Hi Guys, I have re subbed into this great game after a very long absence and I have forgotten some of the basics. For example, I am using a laptop and was wondering if I can use the built in microphone and speakers or if I need to use a headset. Also, how do I test my comms? Appreciate any help thanks.

When in game, hit "/" to open the radio. On the dropdown box at the top right click in the box and type in your name in the game. Hit enter to close the radio. Hit "t" to transmit and talk, release the key. if you hear your voice come back it works.
Best to test in windows sound first to be sure it works there. If it does, you should be able to get it working in the game.

Thank you.

If you need frame rate higher, try disabling shadows, reflections, pilot mesh, and the extra effects (lens flare, bloom, etc.). Also (and importantly) set environment map slider to "none".
If that doesn't give you enough frames per second, try video settings texture size to 1024.

Never having played on a laptop I don’t know the specifics but I do remember power saving settings being more important when using one.

Thanks for your input folk. I do not seem to be able to get my AH3 voice comms going. The instructions do not seem to work.
I don't have power saving problems ans my power is always plugged in rather than running on battery. I have had long term internet woes because the main PC is used for my wife working from home and I do not touch it. My laptop is at the back of the house and wifi was awful. Using paired power line adaptors I get a steadt 24/15 mbps and AH3 arenas are coming up at about 233 ping. I have had this running for most of today and have not been disconnected yet which is really great. Trying to use Battle of Stalingrad on dangerdogz servers is a different experience with constant kick outs and warnings. I think it is telling me to keep with AH3.
Control wise, my Logitech Extreme 3D is 10 years or so old and has a lot of spiking so I am getting one of those new Thrustmaster Airbus joysticks which are reported to be spike free. All in all I am happy with AH3 so far. :azn:

Well I play on an older laptop connected to an external monitor. It ain't pretty or anywhere near ideal but I manage.
I think that Fuzeman is referring to power saving options for a laptop. You will want to ensure high performance mode is selected not balanced or some other preset. You can go through the options to ensure the processor is set to use 100% graphics too and a couple of other things but just selecting it should be enough.
As a workaround to your mic problems sometimes doing a Skype self test can help. If a communication app is working then no reason mic in game should not.

Make sure your mic is selected in AH and check the voice settings in AH for mic volume and boost.
