I have a sound card and have both my speakers and headset plug into it with 3.5mm "hook up". i just ordered a new head set because my old one is literally holding on with duck tape and can no longer hear surround sound, I can on my speakers.
question is can i have both my speakers connected to the 7.1 sound card and have a usb headset with it's own 7.1 sound card at the same time? I only plan to use one or the other at anyone time. my mobo also supports 7.1.

Yes.
but I would have to switch from one to the other manually, correct? this is ok with me.

No. You can set it so in game your PC speakers to output game sounds and have your headset for vox.
In the sound options, select your PC sound card for speakers and select your headset to hear vox and select your headset mic under microphone. This way you can use vox without it coming out over the game sounds. This is how I have my sound set up.
