I guess I'm finishing my third tour since coming back from a long time ago.
I try to fly prime time for the bodies. I think it was around 90 this evening.
I log on and try and find a fight. What I find is no fights. So find a base capped to get a little action. climb to 7k and in comes the group at 12k. survive for a while but outnumbered witth altitude to boot I die. Take off again, get to 12k and in they come at 14k with the same result.
Scour the map for something resembling a fight and I find vehicle bases are being attacked by everyone. Six or seven GVers is the only thing to be found at multiple vehicle bases. Off to a base with nothing showing on radar.. Arrive at 10k and low and behold there's a pair at 12... In a 51 so I split ess and escape. Get my altitude plus some and go back in. No one is there...
Have the fuel so off to the next base that shows a con. YES !!! Arrive and no one is there. Orbit the base for 10 minutes and nothing..
Well I'm not flying home so I start taking out ack. Something to do..
Of course then in comes a pair of 51's to tag team me.
The third day of this stuff. It's frustrating to have empty skys when everyone is in the dirt
Thank god for MNM. There is always a fight there.
Have noticed those that DO fly, the small group, are very good.
Going to try the bishops, they always have the numbers so I haven't joined up.
It is worse now than it was the first time I left in 08. The war that never ends has won.
Thanks, I'm done venting. The dog will heal. And I didn't like cat anyway.

You give many of the reasons why I’m in a tank most of the time.
Groups at those altitudes are looking to gang up.
If you’re always playing at the same time of day, I’d try changing that up if you can.
-
Hey Poop, if you want you and I can wing up and give those astronauts what for. I feel like we typical fly the around the same times and on the nits
-
It's a shame most good a2a is not realized in ma with its gangs of high alt late war runners..
Too bad EW, MW and LW can't be cycled through MA for variety as we are down to one arena with the numbers these days

Not classic A2A, but there was a great furball last night at A52. Rooks had the town WF and were trying to sneak with a CV group, but someone noticed and shouted for defense. Soon, the Rooks found the feet-dry spawn and the game was on, four or five LVTs spawning and running troops with four or five fighters launching off the carrier to attack the defenders who were in fighters, bombers, and tanks. Went on for quite a while and was non stop action. Eventually someone killed the carrier and the fight was over, but it was a hoot while it lasted. :D
-
Sounds like you found a fight in your 51 and ran away.
If you always want to have the advantage, its going to take a while to get set up.
but yeah, it's hard to find fights sometimes
-
Not what It used to be. Maybe when summer ends there will be more fighters playing, not piles of scavengers.
It really stands out when numbers are as low as they are. I almost never log in anymore, and when I do it's in dweeb planes to be able to compete with the gaggle of dweebs.

Yeaa, the summer really seemed to dry the arenas out for compared to when I came back in March.

Here's how that fight would have gone, 1st con dives in and extends 3-4k as the second one dives in then extends 3-4k. For the next 5 minutes the two higher cons never actually engage in anything more than poor bnz passes and only turning back in when he shows his 6. This is only broken up by the "fight" reaching the deck where they can no longer extend and run away or the more likely scenario that he's picked by a 190D, LA7 and Spit16 that show up. Great "fight".

Tried to log in last Sunday at 4pm and see only 40 players on. I wonder why only 40 players. It's Buzzsaw. Every damn time. Nothing but tiny little dars. Very little action on the map. I log. Nothing for me there. Huge maps on the weekends kill the fights early in the afternoon and come primetime, we get a few more in there who try to fight, but it's not where it should be because people don't see any action and leave.
The gang dweebs in their gang rides are getting old. I roll into a fight and its 4 yak3s to fight against, get tangled up and one comes around to pick you. You cannot escape these planes. I shot down a guy, got tangled up, and before you know it, that guy has be-lined it right back to me as Im fighting 2 others to join back in the gang. There is no aircombat respect or unwritten rules. Everyone in their dweeb planes just ganging. It wouldn't be soooo bad if you didn't have to fly 5-10 minutes back to a field but it just gets old I guess. The naysayers say "well just get in a temp so they can't catch you, just fly 30k in your temp so they can't catch you". I ask them... is that really what you want? Everyone flying super easy fastest planes in the game at 30k? Yeah so much fun that is.. it's really a shame so many real fighters have left the game.
-
I might just bite the bullet and buy the sub for a bit..... I'm feeling sorry for y'all lol. Then again, I'm likely to just get blown out of the sky haha, my ACM needs work
-
Again maybe a way to force variety is to limit ma by planset cycling through ew, mw and late war...
Or lower the sides to two..
Or remove the crappy maps that kill gameplay...
Or do nothing....which is where I would put my money if it was a bet...

