Title: P-40B AVG, 2nd PS "Panda Bears"
Post by: Devil 505 on September 18, 2021, 11:19:20 PM
Curtiss H-81a (Tomahawk Mk. 1 / P-40B) Possibly flown by Robert "Bob" Layher (reference photo is signed by him), flight leader in the 2nd Pursuit Squadron "Panda Bears", American Volunteer Group "Flying Tigers" during the first half of 1942. The "Panda Bears" primarily saw action in China while based at Kunming, but also saw stints in Burma during January and May.

#46 is only one of two Flying Tiger P-40's I can say with reasonable certainty had the blue outlined shark mouth. The vast majority of the artwork and models of planes with this feature turned out to have black outlined shark mouths in reference photos. Unfortunately, All that is shown in the photo of #46 is the nose, so markings are depicted as what was typical of known 2nd PS aircraft - although the inclusion of the "Panda Bear" emblem on the fuselage side is artistic license on my part, as it seems they rarely panted their emblem on their planes, unlike the 1st and 3rd squadrons.

Nice.   Beautiful job.   The metal looks a tad pink where the paint is worn on my end.   Maybe.   :headscratch:

I see what you mean. It's caused by the dirt layers above the metal layer and the bleeding of the brown tones in the edges of the worn paint in the final game file. In game it's not as noticeable - especially when looking at the area squarely. It's exacerbated by the low viewing angle.

Day-yam that is a superb skin!  Your work is fantastic.   And thanks for you attention to detail and accuracy, Devil.

Any chance you will ever do an Aleutian Tiger P-40E from the 11th FG?   This group was apparently lead by Chennault's son.    It has great nose art as well, and its WarHawks have been the subject of some fine paintings.

Thanks!

And yes, I do intend to make an Aleutian Tiger P-40E at some point.
