Title: Six hours
Post by: nrshida on June 05, 2022, 01:14:50 PM
I spent six-hours this weekend repairing a Sony Minidisc recording deck I got from Germany for a song. Successfully, happily   Couldn't afford a working one right now.

Also got a few cassette tape Walkman waiting for spares while I investigate inneficient experiential richness.

Anyone out there also listening to music on deprecated formats?

Does vinyl count? I have hours upon hours of music on Betamax and an antique Sony to play it on and a classic  NAD disc player for the many boxes of cd’s I have. Also there an old Walkman disc player around somewhere, likely with Atari and nes systems.

But my pride and joy is the working pong game machine I have….oh the hours of fun that was.

No vinyl is still issued and the good, thick stuff too. Somewhat of a revival started in Germany I heard.

That's very clever, had a friend that used to record radio on VHS.

Can you play "Tomorrow Never Knows" on it? Always a great benchmark  :rofl

Actually it’s more like what Arlo said, back and forth until someone misses the point! But I have never tried to play a song on pong….

The Betamax had superior sound th vhs as I used both, still have a vhs machine that’s a hybrid, tape and CD player.

The vinyl is old, plenty of heavy weight English import LPs and many have only been played once to record then put away,I also have several double copies where one LP has never been played.

Not sure exactly how many but between 1000 and 1500 would be a good guess, every payday I would buy one or 2 but these days they are asking close to 50 bucks a copy so I scour second hand stores to get classics on the cheap.

Wow that's a serious and indeed weighty collection. There was a video about the dangers of vinyl sleeves I watched recently. Something to do with gasses passing through and affecting the disk. Probably you know all about it. I'm a minimalist I've only got about a dozen atm  :rofl  Sent about three dozen to the charity shop. Lady Gaga's Greatest hit single was a bit dissappointing  :old:

Fetch it out! A company still makes the gumstick batteries. Net MD a step too far I think.

I watched a restored Sony WMDDII go for £387.00 on eBay yesterday

Randomly had Cypress Hill on an MD. Now I'm calling Mrs Shida Essay.

When I bought my truck last year, I got home with and couldn't find the CD player.  Call the salesman.  There is no CD player, everybody listens to serius or a streaming service.

So I ripped all my CDs and copied them to a USB drive and boom... Takes about a month of driving to go through my playlist.  Oh, yeah, playing songs on old stuff.  It's a Ford.  Fords are old.

Yes... either usb or Bluetooth off your phone. Works great.

I am still in the market for a new truck. Seems like forever. 3500HDs are extremely sparse.

Yes the first thing I do is remove the outer wrapping and the sleeve, the inner sleeve can scratch the LP and the putter wrapping can cause warping.

I have many English import punk LP’s,they use the heavy weight vinyl and are almost twice the weight of of a standard North American offering, oil crisis caused them to use less vinyl or so I’ve been told but it makes sense as the change happened around 1974.

Any Cassette deck experts out there? What's the deal with Dolby S and DBX? Can you replay those on non Dolby S and DBX players?

I have many English import punk LP’s,

Fantastic. I grew up in Liverpool in the punk era. It really meant something back then. Now it's just a fashion statement.

I happen to have 2 strangler albums…..1 by the banshees and several by joy division but those would be considered late punk, well maybe not the banshees.  I’d have to go check the collection to see exactly what I have, getting old causes you to not remember…..

It’s rare that I put on vinyl these days,my hearing isn’t what it used to be and it’s just too easy to stream almost anything so that’s what I usually do,in fact I’m streaming atm.

I bought a thorens to about 2 years ago but I got a hum when I plugged it into the old Macintosh so I Took it to a shop to get it fixed and the guy made me an offer I couldn’t turn down! Since I still had another amp and TT just sitting there I took the offer and ran to the bank. So now I use a crappy technics Ty and an integra amp to power my castle speakers. I did have a set of EV’s back when but then I had a kid and was worried they’d blowout his ears. The EV’S had a warning label, warning do not play at max rated volume as this will cause permanate  hearing loss…product liabilities and that stuff….

Whoa a Macintosh <we are not worthy>  :rock I've been building my own valve / tube amp now for about two years and probably for the next twenty at his rate. I didn't know anything about electrics when I started. My B+ is 300-volts. I've got Tango chokes already but the output transformers are a big step. I have my eyes on a pair but they're a cool grand. In the meantime I've got a Rotel RA-610 and some big Philips speakers. Not very expensive but it does sound very nice. I got a Pierre Clostermann LP recently and listened to it the whole time like this:

Also a LEAK Stereo 30 I'm just making some speaker plugs for because they are bespoke and unobtanium. The LEAK uses germanium transistors which are supposed to sound warm. I'll let you know

Something to be said for not-so-powerful systems especially as you get older.

I envy your ability to build your own amp!  Ya the old Mac was bought when I had more money than brains but it actually turned out to be a reasonable investment. I got twice what I paid for it and the thorens was a second hand find that the store owner had no idea of the value,I made triple my investment in just a few weeks.

The integra amp is quite powerfull, not rated as high as the Mac was but it has many more options.I can setup a surround for movies and then 2 separate stereo listening rooms with it but only have it setup to play music.

Been looking at Bluetooth tube amps, not sure if they make a difference but it would be interesting to see if there’s an actual difference that you can hear, not likely with my hearing these days though. I did find a set of Bluetooth speakers that can produce 120Db but want to hear them before I throw that kind of coin at them.

Off to cut the grass… it won’t cut itself.

Pierre Cochereau not Clostermann  :rofl What a noob. Got aviation on the mind.

Electricity is really weird. The behaviour of it in a choke is astoundingly odd and beautiful and natural at the same time. Was challenging and interesting to study that. Richard Feynman helped. Class D amplification is remarkably good these days. Mrs Shida's tiny phone gives an incredible output for its size. It's just that responsiveness of a valve amp in class A. They are so good at voltages.

Pop this on your system as more of a hear-your-system thing than anything else:-

If I've understood correctly, the choir represents man (and woman and everything else) praying to their god. The organ is their god responding. Phenomenal.
