xc0000005 is a memory access violation.

Here's some tips on troubleshooting that error:

https://www.stellarinfo.com/blog/how-to-fix-error-code-0xc0000005-in-windows/ (https://www.stellarinfo.com/blog/how-to-fix-error-code-0xc0000005-in-windows/)

- Have you tried right-clicking on the aces high .exe and running it as an administrator?

- You could try re-installing AH also.  I recall some people with fast SSDs were getting corrupt installs, but this was a couple years ago.

Keep us posted...

Thanks for replying  :)

Yes, I've pretty much done all the things suggested in the link, and re-downloaded AH3  a couple of times but no luck with any of it. Interestingly, I run video editing and music production software on the same PC, all with no issues - it's just AH that wont run.

I have checked the hardware with various utilities including Advanced System Care, CC Cleaner etc, and all drivers are up to date. Dell's own system checker reports all OK.

I'm now wondering if there is an issue with the latest version of AH3, or the image that downloads the full programme. I guess I will have to wait for Hitech to release another version and then download the full version again to see if that works

Here's a link to another guy with the same problem.  I don't think he ever got it solved, but it may have some additional ideas in there that you could try.

https://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,401051.0.html (https://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,401051.0.html)

Have you tried running the DX9 version instead of the DX11?

EDIT:  Oops, I see you did already try DX9 version.

We havent had an update in some time, so waiting for the next may be awhile. Your best bet would be to call Hitech at (817) 431 - 8840. Hes pretty good at answering, and may be able to walk you through the issue.

Good Luck.

One more thing I don't think has been brought up neither here or in your other post: You have the Nvidia sound drivers installed, yet you seem to use a USB headset plus you have the onboard Realtek audio active. Disable the Nvidia audio in the Device Manager as your monitor doesn't seem to have speakers anyway. After disabling, uninstall the Nvidia High Definition Audio drivers. The HDMI audio has been known to cause trouble in AH for quite some time.

If you don't have any speakers connected to the computer you may as well disable the onboard sound in the BIOS settings.

When you say that you're getting to the Splash screen, are you seeing Clipboard with the Online Arenas button and other options? I want to make sure I understand where you hit the wall.

I saw where you replied to oboe that you were running as administrator. That had been my first guess as well but you indicated you reinstalled several times so...

Could Dell's bloatware antivirus be the culprit?

iirc, The video tutorial starts up with every new install that doesn't have the settings folder switch set to disable it, so it could be another source of the trouble?

What country are you in, and are you running a VPN?

Seems to be some people had trouble in the Far East with some aspect of running AH, that had to do with being in a blocked country, or something like that...

Hi Guys.

Thanks for all the suggestions and ideas. I have now disabled /removed the Nvidia Audio software and drivers, but no change.

I am based in Italy but sometimes use ExpressVPN to redirect my location to the UK. I  have tried both options but no difference.

The loading only gets to the initial splash screen, so no menu options etc. I have also tried both DX9 and DX11 options with and without joysticks plugged in, also with and without headphones. I orginally thought it might be a WIN 11 issue but I understand there are others using WIN 11 with no problem.

I have no Dell Security or Anivirus software running, only Windows Defender and iObit Malware Fighter and have tried with both products disabled, but again no difference.

I have uninstalled the existing AH installion and removed all remaining registry and common files, then redownloaded the current file from Hitechcreations, but it still wont run.

I think there must be something else that is stopping the loading process but I cant think what it can be apart from the file itself. Interestingly, of all the 'Applications' in the Aces High lll folder, only ahclds, ahskview and ahupload will actually open ...... none of the others do.

Not sure if you had tried this or not, but maybe in the Nvidia control panel there is an option to force the exe to run using the 3070 rather than the onboard video (if it has it). I would think the game would run on onboard as well, but wondering if there might be a conflict.

Alternatively you may be able to disable onboard video in the BIOS on boot, not sure if Dell allows that.

Several people with laptops that have dedicated GPUs have encountered this problem - I haven't heard of it on a desktop but its worth a try, because the behavior is so similar.