I think time has changed the makeup of those in this game. Now someone coming into the game for aerial combat with little experience will get eaten alive by those here that still love to fight. The few fighters that are here have years of experience at their craft. The learning curve is too steep. As it should be but that prevents new fighter jocks.
I started in 99 here. At that time people were moving over from WB. And the AW people. Back then there were no GV's in WB. EVERYONE FLEW. The caliber of fighters was very good and the numbers were high. Still had the gangers with altitude and the empty base takers, but the fighters were many and you found them in the fur..
As Kong said, once in a while there is some good fights. A couple of weeks ago....yes a couple of WEEKS, there was a similar fight when I was a rook. What a great time. Had a FM2 and was tearing it up. Good half hour of fun. I wish I could do it every day. You could do that back in the day.
My stable is a SpitV, FM2, Seafire, Yak3 and occasional Brewster. I flew the 51 out of boredom.. Cant fly it worth a damm but I'm grasping at straws..
Fly 10 minutes, die, rinse and repeat and then log.
Love to do it StepSis, but you have to know, I suck :D
They tried the early war, mid war, late war thing back in the day. People logged and waited for late war. Personally I like mid war plane sets but go figure.
Rant over (I think) and the cat is going to live.

Midwar, IMO, would have worked out much better with a smaller map that had closer bases. Similar to smog 8 style map from H2H. It was too big, there wasn't close combat fights and it still took 5-10 minutes to get to a fight. With low #s. That kills it. There was never a change to smaller maps more suited for the planes and I think thats why it seemed no different than the late war MA.

Good stuff when it happens , no doubt.

The large maps were doable when there was 400-600 people on line.
The large maps fail with 90 people.
I wish Dale would take the interest and have our map makers submit small maps. For approval. I did skins and no nothing about making maps, what is required etc. But we HAVE PEOPLE THAT DO.
Crap I would learn maps if there was "any" chance for approval. I got the time :D
The only requirements would be small maps, closer fields and tripling the hardness of CV's.
Then we'd have the best of both worlds. The base takers would continue, the alt monkey gangers could keep ganging...
And the fighters would have a census concentrated area in which to fight. You know, do that pilot stuff. Which is why I'm here.
As Eagler said, it will unfortunately just remain the same. A flying game played in the dirt..
-
Here's my take, having been here since 2010, and another 10 years in Fighter Ace prior to that.
We have maybe 50 fighter pilots left subscribing. If even that. The rest are WW2 players, who only fly planes to serve the war purpose in one way or another and don't really engage in any prolonged furballing. They're quick to jump in manned guns and GVs when enemy planes arrive.
Of those 50, maybe 10% are highly skilled, typically winning 90% of their engagements, regardless of their disadvantage. They'll be in the G6/K4, Spit8/9 and F4Us, sometimes Ki84 or Jug. Then there are about 20% who are skilled in SA, but less so in ACM. They fly very carefully, prioritizing survival, and only engage if they have substantial advantages. This is where you find the Tempest, Yak3, 190D and P51.
The other 70% are 1:1 players. Almost no chance of beating the 30%, but can find occasional fun burning around in Yaks, Spixteens and La7s, killing Brewsters and Zekes, or anyone else that gets caught up in an engagement or is unable to dodge the merge-HO. :bolt:
There are of course exceptions, but that's my random take on what's left of the air combat aspect of this game.
I don't have the answers on how to fix things. I watched the demise of my other beloved game, despite the huge amount of changes and efforts to respond to the community's wishes, right up until the end. I see the writing on the wall, but I still plan on being here until the end. Despite some folks' belief that it's the "uber" pilots that cause people to quit, I submit that it's the dedicated dogfighters that help and support squaddies and teammates that are sustaining this game.
I think smaller maps with more concentrated fights would certainly help. Getting rid of LW birds won't make any difference, since there will still be one plane that is faster than the others.
I still love this game for those rare nights that there are good fights. There's just nothing better than a sustained furball with close bases (Northco) or CV battles so it stays low and fast. It is sad and frustrating that air combat is the exception now. I can't tell you how many times already this month I've upped for a sortie, flown around for 30+ minutes without squeezing the trigger. That happened tonight, which is why I'm sitting here blabbing on the BBS.
But I will keep trying and keep hoping for that one good night, or even the one good fight, which makes it all worth it.
-
Simon I agree on all points. Including getting into a great fight on occasion does make it worth it.
-
Skilled players rarely fly spits.
-
ya know i never have problems finding or creating fights anytime of day... there can be 7 players in the MA and ill start something that will last hours everytime :neener: :rock :bolt:

