Title: I enjoyed Top Gun Maverick in an actual movie theater
Post by: Citabria on June 05, 2022, 03:23:28 AM
I stopped going to movies after Star Wars The Force Awakens.
I decided to give Top Gun 2 a try on the big screen. I want to watch it again this time on an IMAX screen. It reminded me of everything I enjoyed in real and virtual aviation while telling a great story.
What is the verdict here on it?

I have not been in a theater in 15 or 20 years.

I treated it like an adult film, jets, flying, noise, and camera work. Forget the plot and don't look for issues. With that mindset, I freaking loved it. The flying scenes are the best I've ever seen.

debating on driving the 40 miles to see it in a theater or just creatively procuring it and watching on my Quest.

The message Tom Cruise delivers at the beginning of the movie will only be seen in theatres. Awesome way to open a well awaited movie.

I really liked it for what it is, grade A aviation porn and a tribute to the first Top Gun. My biggest criticism is that I wish they had gone a different direction with the story. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen imo.

The spouse took me to see it in IMAX last night. She liked it. A lot. Imagine how I felt.
It's not great art, but it is great entertainment. One of those rare films where the audience participation makes it better, and you remember what you missed for two years.
First time I ever saw anything in IMAX. There will be more.

A few of my local friends and I have plans to go see it at the IMAX theater, I am the one that suggested it, because of seeing Saving Private Ryan...which was the last time I was in a movie theater

That includes drive-in movie theaters where my wife and I saw it.

I thought it was a pretty good movie overall. It's family friendly and entertaining. Thought the F18 flying was really cool. The story is alright, certainly some cheesiness, but that is to be expected. Thought it was a great movie for the theaters.

My wife mentioned that she would like to go see it. Go figure. She usually goes to shows with our youngest daughter who is 31. But our daughter can't stand Tom Cruise.
I may end up seeing this in a theater.

I'm with the "see it on the big screen" crowd. It's fighter jets! Ya gotta be able to feel the jet noise to really get into it, plus there's just lots of details in seeing it on the big screen. Plus there are a few parts where the whole audience gets laughing, it's great.
Personally I could care less about what actors are in the movie, all I care about is if the movie's good or not. I could care less what Tom Cruise's life is like, that's irrelevant to me. All I care is that he starred in both Top Guns and did a great job. Same goes for all actors.

Actually the movie is competency porn, air combat porn, nostalgia porn. The eroticism factor of the movie is nonexistent in the three times I have watched it.
It reminds me of Star Trek Next Generation Season 6 Ep10,11 “Chain of Command”.
The personality types are very carefully crafted to illustrate complete skill and coming into conflict with each other over style and method while still working towards a goal.
The flying footage is pure aviation grade heroin.
I missed seeing this movie on the last ever IMAX showing today 6/9 12:20 by 5 hours due to mechanical trouble on my last trip.
I made the mistake of watching the film on ScreenX thinking it was like IMAX and was horrified by the kaleidoscope of distraction of having all aviation scenes and only aviation scenes plastered on the walls on either side of a standard screen that was zoomed in too far completely ruining all the flight footage.
Watched it in standard directly after that gimmicky ScreenX dumpster fire and was back to being completely enthralled by the crisp beautiful easy to follow flying scenes in standard correct as intended format.
Tom Cruise learned from Edge of Tomorrow that people love seeing Tom cruise failing, messing up and getting killed and or exploded repeatedly and this movie may or may not disappoint on that aspect.
The last movies before this one that I had to watch repeatedly in theaters were “Lord of the Rings: Return of the King” and “Saving Private Ryan”.
I just wish I could have seen “Top Gun Maverick” in IMAX because I always wanted to only be a fighter pilot and that the movie is a flag waving “America is Awesome” nostalgia fest is great too.

There actually wasn't, happily enough! Most "woke" thing they did was throw in a Hispanic pilot or two, a female pilot, and a black pilot. And I could care less, the actors were all good.

Red Horse, or Sam Adams?
"Usually the only beer I can find in paradise is Red Horse (San Miguel if I must), but I just found Sam Adams in Puerta Galera, so I'm having second thoughts about the mountain home.
I don't know what you call beer, but if I can't find it in paradise (New Zealand or the PI) then what good is it?

If the timeline of the two movies was to be believed, Goose's son, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw would be in his late 30's/early 40's and Maverick would be at least 60+ years old. Probably closer to 70.
The original TG was hot shot fighter pilots flying and living by the seat of their pants, who honed their skills by competition and saw some 1980s cold war action (ala Gulf of Sidra type incidents). The action was original and believable.
The new top gun was amazing to look at. That's about it.
I had some serious issues with the movie, but I tried to enjoy it for the cartoon airplanes and action and overall I did.

Yeah well if the story of the original movie is to be believed we'd probably be in WW3 right now. :rofl

I saw the movie and I think it was good but not great! My wife did elbow me a couple of times for laughing out loud when no one else was laughing. :airplane: :airplane: :airplane:
