I flew Aces High 2 for quite a few years, back a decade ago... I always had a decent stick and throttle... Always had rudder pedals... But I always struggled with the rudder... With multiple monitors and TrackIR, the rudder never felt right to me.
I've got a modest amount of real life flight time, and the rudder simply never felt right...
Today, I had my first Aces High VR experience.
OMG! I can fly a hammerhead and it actually feels like a hammerhead.
This is so amazing!
If you're still holding out on VR... Don't... It's amazing.

Only one question for you guys who have been flying with VR for awhile....
How do you keep from knocking over your glass of fine 12 year old scotch with these head sets on?
-
Lol it's a thing that's gonna happen at least once until you figure a safe place to put the beverage! It was only a beer for me but a good high test IPA!
Actually first time was a cup of coffee doing the oculus controller training. Reached out to catch something on VR and crushed my coffee.

Hint for your next purchase: Washable metal straws are a necessity.

VR....It was the best of times and it was the Worst of Times! :rofl It is a Right of passage, it seems! Many A tear was shed! I chalk it up to x3 "The Angles Share"! VR is awesome enough, for that sacrifice  This has been biggest "HOW TOO", other than "Typing on 200" for 5 years now! :rofl BW1stpar/ULcapkid...want a wing man...look me up...usually Bishop, but isnt set in stone. Always willing to help out!

I don't remember the name but there's a way to do a 'look through' your headset if you have to do something in the 'real' world. That said my beer always sits in the exact same place to my right safely away from any devices and I'm reflexively trained to reach it without looking
-
I drink gin and tonics with a straw. I tilt my head back and look down the side of my nose to spot and grab the glass. Only have lost one as a casualty.
To use the "look thru" with the Quest I think if you have it enabled you tap the side of the mask twice to turn it on and twice again to turn it off.

Ya, this is true. I think you have to turn it on in the settings somewhere.
Read somewhere on here that it can mess with your stick mappings though so I havent tried it yet. Still trying to get everything mapped on my sticks. Got most of the stuff for flying mapped, but as I have been zipping around the TA, I am discovering some of the old muscle memories from before are coming back and have had to re map some stuff like where my flaps are etc.

When you get everything mapped, be sure to create backups of the settings files. I think there is one for each controller, and I *think* they start with "VRxxx". Its a pain to have all your controller settings disappear - that's what happened to me using the 'pass-thru' view in the Quest. I happened to be in the controller mappings screen when I double-tapped to look at something in the room, and when I went back to the game, every setting was wiped out.
-
Yes! Do this! You don't want to find this out as you hit the runway starting an FSO frame! Ask me how I know.

I've noticed if my water bottle is in the incorrect place, its reflection can mess up the light sensors the vive pro uses

Got it... Water bottles screw with the headset... I will make a point to sticking to scotch. I'm sure that that will be safer. :D

My first stick, think it was a Sidewinder, totally crapped out in the middle of an FSO once. One of those FSOs where you fly to target for over an hour, never seeing a thing... Then suddenly there are bad guys dropping on the bombers and BLAMMO, stick is toast... Nooooooooooooo!
That's when I ponied up the cheddar $$$ for the Warthog

all the VR settings are "VR_xxxxxx.jsm"
Also be sure to setup all of your mapping and save often IN VR while in the plane. Some times tower setting go wonky. VR setting and non VR settings are save separately

I am looking to get the HP Reverb G2 next. Several squaddies have it and say its one of the best.

Oh the stick wasn't toast, just the mapping in AH. It'll just magically up and disappear. It's only done it to me a few times but now I have a backup saved to my desktop. Last time it did it I just quick did a copy/paste and I was back in business. Annoying tho.

I've watched a couple of Aces High VR videos and on thing I'm curious about. Is there a way to one click recenter? I really don't have an issue with the button to look behind but I'd like to be able to recenter so the reticle is in the right position
-
Yup. I'm out right now but something tells me it's like ctrl+F4 or F5. Look in key mapping for tracker center.

I havent recentered mine in a long time. Your IN the plane, and unless your flying sitting on a couch or something your going to be pretty much in the same spot all the time. Just like real fighting I assume you dont use a "recenter" button you just move back to center. It becomes very automatic.
-
Yes you setup a recenter button on the jstick so your sights are truly centered when you are firing..
Otherwise in my experience though it might look centered to my eyes it is not to the guns

Ant tips or advice on handling the rear views? I've got the Hat set to give me a backwards peak, but finding that I'm having a heck of a time tracking tracking a bogey. See him in my rearview, then as I pull into him and have to switch to the up view, as soon as I let off the hat, my view snaps to forward. Pretty disorienting. Probably just a practice practice practice thing, but if you have any tips, would love to hear them.
-
On my X52, I used to use a hat button on my hotas to slide my head position left and right while using a hat button on my stick to look back, up, left, and right.
I'm still trying to figure it out on my virpil, but it is practice, practice, practice.

I have two views mapped for VR. Rear view, and Forward-Up. I find that is really all I need. The only thing that's disorienting is the the left/right reverse when snapping to rear view. I may experiment with Left and Rigth views instead of Rear view - the way NeckSafer works. Starting from the 90 Left or Right view, I should be able to crank my head around the rest of the way, and that would solve the flip or right/left when using the RearView...
-
I do see a field of view slider in the graphics settings... But it is grayed out it appears. Is this something can be changed? And is it worth playing with, or does it just screw with everything else?
-

Oh yes... You should play with this. Just did this in the TA... Feels much more natural. In fact, I have removed the back view from my mapping completely. The Left/Right or the LeftBack/RightBack views feel much much better.
-
6 and straight up are two views I can't fly without
Go into straight up view to follow the pass before you go to your 6 view if you even half to..if you are turning properly with him, he will never leave your straight up view as you turn inside of him

To be honest people playing in VR in aces are spoiled with the ability to look behind and straight up without moving the head. Kind of a crutch.

How do you feel about TIR?

IMO It's a great improvement over il2 and dcs which doesn't provide that ability and is different even for trackir
At least every player has identical viewing options in ah

Im the odd duck in the bunch Pfactor, I dont use any look back at all other than my head and spatial awareness. A good snap to center is F10 and it also saves your head pos.
In main menu prior to going online click video settings and set your max textures to the max and set your field of view to 115 degrees then do that again online in Options, preferences, view options.
One last tip that is often overlooked is your IPD settings. set that in your VR headset settings.. if you dont know your IPD you can download an eye measure app on your phone to measure your ipd.. bad ipd can make you crosseyed.
Good luck and if ur a knight hit me up and ill share any wisdom i can with you. Im using Oculus Rift S for 3 years now and fly with touch controllers instead of my hotas now.

FoV setting has no impact on VR.

I finally tried this and I have to say, I agree completely. Using two hat switch buttons for Look Left/Look Right in combination with turning my head maybe 45 degrees gives me all the rearward view I need and it doesn't suffer from the left/right reversal that happens when using the 'Look Back' function. Much more natural. I've removed 'Look Back' from my controller mapping.
So now I I'm just using a 4-way hat switch - FWD-Look Front Up, RIGHT-Look Right, BACK-Look Up, and LEFT-Look Left.
-
I use all the views when in vr on the hat switch
Up view is a hold button on the throttle