Bull crap

If only that were so. I see very skilled players flying Spits, La7s, Doras, Franks, and Yak3s. Occasionally I will call them out, as in "Hey, [name], what in the world are you doing in a [dweeb plane]?" Sometimes they answer, sometimes not. I'm sure they justify it to themselves somehow.
Deal with it. Fights are more challenging if your opponent is better-armed.

Its sad when you have those who use stick stirring to the point of warping as a valid evasive maneuver. Generally its the Yak and Spit crowd doing this as of late. I too have been frustrated with the state of the MA lately, there are just no good sustained furballs or fights, especially off hours.
Getting someone into the match play arena is always fun, but good luck finding more than 2 or 3 other people a week willing to risk their Fight pilot egos in an actual somewhat fair contest.

OUCH!!!! :D I fly the spitXVI, because it is A-10 of the Era! 3 Bombs, as Gvs are, seem to be the IN Thing? Low alt and can still turn the table on higher fighters? There is a method to my Dweebness :devil ENY of late, has forced me into Mid-War planes...forgot how much I missed my 109-G2 :D

I'm more of a bomber nut, but yes I generally agree with the OP. Played extensively when AH2 came out.
I'm playing now after a long break, but having experienced what it once was with bombers, escorts, flying into a hornet's nest of enemies co-alt or higher at 20K-plus in a main arena of hundreds, today's arena is very lacking. If you couldn't find a fight, you sure as hell could create one back then. Miss it.
I just don't stick around as long in a session anymore. I'll play, but... yeah. :/

Well I think y'all will be happy to hear that I've added my drop to the bucket. I subscribed yesterday, since I'm no longer a broke teenager, just an almost broke teenager.
Loaded in on the Knights team, went in to help roll a field, but it was overwhelmed quickly, so I put my Pony back down. Saw a bomber radar contact across the map, so I boogied over there. Upped a Spit 14, climbed like a demon, turned out it was a formation of B-17s on a bombing run at 10,000 feet. Dizz and I tag teamed them, made quick work without any casualties.
Then I decided to get offensive, roaming to enemy territory. Long story short, I made the mistake of flying a full fuel Pony over enemy airspace, so Nox came up in his K4 and ended me.
Overall I'd say it's worth the sub even still with reduced pilots.
But you won't find me in a GV or turret anytime soon, furballing for life!

Well; to me anyways. That close nit family type of game (squad was always at the end for me a good if not the only reason to log on and give it my best to find a good fight! That "close knit family thing (game too mind you) fell off and out of the whole deal when we ended up having AHK 22!!! how many freaking versions of ww2 fighters do we need to have a good time flying at night??? nahaww. Im not ever not at all any more going to fight myself just to log in and try to find one of those fights that makes the whole night for me... LOL my life is just far too busy these days for the 3-4 hours a night anyways) Though I used to have one heck of a life that involved my Aces High fest every night!
I may or may not come back or find my second Life of my On line world is almost strictly AH all of the time. lol i doubt it. I am so rusty and the big part of "my on line life" has been dead gone and buried. :( ahh what the hell im sure those times of me being missed at night are long gone and over with!!! lol right?

