Title: Special 109's for the 3rd Battle of Kharkov FSO
Post by: Devil 505 on July 30, 2022, 11:31:40 PM
Bf 109F-4 of the Royal Hungarian Air Force's 101st Squadron "Puma". In the winter of 1942-43 the Hungarians operated several squadrons of former Luftwaffe 109F's over the front in eastern Ukraine, including Kharkov. This skins is based on a profile of questionable accuracy, so I will not be submitting it to HiTech until better reference can be found. A non-winterized Hungarian 109F is definitely in the cards for the near future, there's plenty of good reference for those.

Bf 109G-2 flown by Major Kurt Brandle of Stab. II/Jg 3 in the winter of 1942-43. In the wake of the German defeat at Stalingrad, II/Jg 3 followed the retreat westward into Ukraine's Donbas region, eventually taking part in the Axis counter attacks in early 1943 from it's base in Donetsk. Brandle would achieve his 150th aerial victory during the battle of Kursk. He was killed in action on November 3, 1943 over the Netherlands.

Brandle's aircraft features black command chevrons and the horizontal Gruppe ID bar on the fuselage. The Jg 3 "Udet" crest is painted on the cowl along with a large red dot, another identifier of II Gruppe. A crude, but heavily applied whitewash was painted over the standard gray camouflage colors.

That doesn't really look like it's whitewashed. Seems like it's the standard gray scheme with only light mottling on the sides. The left side of the photo is so washed out that it makes it impossible to tell for sure.

I did find one definite winterized aircraft, V-07

I just don't know enough about the Hungarian squadrons to make an educated guess about how the front end of the plane was actually painted.

Seen the profiles for #07 missed the photo for it. It would be good to have it in game as well as the scenario I think.  :aok

Found a slightly cleaner image V-7 by the looks of it.

Also just a little more of V-07 visible 2 min 57.   At 2.46 mark cant read the text in the book it maybe the nose of V-07 as well as some other white wash planes.
