Older player that hasn't been around for a few years... but used to fly with Pand a lot... that boy could BnZ in his Pony
Anyway.. thinking about membership levels... I know that one of the issues that's often discussed is the constant butt whipping "new" players get that will sometimes drive them away from the game.. truth is... if flying was easy, everyone would do it...
So I have a question.. what about "assigning" an AI "wingman" to a new player for a period of time after they subscribe? We have something similar in the offline missions. Would it be that hard to do in the MA? It gives the new player a fighting chance early on and can be turned off after a period of time or achieving a certain skill level....
-
Idk, I think butt whipping is part of learning games. I mean, I get my butt kicked all over the place in Halo and Battlefield. Halo is really freaking hard. It's all about your ambition to learn how to be better. I don't believe an AI is going to provide any help. If anything it would allow me to get 2 kill easy kills instead of 1.
What would really be beneficial to new players is more time to try and practice the game since there is no populated free arena for them to fly in. These guys just want some quick fights to learn the planes and get into air combat. They don't want to fly aimlessly for 10 minutes to a base then get jumped by 4 players in Yak3s.
There is no team death match like in other games. There appears to be no objective like in other games. Like it battlefield, they have conquest that you capture certain spots on the map, this gives you more points to capture them, then the other team comes back and tries to recapture them. There are no zones on these maps encourage players to fight in a certain area.
I'd love for AvA to pick up, but we need people in there all of the time to show that there are #s in there and it should be added that it's a Team Death March style of play.
No one knows that AVA is on a small map, no one knows that it's set up team death match style. And players will not click on it to check it out if no other players are in there.
IMHO, the MA is just too big for new players who don't understand the game.
-
Definitely valid points. Part of why I had to leave was sheer time.. Most of the players in AH aren't 12 year olds with all kinds of time on their hands... I love the game, but because of family/life commitments, I'm relegated to an hour or so a couple days during the week and maybe a couple of hours one night per weekend. So finding a balance between beatdown/rewards is important to me to come back. If I wanted to get crapped on for a solid hour every day, I'd take up a hobby with my wife...
And regarding numbers... I don't know that "if" an AI was possible, it couldn't be made to be a better/worse wingman...You might indeed end up with 2 kills... but I bet everyone wouldn't...and... it'll add more game play... which is ultimately what people want/need.
Maybe some combination of the 2 ideas?

Just need to make the game free and then sell each plane for $100 a pop like the other ww2 flight sims are doing
Then require someone/ group to provide the server with their rules and limitations....
On 2nd thought it ain't so bad now after all :)
Just need smaller maps so flight times are cut in half and fights are sooner and more plentiful

They get rolled way too fast.
Yesterday Northco (a great map imo) was up somewhere around 6 hours, by the end of the night another map had already been rolled.

That's no bother tho. The current players who are on have a chance to win a map. That's encouraging for players and could give them something to play for. I dont think quick map rolling is a bad thing as it gives more players a variety of different places to fight. Also, if you log in on a big map and see your team with 60% of bases only, and no fight on your side, or getting ganged by both sides. That will just encourage players to log who don't like to switch.
So what happens is, we get stuck on this huge map that takes up the entire weekend with minimal fights during the off hours. It's creating an embalance that is hurting #s.
The other day I was on, there was 5 rooks, only 1 in flight. 27 bish and 14 knights on CraterMA. This is what happens on maps that are unsuitable for the current #s.

To me, there’s a direct correlation to the small (good) maps getting rolled quickly and then getting stuck with the big maps when it’s weekend or holiday (i.e. higher player #’s).
Northco and Montis got rolled yesterday in a span of ~12 hours and now we’re going to have big map all weekend...

Yup, we are in agreement there.

So just remove the old big maps out of the rotation and let the smaller maps cycle through faster
Doesn't sound too difficult to do and try for a month or two
Some of us have never cared about base capturing at all

There are only two problems with that.
One, "those that dont care about capturing bases" are a small part of the players, much smaller. Other wise AvA and "War Online:Pacific" would be much more popular.
Two, the base captures is what generates the fights the fighter guys are looking for.

I disagree with your first statement, but agree with you second.
Those games are completely different. AVA would possibly be more filled up if it had "team death match small map" in the name. So people actually knew what was going on in there. And there needs to be someone in there playing to build #s. The fighter base has considerably dropped to go other play other faster action games like WT. I think by not making the game more fighter friendly, they are in effect losing those #s.
I do think base taking is part of the game does provide the "fight". So i do think it's important. However, lusche did post stats that the majority of players want to play in fighters and that that #s was decreasing due to certain factors with gameplay.
-
Seems to get good in any particular plane I just need to die in it enough.
Just the way of it. VERY unique and special game we got here guys.
Wish there was easier ways to get new guys to hang in longer to make it fun for them.