I just hop on for short 15-30 minute hops, usually 1 or 2 sorties.
I just got off actually, was attacking a gunnery field from our carrier. Upped a Seafire, whaddya know? 3 bandits, one C2, one Yak-3, one Mosquito. I make 2 successful passes on the Yak but don't damage him despite a bunch of hits. Then the Mosquito proceeds to chase me back to the carrier, where I manage to land, albeit while knocking out my tailwheel and engine.
I up another Seafire, this time to help out StepSis engage the Yak. As I'm climbing towards the fight, I look back, and whaddya know? A Jug is diving for the carrier. I turn and dive after him, but I quickly realize I'll never catch a Jug in a Seafire. Then the C2 sneaks up on me and lights me up.
Lots of fun for 30 minutes though, even if the carrier was a loss.

That was a fun fight. Lol I’m still tickled that someone was soooo upset with my aim. Usually people are happy to see me miss every shot opportunity.

I'm regressing..
Over the last 3 days I've flown for four hours in a Corsair, a Nicky a zeke 5, a FM2, a Spit 9 and a Yak3.
In that time I died every time and I don't recall pulling the triggerr..
After some self evaluation, I think it was the beer..
-
I've always loved the 109s, but could never hit anything with them. My aim stinks when Im shooting 50's let alone those funky german cannons. But I decided that Im going to fly nothing but the G2 for a tour or two (except what the boss loads up on squad night). Talk about a disadvantage these days.
Less fights all around, then the most type of fights you get are gangs of Yak3s, or a bunch of ponies and 190s that do nothing but pick and run.Not to mention the "super" spit16. I certainly picked a tough time to try and learn a plane!
I really wish Hitech would TRY a few changes. Run them for a week or two, maybe a tour and see how it goes. Get rid of buzzsaw, roll Kongs map that gets reset fast a few times in the map rotation. Change the perk value on the Yak3 (so they get ENYed out quicker). These are just settings that he can tweak and adjust on the fly, no major overhaul needed. See what effects it has on the arena we have NOW as opposed to the arena we use to have 15 years ago with the much larger population.
Id also love to see him upgrade the web pages and BBS, add a few free planes and GVs to the main arena and then RE-RELEASE the game on Steam as Aces High "OVERBLOWN!" Pointing out an upgraded system with FREE planes available ALL THE TIME!!! in the MA.

Glad to see you have subscribed! Welcome to the gauntlet. Flying in the MA will take your airccombat to the next level. The big fights are so much fun. Hopefully one day you can catch the Combat Challenge in the special events. It's right up your alley. Glad you are finding some fun in these slow times .When a big battle comes it is soo much fun. We all have our gripes but we stick around because aircombat battles are what we live for.

I actually agree with pretty much all of your points.
The G2 is probably my favorite plane in the game. It tests your defense ability but is so much fun to dogfight in. The flaps are great. The gondolas are awesome. It's really the best plane for reversals, overshoots, and snapshots. That's why most have a hard time flying it. It will greatly help you with your defensive ACM. It's a really fun plane.

No kidding! It's also interesting, the added aspect of takeovers that I don't see in offline missions. Flying an Fi 156 to spot for my pals on the ground is rather relaxing. I actually helped down a Jug in a 156 haha, he collided with me, then he lost a wing and smacked into the ground, while I kept flying. Later on I also got to defend against two guys that kept trying to sneak C-47s onto our field, one high, one low.
But the absolute best part of today was saving Field 116. It was an epic for the ages! I take off in my Spitfire 16 alone to defend against no less than THREE bandits! One Jug, one Pony, and one Spit 9. I managed to knock ALL THREE down totally solo! At one point I had the Spit9 on my tail and the Jug in my sights. Landed a deflection shot on the Jug, then turned and nailed the Spit. At some point I got the Pony too. Then I finished the sortie by knocking out an invading Jeep and helping spot for a Panzer in the town before landing.
It may be slow, but there's still some epic fights to be had! :airplane:

It does all that and more..
With gonds its a HO nightmare
Aim just slightly high and pull the trigger at 1k if closure is at high rate
They usually pop nicely :)
Mention that as with the gangs these days it's usually a survival move
That is my plane if the red bar is medium
Large bar and it's a k4
Small bar and it's a 109f4 as it can outfly majority of pilots even if they are in a zero/brew..just can't chase down the lw planes