So you're seeing a large white window, which I always see first with a second small popup dialog asking if I want to run in VR. I'm wondering if you resize your 1st large window and move it out of the way if you might not see a popup behind it waiting for your response. I run into this problem occasionally using ahedit.exe with the front window being a bear to move out of the way so I can get to the hidden dialog.

I did wonder if there might be a conflict between on board graphics and the G Force card but no, the only graphics device shown in Device Manager is the card. Apparently insertion of the graphics card automatically disables the onboard graphics.

I have also been through the Nvidia control panel and checked everything there including adding AHlll to the 'specials' list for preferred treatment, essentially setting all options to 'let the application decide'.

I've also just done another hardware/system check with no issues.

Strange isn't it.

If you right-click the .exe in Windows 10, there is an option called "Troubleshoot Compatibility" - dunno if Win 11 has that, but if it does, might be worth a try.

Also if right-clicking the shortcut, select Properties and then select the Compatibilty tab.  You can run the Compatibility Troubleshooter from there, or below that, there is a box to force compatibility to earlier versions of Windows - try Win 8 or Win 7 and see if it loads...

Yep tried that - no success I'm afraid.

Just one question - I'm assuming DX12 is backwards to compatible to DX11 as WIN11 is DX12 and AHlll is DX 11 or 9? Or am I on a hiding to nothing here?

And one final question - Attributes AL   Does that mean anything?

Title: Re: WIN 11 - AH won't open past splash screen ?
Post by: oboe on March 21, 2022, 10:57:28 AM
It could be important.  Is this from your shortcut properties?  Here's what my shortcut properties look like, you can see Attributes is set to "A" not "AL"

DX12 should be backwards compatible with DX11.

Hi Fox -

I played around with the attributes settings, and never found an "AL" - could it be "AI" - that just indicated something about indexing.  I tried running AH with this setting and it ran with no problem...

Yes it's very strange.  This morning I completely uninstalled AHlll and then checked the registry to remove all obvious traces of the program. Then I ran both Advanced System Care and CC Cleaner to clean out any odities. I then reinstalled AHlll and guess what, exactly the same again - splash screen and then nothing.

I checked the task manager to see if there was any element of it running in background, but no sign. I then checked that other hi-resource programmes ran OK, Cubase 12, Photoshop, Lightroom & Bridge, all running at the same time with no issues.

I messaged Hitech yesterday via WhatsApp and I know he has read it, but no response so far. I think I will give it a week to see if there is any chnge and if not, then I guess I will have to call it a day. Its a shame, it's been fun.

When you initially install the game and launch it, does it start downloading the ~2gb-ish stdshape.res file? Or does nothing from the start?

Just trying to figure out how far you get.

Out of curiosity, did you disable and uninstall the Nvidia HDMI sound?

When I launch the program, the splash screen opens and stays on screen for about a second, then disappears. From that point there is n further action - nothing AH related showing in Task Manager.

Yes, as you suggested, I disabled them first with no difference seen, then uninstalled the drivers and again no difference  :frown:

Hmm, that is certainly interesting.

I had to do this the other day, so basically you download the 300mb AH file from the website. It installs, asks you if you want to launch. You launch, then it immediately starts downloading the stdshape.res file. It takes a little while but downloads and launches the game from there I believe.  It sounds as if it isn't connecting to the download server to continue the download/install of stdshape.res, so it just crashes...

You mentioned you're in Italy, you're not on VPN from there right? Only VPN from Italy to UK on occasion? I know HT in the past has had parameters against VPNs but it shouldn't matter as long as you're not on it...

Is a firewall preventing that download?

Is your Anti virus off and your firewall open when you are trying this?

Speaking of Anti-Virus, which one do you have? Some of them seem to think AH may be a virus and silently quarantine it. It's an on-off thing based on heuristics so it's hard to tell which Anti-XXXX should be avoided. But just in case, check the quarantine of your Anti-Virus and even if AH hasn't been quarantined, put it into the "exclusions" list. Or rather, exclude the entire HiTech Creations folder from any virus checks. Like this: "C:\HiTech Creations\*.*" without the quotes.

