Title: Breaking bad
Post by: RotBaron on January 02, 2021, 06:47:51 PM
Not the show.

But breaking bad habits. How did you do it?

If you smoked, drank, ate garbage food, worried too much about everything...etc

I know so many ppl right now that have been affected by Covid in different ways. I’m seeing myself and many others struggling with making better choices.

Just one example having a bag of chips instead of saying to myself there’s grapes or bananas instead.

Mine is eating sweets. I havent broke it yet, but finding things to get my mind off of it makes the urge go away. But I wish I had a giant bag of peanut butter cups, but cant have that in the house since one of the kids are allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. Sweet fruit like watermelon and strawberries work, but are expensive not in season. Cheaper to get a family size bag of chocolates  :)

Or ice cream
or ice cream bars
or a cake

Dang im hungry now

Don't have it in the house if it's a problem.

Focus on something positive to replace the bad habit. Don't just leave a hole you want to fill.

make your own food, use lots of vegetables and meat just to season it. eat salads but make your own, use fruits in your salads, use very little dressing. I like to drizzle a little bit of olive oil, chili powder and lemon.

you want something sweet, use a food dehydrator for fruits, heck make your own beef jerky too.

make it annoying and stupid to smoke and drink.  I hate warm beer, so I put only 2 beers in a wine fridge, takes a couple of hours to get them cold enough. my cigarette are on top shelf of the cabinet, i have to get a step ladder from the office, to reach them and i only get 1. I'm down to smoking 3 or 4 cigarette instead of a pack a day.  it's a big deal for me to climb the 4 steps so I use that as a way to stop.

I do engage in the occasional greasy burrito or pizza. if i feel like eating fried chicken I only make 4 pieces, instead of the 10 to 15 before.

basically, change at a pace you feel comfortable.

Trying to learn to meditate again. I used to have it down really well and do good relaxed belly breathing.

It takes a lot of practice, I know, not letting your mind drift off to other things and just focus on breathing or the guided part of it.

Meditating is like listening for a faint sound. For a few seconds you are focused and your mind is still. Then typically you start thinking about meditating instead of meditating.

The actual practice is focusing your attention.  I find that focusing on stretching is good practice since many of us are tight and have limited range of motion.  Also it's typical for people stretching to do it wrong because they aren't relaxed and focused on releasing tightness. So you get two complementary benefits from the time spent. Get a good book on stretching and do the daily routine with active meditation.

I smoked for 33yrs (many of those 3 packs a day)... and although I don't
recommend it, it took 2 strokes and a heart attack in the same week and
a month in 2 hospitals, 3 weeks in patient rehab and another 2 in out patient
rehab to quit... I would never have quit but all the time  in those places
I never had the urge again

One of my vices is vaping.

I quit chewing Copenhagen 2+ years ago and it seemed healthier, is touted all over the place as “healthier” however I find vape at times I never would have chewed and also find it doesn’t provide the same duration satisfaction. It’s like 10 minutes after vaping I want it again.

Turning out to be with my body not what it once was and seems to be (possibly) even more addictive. Not just the nicotine, the routine and ritual too.

Habits are very powerful but they can be broken.

Your body responds every day to whatever you did or didn't do.

Over 90% of your body is replaced by new cells every two years.

You can make a major improvement in two years of good choices.

Just found out a friend that seemingly had so much going for him committed suicide. Married to a clinical psychologist and leaves behind 2 young kids too.

Unbelievable he couldn’t get help. He had money, friends, family etc to reach out to. It was very deliberate and put a lot of effort and thought into the method.

Very sad.

There are a lot of folks out there with mental issues. Unfortunately they do not get help like they used to and many families are not what they used to be. It is a terrible thing when someone takes their own life, it is worse when they take others with them.

Meditation should be taught in schools these days as a means to quiet the mind and help with the mental issues that sadly sometimes turn deadly

Mental health or lack of it is the root cause of many things these days - some of which are even considered normal by some

When the gov got out of the mental hospital biz the help many needed was gone

Homeless is a good example as many of them belong in such a hospital

Some people have mental issues fact :old:

Some people use it to act the fool, 60 years ago a coal miner would have give them a slap and that would be the end of that.

The Western nations have a culture of victimhood and the Establishment want it that way.

Hows the Covid affected my mental health? the government can keep the hell out of my business, putting garbage on their media mechanisms.

No mental issues in Africa or India they have flies over there will own your butt so they dont have the time for acting the fool.