The gondies are the main reason I fly the G2 and not the F. The G2 is more agile than the G6 and is better with ACM maneuvers. I cannot stand chasing a plane for a miles hitting them with multiple 20s from 1 cannon and not finishing them off quickly enough. It makes it so easy to get ganged. The gondies are the best for quick snapshots to really get some lead in and punish them. With the G2 being light, it can out roll most planes with fhe gondies in the MA. Still wish the F had gondies like the old days. I like to roll the K4 if there is a big red dar and we need defense due to its quick exceleration. I like the G14 for flying to bases and shooting lower cons defending their base. I fly the 109s just a like a shark when it enters into feeding mode. Quick strikes in and out. You cannot fly it like a P51 and BnZ very easily and dive away when you are in trouble. That's why so many have a hard time aiming with it. It's all about the snapshot/crossing shot with the 109 and shooting when planes are just about to enter your sights. It's all about setting up your shots in the 109 and it takes some practice.

All this talk about 109s made me try it earlier. :rofl
Let's just say it wasn't pretty. First sortie out flew high altitude escort for B-24 Liberators. Immediately got downed by a Spit. Second sortie was air support for 2 formations of Lancs hitting an ammo depot. I promptly proceeded to stall out and smack into a tree.
This is gonna take A LOT of practice.....might just run back to offline missions to get a feel for the 109.

Haha! Yeah the Spit is a trainer plane for the 109. The 109 is more advanced due to field of view, diving capabilities, gun positions, flap usage, and understanding of vertical ACM maneuvers. It's more of an advanced plane for the MA.

Sounds like the Gods of Aces High have left the air and moved elsewhere.

109E has always been my fave with the 109G14 being a close second. Lately I’ve been using the K4 more just to run folks down.

Wow, why so pessimistic.
It's possible to defeat multiple enemies even when they have the advantage. It's fun to try because when you do it you feel incredible.
That's why I like Aces High.

Exactly! I upped a Spit into three bandits who were right on top of my field. Knocked em all down. Couldn't have been happier, and stuff like that is why I play!
It's also why I decided it's worth it to part with $15/month..... :x

When I do that there will be a parade.

My only gripe after playing this weekend is the same map (CraterMA) was up for 6 days LOL. That's gotta get old for some people. Also, I continue to have rubber bullets with crossing shots when my front end doesn't see the bullets hit, and it just bugs the hell out of me. I had an excellent fight with an F6F. I finally get a reversal and put a spurt of bullets thru em as he crosses infront of me. I do hardly any damage with my ki84 and give him only an oil leak. Then, I get him crossed up again and put another spurt of bullets in him as he crosses me, completely spray his plane with bullets all over the cockpit and tail. I give him a gas leak and of course only half the tail. Now his plane can turn better than mine and is lighter. After 2 minutes he rolls around me and gets my 6 while being able to maintain E while climbing to me. I'm thinking you've got to be kidding me. He finishes me and then proceeds to fly 15 miles back to base to go land... I'm like, how the hell did his oil last that long nore did I give him a PW? Just crazy. Was a really fun intense fight though. I shoot another 262 with atleast 3 20MMs in a crossing shot after he was already damaged with 2 oil leaks. I dont appear to do any damage. Idk... my style of fighting depends on planes being unflyable when I rake their plane with 10 20mms as they cross my sights so when planes don't die after 2 of those passes while I have 2 20mms and 2 50 cals. It really aggravates the hell out of me. I seem to be having this issue so often when I play now.

It went the whole 7 days.
Now ND Isles is up, going on 4 days :bhead
I despise those maps, Crater was awesome in AH2 though.
Some must like them…

Yeah one map up all weekend is rough, 4+ is too much. Crater is an alright map but really needs atleast 100+ to get some bigger fights. With 50 players it's just hard to find condensed action.

If I may make a suggestion gentlemen if you want more players go hit up some aviation subs on Reddit. I'm careful when I talk about AH because I don't want to sound like an ad shill but if someone mentions how much they love (insert WWII platform here) I'll casually mention AH and see if they bite. Hitech isn't advertising that I know of so, to me, the best way to draw new players is to advertise ourselves. Then when someone comes in that is new take the time to mentor and teach them what it's taken you many years to learn.
Just a thought.

Funny but folks complain they are up too long or not long enough.