Further, check for multiple Anti-Virus installations. Since yours is a brand name computer, there most likely has been some preinstalled A-V program. They sometimes leave partially active settings behind. This one is a nice tool as it tries to find all A-V programs in your computer: https://antivirus-removal-tool.com/ (https://antivirus-removal-tool.com/). Not only does it find them, it also includes the special removal tool for every A-V. Some A-V programs may warn you about it, but it simply goes through the folders and the Registry for known locations of A-V program related files. The special tools are those provided by the A-V companies so they're even safer to use.

Hi Guys.

Thanks for all these suggestions. I have just re-downloaded the AHlll file from Hitechs server so I will clean out all current traces of the program, check the AV programmes for any quarantined files, run the AV removal tool, check the TPMs, and then will shut off all Anti-virus programes before launching the AHlll file.

That lot may take some while and you might not hear back from me until tomorrow, but I will keep you updated on progress...

Thanks once again

If you have a firewall like ZoneAlarm you might want to disable it also while you try to install the game

Well guys. I spent another half a day here trying to get the programe to run. Again uninstalled the current version of AHlll, deleted the current Hitech Creations Folder and ran Advanced System Care and CC Cleaner to remove all residual files and registry entries.

I then ran the Antivirus removal tool which showed remnants of McAfee Anti Virus, so had it remove all traces. I then re-ran ASC and CC Cleaner to check nothing was left behind. Also went into the Registry to check there ......

After that, just to be sure there were no system file corruptions I ran sfc /scannow and had no errors.

I then disabled me Virus checkers (Windows Defender and IObit Malware Fighter) and then downloaded a fresh version of the AHlll installation file.

I let it complete loading and said yes when asked if I wanted the program to run..........

Guess what, Splash screen then nothing !  Just as before.

So tried again, same result.

Checked Event viewer and got these messages:-

Just before I deleted to last install of AHlll I checked to see if there was a stdshape.res file anywhere, but no. So clearly there is some issue preventing the download of the rest of the install. Dows anyone know if there is another way of getting the other files?

Cheers, and thanks for your patience.

Honestly, I think it's time for a call to Hitech.   You've covered a lot of ground debugging so it should help him zero in on the problem.

Which browser are you using? If I remember right there was a problem getting old he full download over sea with one of them. Try grabbing the download with a different browser.

Hi Guys

Sorry I have not replied sooner, I've been up to my ears in stuff here with visitors etc. I'm now in the process of re-downloading AHlll using MS Edge instead of Chrome to see if that makes any difference. If that fails, I give Hitech a call during the week - I tend to be a bit reluctant to use the phone as I am stone deaf and it can be a bit of a challenge, but we will see  :aok

I'll keep you posted.

Hi Guys.

Well after a week of doiung other things and clearing my head of AHlll problems, I tried calling Hitech but got no reply (probably a good job really as I wouldn't have been able to hear him  properly unless he spoke very slowly), and sent him a message to se if that would work.....

While doing that I notice another thread talking about the slowness and other issues with hitechs servers and how this situation had been resolved by downloading the game via Stream. So I thought I would have a go, and guess what, no issues at all. The game loaded perfectly, the secondary download initiated perfectly and although very slow, all loaded correctly.

I logged into the game and flew a couple of quick sorties this afternoon but obviously need to map my controllers again to fly properly.

Anyway, the nuts of bolts of this are that clearly there was (as I suspected) nothing wrong with my PC, and yes, it is an issue with Hitech's servers.

If anyone has a means of contacting Hitech, he might like to know there is an issue with them. I guess since Skuzzy went there has not been anyone looking at this on a regular basis and I guess Hitech is busy 'coading' his next venture  :aok

Anyway, thanks for everyone's help and see you in the virtual skies .....

Glad it worked through Steam. It sounds more like an ISP issue considering it went fine when routed through Steam.

Wondering how many others have such issues but then just download IL2 or DCS instead..

It's possible. I would be curious to see if there is an option to download the whole of the game up front, but it seems the current method allows HT to update the game as needed while not having to update the link on the website every time. In the past the goal was to keep the initial file download small. Regardless, a ~3gb download is nothing compared to most if not all games these days. MSFS2020 I think was 127gb last I downloaded.

This is seemingly just an ISP issue though and nothing wrong with HTC's servers seeing as it is not a common problem and however Steam routed it connected to download the second half perfectly time.
