Title: A Moment of Reflection
Post by: Blinky on September 25, 2020, 02:07:59 PM
What is your most prominent memory in Aces High? Doesn't have to be good!  :rock

Mine would have to be when I was very young,  10 or 11 I remember hearing an actual WWII vet (wish I could remember his name) explaining what the little leather thing on the bottom of your gunsight is. I don't even remember what he was explaining or what it's actually for but I just remember being amazed that I was getting a first hand account from an actual WWII Pilot. There were quite a few guys in the discussion, does anyone remember anything like that?  :headscratch:

That or the goon invasion. That was a beautiful day lol.  :x

Close third for that time we found Cybro :neener: :neener:

Would love to try it but have heard it's not for those who wear eyeglasses. Still the case?

It's less convenient but doable.

Many headsets allow adjustment to make room for your glasses.  My HTC Vive does.    Slightly less FOV.  Always the possibility that the glasses will rub on the VR lens.  Mine have and left a little mar spot, but it must not be in my field of vision because I don't notice it.

You can get lens inserts for some if you are not going to be sharing your headset often.  Maybe when I get the next great version I'll just go get a contact lens script optimized for the VR focus distance.

 :salute

I'm with TrackIR Now and always struggling with the settings... I'm new to VR is there a base VIVE model I should be looking for?

Some of my favorite moments were 1v1s in the old original DA with Batfink, skyrock, phish, blue knights, and the Army of muppets. Really great fights learning ACM and had a lot of fun.

I gave TrackIR a shot a few years ago. Had it not been for constantly having to center the pipper when taking a shot, I'd probably still be using it.

I have so many memories from the DA, it would be really hard to choose one lol. I've spent at least 65 % of my total playtime there honestly.

It's useful at times but difficult with my setup i guess.. I get rather limited view esp from top back left and right. I'm still tweaking settings and what not every day to try to get it perfect lol.

First FSO with VF-17, we were in F4U’s and a squad of zekes turned and dove into a fight below us. It looked like a scene from a movie. We jumped them and we had at least 10 kills, pretty sure it was a lot more than that.

Deflection shots are easier. Long range shots on low aspect targets are harder due to lower detail

Legally blind here without glasses...

My vive pro lenses and glasses have scratches on them.

I just think its a scratched up canopy realism setting and look through them :)

It was sureal... He has passed on.... Miss his voice and missions..I think his callsign was ET37.. Forgive my memory I am old...PS.. His memorial flight I participated in was epic and allot of us were in tears

Nope nope nope. You can get inserts for prescription lenses that clip into most VR headsets. Way more comfortable than trying to wear glasses. I've had mine for 3 or 4 years now. I would highly recommend the Oculus Quest 2 (just announced) as a great starting point. Acts as a standalone and a PC VR headset. Needs a good CPU though.

Can you please provide more info on the prescription inserts? Never heard of them.

Prominent memory is when I get to fly with a bunch of team mates in a good furball.  Flying a mission and capturing a base.  Intercepting a base take attempt and stopping it cold.

Really anything that has to do with flying with fellow pilots.

I can't for the life of me remember because it was so obvious and practical like perhaps for turning on the GS or something similar, that it came up un list of conversation about being a pilot etc. I will look it up.

Closest thing I could find with keywords I used is a "Rubber Crash Pad" only found in a diagram with no explanation. I assume it's for resting your hand, that rings a bell the most for me.

p.s. I'm sure we have some pilots in here that know that might chime in!  :airplane:

Disregard that!

It's a crash pad from preventing the gunsight from stamping your head with logos from it's base lol. "Crash" pad. :bhead

I have many fun memories of AH. Many. One of my favorites will always be going toe to toe vs a good P51D in my 190A-5. We merged at 20k, and the fight dipped below 18k for about 15 seconds, the other 15-20 minutes it was back and forth between 20 and 24k. Both planes putting their best attributes to test by their virtual pilots. I caught the P51D in a burst from 400 out (convergence set to 300 w 2/20mm cannon's and 2/8mm MG's). Never underestimate the 190A-5 at 20k. ;)

I remember the first mission I lead and "designed", it was full of P47's loaded with 1k bombs and 5in rockets.... we went NOE then "popped" and decimated the town in nearly one pass. Thing is though those 47's don't climb worth a hoot and were sitting ducks for the Lgay7's and Spit16's that upped.... that was the one and only time I took 47's on an NOE mission.  :)
Oh... that was in Feb/Mar of 2008. ;)

The P38L's work better for that, at least they can climb. Still need low level fighter escort though. :)  I eventually went with all Mossi's w/ Spitfire/Tiffy escorts or 110's w/ 109G/190A escorts.

Combat Theater (now Axis v Allies), back in the early- and mid-2000s.  That was just a great time and place, full of great people.

In particular, I remember one night.  The map was one of the North Africa maps, with a 1941 or 1942 plane set enabled.  A new squad (one I didn't recognize) came into the arena and decided to fly P-40s.  Coming from the MA, they were not terribly familiar with P-40s.  I was motoring around in a C.202, just climbing out from the field, when the squad spotted me.  They promptly abandoned whatever their original purpose had been, so eager were they to clobber the lone Italian.  I was twisting and turning to avoid them during the ensuing few minutes, so I didn't have an overall view, but it must have been a hilarious sight, with P-40s hitting the ground like plump raindrops.  I got credit for seven (7) kills, all but two of which were clearly proxies (and, given the 202's WWI armament, maybe even those were proxies).

i have many, from vulching a plane taking off from 12k with rockets. to killing a tiger 1 with 2 cannon rounds with a spit. to searching for a tank till i was almost out of fuel and dropped bombs at a random place and killing the tank.

but two days ago and this is what i love about ah, you never stop being amazed.

- we were attacking a town with tanks and plane.  we took town down but we knew there was a tank somewhere. he killed the m3 as i came around a street, saw the tank using mg to kill rest of troops. i only have he rounds fired one took out his track, next one killed him. didn't know you could kill tanks with he.

-a guy killed a 262, I turned just in time to see the biggest explosion I have ever seen.  wish i had recorded that one.  he was only 2k from me.

I haven't been playing the game long (only two years) but I fought a P51D when I was in a BF109k4 for 20 to 25 minutes once, I think the pilot was Allison, and I landed on fumes. My hand actually ached from gripping the stick after landing that sortie.

Another highlight of mine were the weekly friday night FBTrev bombing missions, those were good times. I hope he starts those up again this fall. One sortie we all upped in B17s with no escorts, I think around 10 or 12 sets total. The enemy (bish or rook, cant remember) knew we were coming, and they decimated us. We tried fighting off duces, 110s, 190 butcher birds, and I think a few 163s. Out of the 10 to 12 pilots that took off (so 30 bombers total with formation enabled), I think we all died LOL, and did little damage to enemy strats.

I remember Trev making it back with me almost doing so as I dodged in between clouds with my shot up 17s (2 of 3 - guns destroyed or empty and control surfaces mostly shot away) and a dedicated P-47 chasing me deep into our own territory.