Could you point me to where he said that? I am a pretty avid reader of the boards and dont remember him saying that.

Was thinking about hitting up growling sidewinder on YouTube to see if he has played ah before and ill show him the ropes
I've tried Il2 multi-player and it's just not as good as AH
Single player is fun tho :aok

Dam I got my butt kicked all the time here by Violater even in the close tree top turn fights w had in 109s and he always won due to a fubar move I would make so ya butt kicking is part of all games

Well you are always a fun fight and you are pretty damn good yourself, so I know you've gotten me a few times as well. :aok
It's fun to learn from the great sticks if you really want to understand ACM and maneuvers. It's very hard to be good at any game until you've got wacked by the best for a while and ask them to show you some things.

Ask him. I'm not gonna go thru AH history forum records. The stats clearly showed that most people flew in fighters and that # has clearly dropped over the years. So have the tank and bomber #s. But the fighter #s were the biggest drop off.

How is this not common sense? :headscratch:
Because YOUR common sense isnt as common as you believe. Just because "more players fly fighters" doesnt mean the same as "more players LIKE to fly fighters". All of your thoughts and ideas for this game stem completely around what YOU believe is, everyone wants to fight in fighters, and it just not true, not even close.
I like fighting in fighters, but I also like to do bomber milk runs to see if I can beat my highest damage total. I also like to jump in vehicles to try my luck against the super stars we have in the game. I also like to work with my squad, heck almost any group that is working toward a goal be it defense or offence. I think I represent a far large group of players than you do by a huge margin.
Do you know why you see "so many players flying fighters"? Because they get bombs to the target faster. Also its a lot easier to vulch in a fighter than it is in a buff, though doing it in a buff is a riot! lusche did NOT post stats that the majority of players want to play in fighters. Lusche has no way of knowing what players "Want". He could only post the numbers he could pull from the game, want has nothing to do with it. That was why I wanted you to post a link because I knew you never could. So again, your logic is faulty.
Personally I would like to see only small maps even if they do get rolled quickly...... by all those fighter guys  :devil I think new players would have more fun if the action was moving quickly. At least having there butts handed to them every flight wouldnt hurt so much as long as there is action around for the next flight. The large maps get boring for a long time players, what do you think a newb is going to think of it?
One other thing, we have a different type of player these days. Far too many players doing the pick and run in their ponies looking to run up kill streaks to look good for the ladies when they land  we all know who they are. Gone are the days when a player popped the same a guy a few times and then tuned him up on the radio to try and help them out to get better at the game. The all mighty "kill count" far out weighs the "help to retain players" thing. Until the next wave of gamers rolls in to again change how the game is played OR Hitech steps in and forces a change I fear we well continue along the path we are on now, a slow decline. :(

This feeds on itself too as I find myself flying faster planes at higher alts to counter these ponies.

True, but the next step in that evolution is to ignore them. Fly what you want at the alt you want. If they want to come all the way down where I am and pick me ,what ever. Im not going to let THEM dictate how Im going to fly. I know they arent going to fight (get an edge on them and they dive out and run for 3 sectors.) so I dont bother with them. Dying isnt a problem, I do it all the time, but finding a fun fight, thats a rarity.

I think you are over thinking it man. Fighters are the key to action and building #s in AH. That's not my opinion. That's based on 17 years of playing. I'm not saying that people don't like to play bombers or tanks. Infact I know many who like tanks much better. I have done plenty of bombing runs. Not saying those shouldn't be part of the game. My point is that you see the majority of players in fighters. When the action is stale and there is no fighter action is when you see the lowest #s, which is why I have a problem with a few of the maps.
I've already talked about this issue of super late war planes dominating the MA and its effect and Hitechs refusal to adjust ENY for certain planes and also increasing the cost of certain planes perks and perking super late war planes atleast 5 perks. It would severely cut down on the super E planes, which would in effect prevent everyone from having to fly super E planes just to compete. Obviously 2 weekers should get them for free. The yak3 being about the same eny as a spit9 is absolutely ridiculous.

I think you may be under thinking it.
Years ago furballs would pop up and some lasted hours, most didnt. Todays player most likely wouldnt be caught in a furball, maybe the reason you dont see them that much any more. Todays player is more about the base grab, or picking and running to get as many kills as they can. Changing how those players play isnt going to work because there IS no way to change it.
We need new players with a better frame of mind in how the game is played.

