I've been away from the game for about 4-5 years. I decided to fire it up again but I've noticed the last 3 maps have been small maps. Are big maps, such as fester, ozkansas etc, still a thing?

Large maps have been retired, they were way too big for the current player numbers

Thats a shame. Guess back to Elite Dangerous for me.

you are nuts...play for a few days and you'll see why big maps longer work

How did super large maps benefit you anymore than a regular sized map?
Seems stupid not to play for that reason? LOL

With lower numbers, there wasn't enough player density for the large maps. Get more people, and we can have large maps again.

I just prefer a large open world environment. Probably does not make sense to anyone but me. The numbers seem to be about the same as they were in 14-15 when I played and large maps worked just fine. My all time favorite map was Fester, followed by Ozkansas. I always hated when the small maps cycled (with the exception of Crater) and would even switch sides to help whoever was winning win faster.

I always thought it was ridiculous either way. Fight each other.... not the map.

Big maps now are for milkrunners that are too scared or dont know how to fight

I liked festers map as well, however, it wasn't even remade for AH3.
The problem with large maps is that late at night, with less than 30 people logged in, and less than 10 in the air, the map allows for such spread out action that it appears that there is very little action. I see this happening on bowl MA all of the time. If you are new to the game looking for some action, you will look at these maps late at night and see pretty much no action on the map. It makes it pointless to roll. If you do roll, you might fight one guy every 30 minutes or float thru the sky never finding anyone to fight. Smaller maps make it much easier to consolidate action and make bigger fights with less people. Also, large maps take much longer to win, and can stay up for 4-5 days. This makes it very boring for people who join the game every day playing the same map for a while. At least it does for me.
Just my opinion.

Good thing they retired them after they chased away all the players.
Ive considered coming back tho I'm now officially "Old" and can't play for long anymore. If there are no more large maps maybe I will. I still have my hardware and there still are Yaks.

If you really like the old large maps you can still play them offline. It would give you the same challenge as if they were online while rolling undefended bases.

Dont get me wrong, the large maps were very good maps. I liked the large maps when filled with players. On another note we once ran a operation on a desert map, I forget the name of the OP, but it was a very cool map of North Africa and I always wondered what happened to it.

Some of the "not large maps" appear too large to me. I hate having to fly over 10 minutes to get to a fight over someone's base, town, and/or fleet! Smaller is better, in this case, =)
