Title: P-38J "Jandina II" Capt Jay T Robbins, 8thFG 80thFS
Post by: oboe on July 18, 2020, 11:04:25 AM
Back to updating my olive drab P-38s; not many left.  Trying to create the look of a war-weary airframe with this one, I imagine the maintenance facilities at Finschhafen were fairly basic and the paint took a beating in the hot Pacific sun.  Wondering if I need to dial down the color on the spinners - I think they might be a little too intense compared to the rest of the paint on the skin?

Very impressive. You have the best P-38s in the game, Bar None.

The spinners look a little out of place vs the rest of the aircraft.  Unless you have info that shows/says otherwise, they should be toned down a little to better match the rest of the aircraft.  Doesn't look like you were too far off though, so probably not much. :)

It looks great.

I might dial the spinners back some, but nicely done regardless.

Beautifully done skin Oboe. Perhaps desaturate the red a touch, the blue looks fine. How about blurring the top and bottom edges of the red sections slightly to give the illusion of the spinners rotating in screenshots? It would look a little odd with the engines off but it might be a worthwhile trade off.

Here are the reference images I was using - no color photographs exist to my knowledge.  The colorful spinners were intended as a formation aid, so I imagine they would've received a little more care and attention than the rest of the paint on the aircraft.  But I will tone them down a bit.

Toning them down is in keeping with your style of artistry,  IMO.   They'll still be pretty bold.

Looks great, Oboe.

I agree with the others about dulling the colors of the spinners to better match the other paint work. I would also do the same with the blue in the insignias, it also looks too bold.

I like it! I would think if it was a formation aid then yea they might be brighter and kept bright.

Looks good.  :aok The profile I provided mentions the spinners were changed as a flight leader recognition so it would have brighter paint than the rest of the plane as the rest would have been worn quite a bit. The fact the colour bled through on this plane after it was transferred and repainted would indicate the colours were still bold.

I did tone the spinners down a bit but tried to leave the impression that they get better care and attention than the rest of the paint.  Found and fixed some other small issues as well.  Thanks all for your assistance and advice!  Shuffler, you're welcome - hope you get many kills in her!   Just submitted the skin; hope it makes it in time for next release...
