Many thanks to Lyric1 for digging up some good info on this one, particularly the right side of the airplane.
Capt. Pete Nowick
P-51D-25-NA "Anything Goes" (559)
S/N 44-72870
506th FG, 458th FS
Iwo Jima - Summer, 1945
This is the P-51D-25-NA "Anything Goes" (s/n 44-72870) coded 599 flown by Capt. Pete Nowick of the 506th FG, 458th FS out of Iwo Jima in the summer of 1945. The 458th was established in October 1944 as part of the newly activated 506th Fighter Group and began training immediately with the North American P-51 Mustang for long-range escort duty.
The 458th participated in the Group's first VLR (Very Long Range) mission to Japan on 28 May 1945, a strafing attack on Kasumigaura Airdrome on Honshu. On 10 June 1945 the 458th escorted B-29s to Tokyo. Engaged by some forty Japanese fighters, the 506th claimed ten kills without loss. Six of the victories were scored by 458th pilots, with Capt. Peter Nowick being credited with a double.
A history of the 506th sums it up nicely.
Picturesque, mustachioed Capt. Pete Nowick, the Mad Russian, bagged two Franks or Tojos. His wingman Lt. Neil Smith remarked later, "I called out the bogies to him and he went after them. And boy, did he get them".
Before hostilities ended the 458th had downed 22 enemy planes in aerial combat--making it the highest scoring squadron for the 506th Group--probably destroyed three, and damaged two more.
This Mustang is alleged to have gone by the name "ANYTHING GOES" and a picture of an engine cowling with this nose art on it supposedly exists. However, there is some dispute over whether or not that nose art was actually applied to this particular aircraft—and as all of the photos of it I have show it without it, I have chosen to depict it in that fashion. The side numbers appear to have been hand-painted without stencils and thus do not match from one side to the other.
(Edit in: Just realized this is a -25 so I’ll have one more modification to it before submission. Darn it.)

Thanks guys. When I took the screenshots of this one I was really excited and pleased with how they turned out. I’ve been tweaking my metal with every skin and am closing in on my goal.
“Fighter Gunnery, Rocket Firing, Dive Bombing - Air Forces Manual No.64" apparently explains it. Lyric may have this one in his collection.
To quote a post from another forum:
“[The pilot] set up paralleling the target and whichever line matched the target's location, that would be what diving angle [was] used to reach the target.“

Great looking skin Vraciu. If you submit this quickly I can approve it for inclusion into the pending batch.

Thanks, G. I’ll give it a shot and let you know. I’ve gotta switch the elevators to NMF since this is a D-25. Not sure if I should do that now or save it for an update.

Great looking skin, V. Impressive metal effect; those screenshots really show it off well. Especially like the contrast with the diagonal painted stripes.

It's submitted, G. I'll make corrections later. Thanks again.

I continue to laugh at my very first skin attempt. Putting it all in perspective... To think it took me MONTHS to do this (with one layer, btw):
Now I can make a skin in a few days (I'm maxed out at 62 layers with my software unfortunately):
Then I did an update and thought, wow. I'm getting somehwere!!!

We have all come a LOOOOOOOOOONG way.

Yes you've made great strides.

Nice job on the Mustangs!
What would you think about refreshing my Dad's B-25 that's in the game? 345th BG / 501st Squadron Nose Art "Quitch"?
Would love to see it updated!

Thanks, bro. I am not opposed to that, but Greebo is our guru on the B-25. Have you seen his work? You can't go wrong having him do it if he's willing.
I'll check the adoption list.
-
I don't see it on the adoption list but that hasn't been updated in awhile. I'll ping Greebo.

