Title: Updated skins.
Post by: FTJR on September 13, 2021, 11:07:43 PM
Since i am slowly (very slowly) updating my skins in I will just keep a single thread.

The first in the list is one of my Tu2's, Thanks to Devil for his suggestions, and Lyric as always for the info provided. As always the mistakes are mine alone.

The one thing that bothers  me is.... Is the green too bright?

That looks nice. Is that the final version or will you add even more weathering?

As for the paint colors, I personally would darken and dull the green a little and lighten the black a little as well. But you should wait for Greebo to chime in on those Soviet colors before making any changes, since he does them so well on his skins.

Nice work, bud.

Minor tweaks.

Its looking good FTJR, I'd like to see some oil stains behind the engines and it given a general dirtying up though. Also the camo on the air filter ducts does not seem to match the cowls.

I feel its close, but there are things that can be tweaked,  which is why i bought it to the board for the more discerning eyes. The weathering is there, its just a matter of adjusting the opacity, and adding the details that i've missed.
Thanks for the input on the colours. I shall see what Greebo has to say.

Thanks Greebo, can you comment on the colours please.

I think Devil is right.   Walk the colors in toward each other a little.   Make the darker lighter primarily.

Hi FTJR,

Looking at these screenshots on a MacBook Air, and the green does not seem too bright to me.    Sometimes, for a comparison, I'll take identically-posed screenshots with my aircraft and another one I trust the colors on, and then switch back and forth between them to see how close they are, and if any differences seem reasonable.

Good-looking update; I especially like the chipping along the wing root.  Looks very convincing in sunlit glare.  You might also consider lightening/fading the paint area surrounding the chips somewhat, to indicate paint dulled and worn by foot traffic.

To buttress Oboe's point you can play with desaturation some on the light green.   Small steps tptgj you find what you like.

Here's the RGB for the AMT-4 green I used for the coverups on this Soviet P-400: 68 73 50

It may look too dull when painted in larger areas, but you might like it.

My RGB values for the early war VVS scheme are as follows:-

AMT 4 green: 69/76/48
AMT 6 black: 40/40/40
AMT 7 light blue: 120/145/155

My skins usually have a desaturation layer on top of the paint layers as well as various patchy grime layers which mutes the colours a bit though. I think your skin could do with some of that to age the paint.

Apart from needing some dirt effects your top colours look OK to me FTJR. Maybe the underside blue is a bit bright but its hard to tell with so little of it showing.

With regards to VVS greens - weren't there multiple shades and colors?

I thought I read somewhere that paint was in such short supply in the Soviet Union that the VVS resorted to using a green paint for tractors on some of their aircraft - this is the brighter green you sometimes see on Russian aircraft...

Regarding Oboe's post about the  various colours, iirc the original was supposed to be the "tractor" scheme, but i have long since discarded my references.

So.
Have adopted Devils suggested colours and adjusted the strength,
tweaked the weathering.

This is just to display the underside blue, i will be increasing the weathering on the bomb doors.

The green and black look great now. The underside blue is much too bright. Also the red star looks too bright and pink to me.

Otherwise, it's looking very nice.

I think it's looking good, FTJR.

Again on a MacBook laptop right now; I don't see pink in the red star.  Could be my old eyes, or a monitor or display setting difference (HDR on/off, Game settings on/off, brightness setting, etc)?

Also as far as the brightness of the blue underside and red star - they are being hit with direct sun in this shot, so have to figure that in.  The light blue and star under the wing look about right don't they?

Regarding the border between the upper camo painted surface and the lower blue however - wouldn't this be a feathered edge, rather than the straight line?   I doubt they would've gone to the trouble to mask off the area to give such a perfect straight line between the blue and the camo paint.

One other thing I do, and I *think* I've see this elsewhere - you can add a surround of faint grime around the small access panels on the fuselage underside and engine cowls.  I do this on the outside of the panel only, and try to keep the effect subtle.

I also include the grime layers in the SPEC file and really darkening them a lot so the specularity of the grimed areas is much less that the surrounding cleaner areas.

I'd say the blue needs desaturating a lot and the red could be a bit darker, the top colours are good though.

On my phone looking at it I would agree with Devil.

Switched to my gaming PC and its a large difference from the Macbook.  I agree with Greebo's comments about the underside blue needing desaturation.  What a difference a monitor can make.

Dang Oboe,

I had to go back and look for photo's, as opposed to profiles, and I think you're right about the feathered edge, its also logical.

I will do the grime as you suggested.

Thanks.

Like the new iteration much better. I'd's still desaturate the blue a little more, just to take the edge off.

Also, I agree with Oboe, feathering the paint edges will also be an improvement.

The default skin doesn't seem to have feathered edges, but many color profiles of the aircraft do have a softer demarcation line between the blue and the camo.

Here's a period photo I found (as opposed to a photo of a present day restored aircraft) and it shows quite a bit of feathering:

Pretty sure that aircraft #3 is one of his others skins.

Yes it is, but i cant remember seeing that photo.

Anyway I've updated the blue (darkened), added feathering, and lightened the spec file, thanks to Oboe for his suggestions.

Its looking good now FTJR, my only quibble is with the blue colour. It still looks too saturated to me, its not so much a question of darkening it but of reducing the numerical difference between the red, green and blue components of the colour.

Since changing the blue saturation in the way discribed is new to me, I redid it from scratch.

Overall I like it.

Where is that bright highlight on the lower tail coming from? Is that a lighting defect?

Also, do you have shadows turned on? I can't see any.

Sorry I goofed, i have to turn all the shadows and reflections off so I can play the game.. I forgot to turn them back on. The bright highlight is the Sun reflection.

Great job, FTJR!   The feathered line between the camo and blue underside looks great.

I think I have the same problem with shadows - turned them off to play on CraterMA and think I forgot to turn back on...
