By all accounts green.

I believe this is a sister aircraft of the same squadron same underside black paint, never found anymore information on it.

Prior or after the black paint?

Man that is a cool looking theme.
I hope one of you guys update the J with the snakes on the booms in the future as well. That was one of my favorites after 80th skins.
-
Nice find! That WILL be a cool-looking skin.
Lazer I *think* there is a snake-boomed P-38 there now? Grebo did it IIRC, but used a dark British green for the snake's body. I'll have to look again.
I just flew the '38 for the first time in a while last night.
-
Miss Ann was almost certainly olive drab with jet black undersides.
I've already done an 80th FS P-38J with the snakes and also an 80th FS P-38L without them as they'd stopped using the snake art by this time. I will be doing a P-38G with the snake art later.
-
Thank you for the feedback.
My only question is, why is the 38 in the background so much darker if both are olive drab / green?
-
Probably just a case of the B/W film capturing differently faded shaded of OD differently.
A color example of just how varied OD can get in the same environment:

Okay, I'll go with that.
Thanks.

That's 80th FG from the CBI, 80th FS, not that I'm partial, was 5th AF in the PTO No snakes on the 8th FS Headhunter 38s :)

Are there any higher res versions of the photos I posted? I’m not sure the vertical stabilizer and rudder are entirely black like the profile shows...

Only two images I have ever found.
Since there is no right side image known is the profile wrong? :headscratch: :devil

Was looking a little closer at the Britmodeller site it has a book listed for this unit.
I have this book it has a brief description in it that explains the P-38 in the background I believe.

I doubt the description above was for "Miss Ann". They did lose a third P-38 this might have been the bare metal upper and black lower plane with the lightning flash on the cockpit nose.

Gray?
This muddles things some doesn't it?

IF you can search the Skins threads, this one was talked about previously. There were 2 51Bs and 2 38s, but they didn't last long as they proved to be unsuitable for the operations.

I read that one Master Bomber felt the P-38 was superior to the Mosquito in the role.
Thanks for the lead.

The black on the vertical stab looks to go only part way up and stops at the stab/rudder gap. Am I wrong?

No your not wrong the black its only on partially on the two sides we can see.
-
Although the lower stab could just be in shadow on the photo I think it would have been painted black. That area would have been Neutral Gray originally so it would almost certainly have been covered in black for a night scheme.
-
The rudder looks to be black on bottom curving up toward the horizontal stab. I agree the lower vertical stab is black. But now the upper vertical stab only looks black part way up.
Is that right, guys?
-
The darkness on the upper vertical stab might be exhaust staining.
-
True. But it is quite dark and the demarcation line at the rudder is stark. :headscratch:

I agree with Devil heavy exhaust stains.

I'm not 100% certain on it, though. There are no dark stains on the booms. I'd let Greebo weight in on it as he's far more familiar with how those stains build up than I am.
-
The tops of the stabs did get stained by exhaust gasses on P-38s but that looks too regular a division on the top edge and hinge line to be staining to me. Not sure why they'd paint just that area of the stab black though and not the top and rudder as well, perhaps some sort of group ID paint on the top of the stabs or the rudders?

Maybe there are white group markings or numbers under that paint. That makes sense that these got painted over.
Good thinking.