I think the default skins are controlled by Hitech and needs special attention by him.
-
Sorry but the default skins for each ride are built into the game download and can't be updated by skinners. Hitech would need to replace it with another B-25C skin, adding this new default into a game update for all players to download. He could then put Quitch into the list of skins that can be adopted by skinners. Its a fair bit of hassle for him though, so I don't know if he'd want to do it.
-
I see. Thanks, gentlemen!
-
Stupid question, is "Quitch" the default B-25 skin?
-
Stupid question, is "Quitch" the default B-25 skin?
Not a stupid question; I just checked and Quitch is not the default B-25C skin. "Labor Pains" is the default. Quitch is listed as 345BG/501BS by Fester.
-
I think Quitch used to be the default skin, most likely it got changed when all the default skins had bump and spec maps added. Fester has said it is OK for his skins to be updated by me so I'll ask Hitech if he can add it to the orphaned skins list. Once that happens I will be able to adopt the skin and create an up to date version of it. Some RL photos of the aircraft would be helpful though.
-
Is the orphan list being updated?
(If we're waiting on you to update all of Fester's stuff it's gonna be awhile. Hehehe. He’s got quite the catalog of skins out there.)
-
As soon as I read the subject, I immediately thought of Kate Capshaw.
-
Pics are kind of hard to find. I have a book on the Air Apaches that has some shots. I will scan and upload. The Quitch pics will be similar to these.
I researched the squadron records and he actually flew this one the most. Potent Cock :)
See attachments.

What I have.
You have two choices of nose art as well.

That nose art reminds me of the former Mrs. Killer V. She used to ride a broom, too. :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl :rofl

lyric1,
Thanks! Those are the pics from Warpath Across the Pacific by Hickey. That's one of the books I have and the one I would have scanned. Saved me a bunch of trouble there!
-
Thanks Lyric1, those photos will do nicely.
I've requested Hitech transfer the Quitch skin to the orphaned list so I can adopt it.
I'm not sure if Hitech can do block transfers of an ex-skinner's body of work or whether he needs to transfer them skin by skin. If its the latter then it is not going to be practical for him to transfer hundreds of old skins over so best bet for now is to just PM if you want a specific skin moved across. So long as the original skinner's game account has been dormant for a year or two it should not be a problem.
-
Just a quick thought - Greebo can you ask HiTech to transfer all of Larry/TrueKill's skins into adoptable status when he does Quitch? Based on Larry's latest post sounds like we can get the ball rolling for his skins too.

Yes, there are several of his skins I'd like to tackle. It would be much easier having the list updated.

Also, I'm starting a virtual museum of older skins. If you think to take a screenshot of previous work before changing it maybe we can upload them. I've saved the original diffuse BMPs just in case the skinner wants them someday.

I may start getting shots of them flying in the game instead of just the viewer, I haven't decided.
-
I have PM'd Hitech to ask what the situation is with block transfers of a skinner's body of work to orphaned status. I'll let you all know what he says, most likely in a new thread to avoid hijacking Vraciu's one any more.

No worries, bro.
The only bad publicity is no publicity. :aok

Nice job Lyric! I've read the story of his Dads B25 before. The complete story of struggle to get the craft back to base. Toad's Dad was a great Pilot.

nice vracui, i think I'll fly that point skin so i can be incognito. too many know i fly the redtails skin.

All except the second one that was from another book.

All this talk of Quitch reminded me of a visit my Dad made to this BBS. He answered a few questions on the B-25 for folks. Some old names in that thread for sure; April 2000! It's short.

I want to say thank you to the guys over at http://www.506thfightergroup.org/ for putting their research online. It was their website that inspired me to create this skin.
I've been emailing one of the admins there and he couldn't be nicer.
Sites like theirs are increasingly rare, which is unfortunate. This history is worth preserving. I'm glad they are doing it. Give it a look sometime when you have a moment.

Stunning.

Sadly the bulk of your text "Anything goes" is lying face up on the ground under the wing. Also looks as if the two words were painted in different colours.
Then the questions are did it have the pin up and text prior to wars end and on both sides?

Nice photo. I've compiled a bunch of 599/AG pics. I intend to post them soon. There are at least two airplanes in the AG/599 pile. Hoping we can decipher some clues.
This image will be another puzzle piece.
