Last night the topic of how radar is used in MNM came up. Typically what's used is the all seeing or "AWAC" type radar with a 200ft lower limit. This provides a nice radar free zone on the deck you can use to lose a bad guy or to set up an attack from a bandit's low six. The trade off is your giving most of the enemy aircraft a free altitude advantage.
Other radar settings we've used in AvA setups are:
AWAC type radar with a 200ft lower limit and a 5 to 8 second delay. This allows players to easily find the fight in a low icon environment and follow the general flow as the fight develops. However, the delay prevents you from actually using radar to keep SA on your opponents in real time during a fight.
Tower only radar. When in the tower you actually have to study the radar pattern long enough to plan a good entry into the fight. The short flight times in MNM would make this workable. Also, when in the tower players can give friendlies a quick update on what the bad guys are up too. Which promotes teamwork. Once in the fight you have to maintain a high level of SA.
It might be interesting to play around with these settings a bit just to provide a little more variety to the experience. Separate vox channels for tower only radar could also be used. Not to turn this into an overly competitive thing, but once in awhile we could divide into teams with different radar , vox and maybe other settings as well. After all the move to the SEA was done to have logs available; so this would be another way to use them.

After I asked about it I closed my clipboard to simulate non awac dar
It makes it about 100x harder - especially in MNM where icons are reduced :)
Those of us with vr would have a spotting advantage over the non vr players IMO

The spotting advantage VR provides is baked in regardless of the arena settings. For players that have spent a lot of time in the AvA, flying by the seat of your pants with a minimum of radar help made it more challenging and interesting. It didn't seem quite like a 100 times harder without the helpers, but maybe a 100 times easier with them. :D

Eagler,
Have you flown in the AvA during years past when there were no enemy icon ranges and friendly icons were very short? That scenario was a lot of fun and very real world like. As I remember, VR was a twinkle in someone’s eye back then. But, you are right about the advantage VR provides, especially flying down amongst the tree branches. :salute

i get what you guys want to do, and we can try it. from my perspective im trying to encourage players, some of these settings might scare people off. that would be my only concern. ive heard talk that monday night madness is an elitist event as it is. im trying to dispell that and keep it at a fun level

I recall when first trying the AvA years ago, there were quite a few players in most every visit. The enemy icons were off and friendlies were short, adding to the challenge, and the fun. Multiple players were enjoying it night after night. Someone complained, not the majority, and the enemy icons were turned on and the friendly extended. For sometime now, the AvA sits empty, void of players, except for MNM (recently moved to SEA) and TNTN. So, who really got scared off? Or, was it the fun that the majority were enjoying was eliminated by a whining minority?
“Elitist” event? Says who? How many say so vs how many are regulars who enjoy it on a routine basis? It could be said that catering to the whining/complaints of a very few compared to the majority who enjoyed the previous set up, was the downfall of the arena and it’s current empty, echo state.
It pays to let the screeching and whining minority move along and not fix something that really isn’t broken. :salute

For players new to the MNM the fog, towers, and close bases are difficult enough for them to get used to. I routinely suggest MNM to my squad. Several squad members have tried it and all have said it is fun, but hard. Changing radar and icon ranges might be a stretch too far.

Understood but, stretching with a difficult challenge is a great way to get better at it.

However you can simplify it in visual text, a lot never really gets it!