I'm not saying that I want to change how players play. A player can still go off on their own on a smaller map, climb to 25k and bomb random bases just the same. A player can go attack an undefended base on their own on a small map just the same. Notice how that's a small amount of players that play like that. I hopped on late last night at about 11pm est. Noticed that almost all of the fighters were in furbal Island. There were 62 players on, which is a lot for that time, and it seemed like there was a good air battle going on. This was Ndisles. A great map IMO. Because there was a fun area to fight in, the #s stayed in the 60s, when they generally would have been in the 40s on most other maps. To me, it's just kind of dumb to encourage lone players attacking random fields with low #s, rather than encourage a lot of players to furball on a smaller map that provides faster action for everyone. I think you can clearly see what people want just by looking at the #s and fight situations during the off hours.
Do I wish there was unwritten rules about ganging and vets flying EZ mode super planes? Absolutely. But there isn't, and you aren't gonna change people's natural instincts, you can only change the environment they play in to make them consider wanting to change their style.

I said "consider" changing their style in a different environment. It doesn't mean they have to, nore does it mean I'm forcing them to. Basically it will just mean more people in the arena fighting which means it might be harder to be a loner who attacks undefended bases. If you are a loner who wants to attack undefended bases, than you obviously don't want more people in the arena. So I'm not sure why Hitech would want that as low #s correlate to slow gameplay which means less people playing and subscribing.

condensing in someway (my opinion) would lead to more action... at present it is very noticeable when numbers are at the lower end and there is a substantial numbers difference.. the lager number sides have taken to popping one guy at a few bases along a front... they hide in the trees and take a player out of the main focus point...leaving ultimately an undefended base...This has always happened but like everything...with the lesser numbers it has become more noticeable..
Many times a base take turned into a furball... purely through numbers trying for and against the take... now we have too much of a sand box to cover...
We still need to allow bombers and jabo to do their thing and sure flatten a field at the back of the map kill ords and radars at bases to limit a sides function ... but trying to limit... and that is a bad constricting word I know.... the area of base takes to draw more players to one area will in my opinion bring back excitement. you are either on the side that has no uppers due to the power of numbers..or you are working out just how many times you are going to offer yourself to them most times these days... sure it has been like this all the time...however the number thing makes it less entertaining... there is a much smaller opportunity to even try...
I find many times there nothing better (other than the sheer size of them)than those maps where there are no spawn points and there is a cv offshore .... these produce all kinds of action...fighters defending attacking ...buffs trying to sink the ship...buffs trying to destroy the base etc etc etc.... but it is confined and causes a frenzy..and the only reason is because the guys with the boat have committed and the jig is over if that boat is lost and visa-versa... there is no chance of an easy resupply for the defenders so they have to fight to keep that beach side property... This actually goes the same for the no town bases... hard fought fights for them also...and those ones allow for GV fights too.... getting people frenzied will make us waste soo much time..stay longer and sleep less..

Stated in AH way back when AW went down. Late 90's early 2000's ?? Flew AH for years.... Stopped when AHIII came out as my system and Internet connection wasn't up to speed to be able to enjoy the same frame rates... too much lag etc.. Since day one though, I was always simply a fighter jock. Over time I've flown all the plane types. To the time I stopped flyin' I loved the Hurri II, Spit IX and 109 f4 I believe it was...anyway, the rather slow TNB types. As for Squads, I only ever joined up with The Damned or was a solo pilot. When there were low numbers or no furballs to engage in I'd go bomber hunting. Sometimes, I'd get involved in base takes but usually serve as trying to protect the base takers from incoming fighters or vulching while others focused on taking down the town/base...eventually it became more difficult to find and engage with folks just wanting to go 1v1 or 1v2, even 1v3 was ok with me. Most frustrating was dealing with folks jumping in BNZing us especially once the fight got down to treetop level and at near stall speeds. So all the "fun" of a long TNB engagement suddenly went out the window. I learned so much in those TNB fights and felt I could often hold my own against some of the best and felt fairly respected as a decent "Stick". I got to where I never used the radio or ever acknowledged anyone with more than a <S> for a good fight. I let everything else roll off like water on a duck. I've often thought about updating my system and equipment and coming back and enjoying all the new AHIII features and awesome detail levels. If I ever do, I'll still be searching for those ACM knife fights! So, if you ever see me back, hit me up and I'll always meet up with you for a solid TNB fight and hope we don't get BNZ'd by those just looking to increase the Kills for the cheap glory of landing multiple kills as if they had earned them with anything more than having jumped someone. And for sure SA is an extremely important skill and it's up to me to be fully aware of someone or ones entering the fray but, I believe in "honor" as it were, and BNZing on an obvious couple of pilots engaged in a TNB melee just doesn't seem like something to brag about. I'm not concerned about changing the gameplay or how someone else enjoys the game or particular maps, etc. I enjoy flying at the highest realism levels and "winning" through applying the best ACM's with an opponent or opponents. Making it back to a base and landing is icing on the cake but not critical to me. Again, if I make it back flying AHIII anytime soon, and you're one of those types who is looking for an air to air fight, I'm your huckleberry! <S> (Currently living in Arizona, USA)
