Title: P-39Q 196 IAP
Post by: Devil 505 on September 28, 2020, 06:01:22 PM
This P-39N (the N goes on our Q) was flown by Alexander Bilyukin of 196 IAP in the summer of 1944. Bilyukin scored at least 22 confirmed victories while fighting the Luftwaffe in the Leningrad area and was awarded "Hero of the Soviet Union" status. His P-39 is inscribed with the name of Alexander Nevsky, the medieval Russian prince who achieved significant military victories over Germanic invaders in the 13th Century. The Soviet Union made frequent use of Nevsky for propaganda purposes after the outset of war.

I even made a facsimile of the Soviet summer pilot's uniform.

I'm fascinated by your panel line highlights.

Are they blurred and then clean cut on-edge or just a single-pixel line?

If possible, I use a one pixel width line. But that only works on a lines that fall perfectly vertical or horizontal. For angled lines I use the paths tool to make a line. for round bends and corners I use the circle or square select (with rounded corners) tools.

But that's how I create panel lines in general. To make a highlight I copy the panel lines layer onto a new layer and invert black to white then shift each piece so that it's one pixel aft and either lower or outboard of the original panel line.

I'm doing the same thing but yours are so much better...

On this skin I have the panel lines set to 8% opacity as a base. Hatches have a copy of the necessary lines on a layer above set to 7%. The highlight layer is set to 6%. Hatches make no difference to the highlight.

Another thing to remember about P-39's, the external surface is about 50% hatches. I added tons of light chipping to the edges of pretty much every hatch. That probably increases the visibility of the highlights.

Well, they're visible, but still subtle.   It's an extremely realistic effect.

I'll have to study all of you guys doing NMF and see how that is different than OD.

Thanks.

I'm really happy with how the chipping turned out on this one.

It's exceptional.  That was the first thing that struck me--the chipping.
