Title: P-38J "My Little Pig" Lt Jack Jarrell, 370th FG 485th FS
Post by: oboe on June 22, 2020, 05:07:10 PM
"My Little Pig" was flown by Lt Jack Jarrell of the 485th FS.  Aircraft was lost on December 14, 1944 when Jack was hit in a dogfight and bailed out.

Yes, but the red and blue look off to me.  Almost neon.  Nice work overall, though.  An unusual scheme.

I know you're trying to create an image table, but from a user standpoint you're probably best just stacking them with a width around 800.

I based the colors on this image:

Wanted to see a what a lighter blue would look like.  In the B&W photo, the spinner nose cone has a lighter shade than the base.  The profile I used for the original was this one:

I guess my idea of displaying the images in a table of thumbnails won't work - I don't like the way the images open up offcenter when you click on them.

The blue is it a bit bold, but it does not glow in the slightest. The red looks spot on to me.

Lots wrong with this. Whoever made it should go back and redo it based on your work.  :aok

It sure does in the head on shot.

I know how troublesome lighting can be especially with reds.   It's bolder than mine was that you had me desaturate.

Still a good looking plane.

Dude, your red was glowing. Oboe's does not.

That's more like it.

The nose on your airplane has a darker red than the spinners I think.   That looks right to my eye.

Yeah, that looks good. If you can get your blue looking closer to the shade here, it will be perfect.

Take your blue, desaturate the tone until it gets a bit more dull. That should lighten it a little as well.

Here is the spinner from my diffuse file - overlayed on an ANA chart.  Its not that for off from True Blue.  Old skin was based on insignia blue I think.

I don't know where the War Thunder skinner got his shade, though its close to my original skin.   But, in a B&W photo wouldn't that darker shade of blue show up as darker than the red?

I agree the nose red looks darker, not sure how that happened - it should be same shade.  I'll look at it.  I'm bleary-eyed right now - took me the last couple of days to adjust the red trim pixel by pixel on that nose - the stretching is a nightmare on this model here.

That's really close. Like I said, it just needs to be desaturated to look less intense in game.

Yeah.  For your style, it needs to be toned down slightly.  Your skins are like paintings so you'll need to keep that in mind especially the way the lighting messes with stuff.

That nose red looks better than the spinner and upper wing root.

It's well done regardless.

Yes, welcome back to the nightmare that's the P-38 object stretch extravaganza.  People have NO idea.   Lol.

Great looking skin Oboe. As for the colours judging by Lyric1's photo it looks like the blue needs to be less saturated with a hint more red in it. Although WW2 photos' colour reproduction can be a bit iffy sometimes they are still a much better reference than any profile.

Thank you Greebo, and thanks to Lyric for the color photos - I'd didn't think such color photos of the 485th's squads colors existed.  Lyric, you always come through!

Seems pretty clear that the spinner's color is closer to insignia blue than the ANA True Blue.  The War Thunder skinner had it right.

Great find on the photo.

It shows how flat that red actually is, too, even in the light.  Closer to what's on the nose of Oboe's skin.

In this picture the spinner band red looks darker on the right engine (our left) than the left engine (our right).   Paint wearing off?

Went back to my original skin's blue spinners and tweaked some more.  I learned that the darker red on the nose that Vraciu liked was caused by the weathering streaks and gun muzzle exhaust.  hard to see on the '38 because of the stretching - just turned in more or less into a blotch of grime.  I reduced the opacity somewhat, and added grime to the inner wing fillets.

Thanks very much guys.  Much credit to Greebo; following the techniques described in his P-38 skin build log made a big difference, I think.   Lots of helpful techniques, and information about the Normal map I don't think I would've figured out on my own.

And thanks to Lyric as well.  He's just indispensable with those reference photos.

Yes, the spinners - looks like it'll have to be on a natural metal bird though.   Robbin's OD bird had the green-trimmed spinners.   Unless Lyric can come up with photo evidence of the colorful spinners on Jandina with an OD finish...
