Work-in-progress shots. Playing around with spec, power and environment map values, and some changes to metal base. Trying for a cleaner, newer look to the aluminum. Click for full-size images.

Very nice NMF, great work.

Fantastic job.

Very realistic. Great work!

Beautiful. I would consider making your panel line shading a little more obvious in your transparency setting for that layer, but man is that pretty regardless.

For depth.

I agree. It would probably look even better with more apparent panel lines and fastener detail.

Thanks - I had really cranked up the specularity on this one, and I suppose the extra brightness requires the darkening of panel lines, etc - they're being overpowered. I might try backing the Spec down a little, but regardless I'll also darken the panel line layer as you suggest.
Anybody else interested in doing skins for the Flying Fortress? Seriously, it has the most gorgeous shape of any WWII heavy bomber, and there are many problem skins that are up for adoption. The only problem areas on the skin are stretching issues around the engine cowls. I'm also working up a green drab skin from the 452nd BG, and if I get that one looking good enough, I'll feel ready to adopt a few skins to fix their glassy appearance, both green and natural metal.

Excellent work!

I have no intention at this point of doing any bombers beyond the occasional He 111. So go nuts on the B-17's.

I forgot about the He.111. That has a pretty cool shape too.

I was toying with making a B-17 template before you did yours but I don't see the point doing one now. If I'm going to create another template it will be something no one else is making skins for at the moment. The available aircraft shapes all have issues though, either a lack of variety in the subject information or in the case of the Tempest a horribly buggy 3D shape. So most likely I'll do a GV of some sort next time.

Yes, I forgot the B-17G also has stretching issues along the fuselage spine, and severe stretching on the chin turret which precludes doing any skin with a mouth there. Unfortunate, as there is one called "Flak Eater" which would be a great skinning subject.
