Far" that I bought in 1999.

https://www.amazon.com/WarBirds-Story-So-Far/dp/0958519498

Even has my old "Confirmed Kill" / "Warbirds" squadron the "Wings of Death" in it.

God, I'm old!!!

Air to Air Gunfighter by Geof DocDoom Evans was just the instructional book I was looking for when I located a copy years ago.
