Title: P-51D 356thFG/361stFS Capt Donald Strait "Jersey Jerk"
Post by: oboe on September 02, 2020, 04:40:31 PM
In some ways my favorite P-51D theme, the pattern of blue diamonds on a red nose is just so wild for Group markings.  Reminds me of a court jester.

Phenomenal work on a very colorful skin.

Can't wait to see it out the window of "Skyway Chariot" or "Sleepy Time Gal" on my way into (and hopefully on the way out of) Germany in the Fortress Europe events!

That's a great looking skin Oboe, unusual scheme and the metal effect is excellent.

Never seen a P-51 with these markings, 42 YO, and just ran across this.

Different squadron within the 356th FG.   Each had its own rudder and spinner identifying color.  The 361st was blue, 360th FS was red, and the 359th was yellow.   The ground crews got pretty creative with the paint as the War was winding down in 1945.

Based on these images, it looks to me like the blue diamonds were closer to Insignia Blue than I have shown on Jersey Jerk.  And thanks guys, I appreciate the good words.

Great skin for the Stang. There is one I would love to see as well. "Stinger VII" for the Pacific as one.

I'm working on that one, actually, but I'll pass it off to anyone who wants it.

Much as I preferred the lighter, bluer blue, I darkened the blue diamonds, rudder and trim toward Insignia Blue in keeping with previous WWII color photo of the '51D from the same Group.  I also faded the insignia blue disk a bit.  Thanks to Lyric for the portrait photo of Major Strait standing near his plane; I was able to add some detail and variation to the aircraft name lettering which wasn't so apparent in the profiles I was working from.

I agree, that change in the blue is an improvement.

Is Fortress Europe FSO?

No, Fortress Europe is a bomber campaign style's event that Nefarious runs. It's usually 8th AF, but he does other designs occasionally.

There's one tonight based on the Dieppe raid in 1942.
