Thank you to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this skin. It should be useful for the 9th AF based December FSO, together with the P-38L I did from the same squadron.
At only 18 years old Lt. Stan Ordway was the youngest pilot to fly a Lightning in combat. He flew this P-38J with the 485th Fighter Squadron during late 1944. As part of the 9th Air Force this squadron's principal role was to support the US advance by attacking enemy ground forces and logistics. Lt. Ordway's aircraft was named "Peggy/My California Cutie" after his then girlfriend and future wife.

Oh man look at that checkerboard nose on a '38! Great to see.
Curious about the two-tone color to the wing root-fuselage fillet/flashing near the cockpit. AFAIK, this is a single piece of metal - wouldn't it be the same shade?
Here is the best shot I could find of the piece, from the White 33 P-38 restoration:

The gentleman pictured is Frank Royal, who served with this aircraft's squadron in the South Pacific and undoubtedly flew it in combat. He has passed since the photo was taken a few years ago.

The wing fillet fairing areas on both the wings and fuselage are the same colour on my skin although I did make both the fillets and the gun access hatches lighter on this skin to match the photos I have of this aircraft. I guess the lighting angle is just making the two areas of the fillet look different in this screenshot.

Yep, that's it exactly Greebo - I chacked and I see the same thing on the one I'm working on. Its the different lighting angle between the wing and fuselage surfaces. Sorry for the confusion!
