Title: Refrence and reaserch info, how much is enough?
Post by: whiteman on September 11, 2020, 12:09:52 PM
I'm looking into an FG-1D, #14 BuNo 87884 from VBF-85 flown by Richard T. Schaeffer, Lt.Cdr.. I've found a sight that has the aircraft history card and photos of others from that squad, of course not that one. Only reason for doing this plane is the story on the pilot and his death. The time period of his plane and final mission CAG-85 had completely switched from the lighting bolt to a "Z" for identification. That enough to go on or a no go?

Using the first photo as a base, you would be basically be making that scheme with #14 instead of #59, correct?

I think as long as you know that Lt.Cdr. Schaeffer definitely used #14 that it should be ok.

Yes sir, just a number is the difference. Yea found a very detailed account of the incident from his "long-time wingman" that sounded more like an official report than just a telling of the what happened.

I saw that on the VBF-85 site but they couldn’t dig up the info on those, all they could find is that they did have 4 -4’s by word of mouth. I’m gonna work on an FG-1D with the “Z” and probably one with the lighting bolt.

Few reference images for you.
Have one with the numbers you need just inverted.

Holy smokes, jackpot! Thanks Lyric!  Reading through their war diary they had a lot of water ditches, but with the staffing and “bomber” missions they were assigned I say it was expected. I’m reading the same info on VMF-115, the number of guys that put it down in the water safely but didn’t get out is staggering.

Those were not water ditches in the first photo they pushed them off the back of the carrier at wars end.
Per orders.

Thought that was strange looking. I knew it was cheaper for countries that leased them to Just push them overboard, didn’t realize we were doing that as well.

I'm mainly concerned that the aircraft being skinned actually existed and its obvious in this case that it did. You have photos of similar aircraft from the squadron as well as the squadron and serial numbers. So I'll happily accept it when the next skins batch is processed.

What I might object to is a skin based entirely off a secondary source like a profile, plastic kit or warbird with no WW2 documentary or photographic proof to back it up.