If you have proper issues i feel for you :old:

25 years ago my boss wanted to fire me because I was taking antidepressants due to divorce. she said it meant I was unfit for the job. she only saw the bottle on my desk. my work production actually increased because it made me forget things at home.

I'm glad most people don't get so freaked out anymore.

Depression is a industry now adays.

Talk about your feelings and twitter your issues...No!

My problems are my business not a strangers or a Doctor promoting his pills.

My expectations are low so everyday without a problem is a bonus.

my problems are my business.

if I believe that, I would have never found out I was bipolar.  when I researched into it, and with help from doctors and medication. it gave me a pause. I'm off medication now.  I learn to recognize symptoms and not to act on them.  I have a wife that supports me and friends that know and help me.  not ashamed to tell them what I have.  I must not be such a bad guy, since they're willing to help.

Western society is based on victimhood.

The list of victims grows daily.

I am not sure in RC modelling weekly has a help line for identity issues or pro noun issues.

If anyone play golf you have mental issues.

You have to want it. The fear of death helps. Kids, job, your internal will, whatever, you have to want it.

You need to find a positive outlet for your time that reinforces your goal. A job, a project, a support group.

You can not go back to your old ways. Even once will reset you back.

Stay the course of positive action. Getting sleep so you are ready for tomorrow's goals, or maybe you enjoy your positive productivity and on you go. Just dont stay trapped.  Keep going or rest to keep going.

Remove the bad, build the good.  Easier said than done.

There are ways and people that can help too.  A good woman and friends, treatment centers.

When I first started as a young turn supervisor in 1970, men on the Furnace chewed or dipped to keep their mouths wet.  Working on blast furnaces is a different world.  Many Hazards from severe burns from molten slag and iron and constant heat, let alone carbon monoxide poisining.  when one wears insulated underwear to keep insulated from the heat even in 90 degree weather it tells you about the environment.  On my second day someone offered me a dip of Copenhagen.  I took it, the room spun around and I felt faint.  For 38 years I dipped Copenhagen.  When I retired 9 years ago I vowed to kick the habit. For a fact, I did it so long I didn't expectorate, I just swallowed the juice.  So I looked for something to help me quit the habit.  I found it.  It is called ZYN.  It's coffee in a pounch instead of tobacco.  Can be purchased with either 6 or 3 Mg's of nicotine.  I weaned myself from dipping anything entirely.  It was gradual but it worked.  I'm glad it did.

My bad habits WERE my addictions, smoking, thinking and solely believing that I was not living or living the right way if I was without any open can of beer. I was also at this time which was very unfortunate living on my un needed Harley Davidson springer softail with an L.L.Bean backpack full of Sam Adams!

What happened to me while I was on my motorcycle and could not even walk or see straight I was seen by a Southbury Ct cop who saw how drunk I was so he came flying up the road like a batt out of hell and slamed into me with his amazinhunk Expedition throwing me off the road on my bike and off the cliff that is still there off of the road "North Georges hill". I ended up with no helmet stopping abruptly with my skull smashing into a tree spilling my frontal lobe or brain into my eyes which took away my sight.
All of that toejam I just went through ended up taking my life which led me to the one man who would change my life and for what he would do to me and allow me to do I will NEVER STOP LOVING/PRAYING and even just talking to him about what became every single thing I would do in my day. That same day he would give me and allow me to live.

You see, I was taken from this earth and then told it wasn't my time yet and I was given the one opportunity that I did take to return home and "do it the right way"... Before I did return back to which would be my Hospital bed 4 almost 5 months later and came out of the coma that I fell into and when I came out and dame back I was in my loving Mothers Arms the only woman who will ever love me almost as much as Jesus Christ my one true savior. And while I was on that hospital bed, that urge which began to control each and every day or life. That urge to drink and Smoke ( I was up to 3 packs a day) the alcohol which in effect took my life was all gone only because my Jesus, My savior told me to stop living again with and on.

You see I came home a "new virgin" in which I will never have either a cigarette or a drop of alcohol for the rest of my life. And no one in creation will ever successfully say to me that there is nothing up there and there is nothing up there and np Jesus Christ"! They will ALWAYS AND FOREVER FAIL because I was with both!

When I did more return to my days and daily life was without my daily conversation to Rob or "Mars01" which is his handle here. Also that almost endless amount of time and constantly flying his Pitts on his dime and doing it with a TON of love because it was almost better than sex!!! But nah nothing ever would be!!! Except the meeting my Jesus Christ!

That's my story and my life that I was given and given back.
