Can one of the smart guys explain to me why Toad's paint thread got closed? There was some really good info in there and I'm sure the topic hadn't yet run its course. That thread seemed really innocent to me...
Help me out?

Random application of precautionary punishment/cancellation is how the Soviets did it.
-
there's a couple of posts that have nothing to do with the topic and since some people are very strict about the rules, it got locked.
that's my guess.

Seemed like a pretty obvious troll to me, just like the current 'watch grass grow' thread.

Sounded like a genuine question to me.
Why not just answer it, instead of skirting around the rules.

What rule did I allegedly skirt around?
I did answer. I said it seemed like a troll post. How else do I need to spell it out for you?

You don't need to spell anything. Keep trying the ice.

How are tips on painting correctly a "troll"?
Who was being trolled?
What was being trolled?

What do you do in your spare time, when you're not moderating twitter?
-
I WAS on avacadoter, <TWITTER USER> they were quite insistent I never come back. I mainly use it to follow various columnists anyhow, although I DID manage to get Dagen McDowell to comment on one of my posts once

So what has happened as a result of many not being able to handle 3rd grade rules like sticks and stones…but words won’t hurt you and tattle telling is anyone can get a thread locked they don’t like?
Deleting the post and inserting Rule # seems was a better way.

That's strange. Maybe it's your aftershave.

I expect I'd need to shave first

Guessing you and/or the others haven’t reported it yet?

I'll tell you my honest answer, Sparky.
It's because most rules are subjective. They just are. I think Toad would tell you himself that it was a bit of a troll - but in good fun. Not really meant to incite anyone.
Rules and moderation are all subjective though there's just no way around it.
I have mentioned before that this forum could be run just as cleanly (if that's the word) with about 4 or 5 rules. There doesn't have to be a litany of specific things, but a broad set of maybe 4 guidelines.
For instance, I don't think any subjects, like politics, should be off limits. For one thing, that's way to broad of a rule. Anything can be considered politics. Is climate change political? I'd say yes. Very much so.
Instead the rules could be meant to cover behavior and not specific infractions.
1. No spamming
2. no personal attacks
3. no NSFW content
4. use common sense. This is a family friendly website and this is a business.
That's where I would start. That's the foundation of pretty much everything. Then you moderate it with consistency and you give reasons for moderation at times when things may need to be clarified.
Number one thing other than the rules is consistency in moderation. A moderator should be known and be reasonably available.
The O'Club is a place to discuss things not related to the game. There are 50 other subforums for game discussion. Nobody has to come to the O'Club .
I also suggested that the O'Club, or a new forum like it should be membership by request only. If you don't request to be in that forum you won't even see, it. Make that new forum have a version of the 4 rules.
Why not? Everyone would be happy.
-
Gina why not follow this suggestions on your own website and see if it actually works
-
semp, that's exactly what I do and have done for 15 years.
The moderation here should be consistent, whatever the rules are. Since rules are subjective you don't need to have 89 rules specifying specific things.
The main thing is being consistent, being available and explaining actions when needed.
-
If I were Dale I might even add a rule "don't piss me off" and then let it be known when someone pisses him off. Just be around and let people know where you stand on stuff but let the place breath a little.

For the most part it is... but
4. use common sense. This is a family friendly website and this is a business.
It isn't a business
And semp you were never modded there so?

No one ever had any posts modded or deleted ever at either place, except when I deleted my account at FW and deleted all of my threads.
One person was permanently banned at FW and that's it.
At ICOM I sated in the rules and then reminded people that I not put up with personal attacks or screwing with people. I even reminded everyone again today. There is no place that you can point to that has a more fair moderator than either of my forums. I guarantee it. No one.
Anyone here can go to either place and test that. See for yourself

Since when is a Corporation no longer considered a business?

Sounds like a cool place, perhaps you should spend more time there and less time here.
-
another thing that I'll add. Everyone knows that I am a member of my own sites. I act as a member but NEVER do I use moderation powers to EVER mess with anyone or treat anybody any differently - even If I hate their guts. Absolutely that is my number one rule.
Semp - when were you ever moderated? Arlo was temporarily banned because he didn't follow my rules and didn't listen to my warnings.
You may not like me. You may not like other people's views, but you will never be moderated for expressing your views.
-

What are you talking about?
-
Of course AH is a business. Anyway, even if it were not a business it's still meant to be a family friendly place.
If I were Dale, I would cater to the guys that hung out here 15 years ago. Those people are the kind of people that liked this game. All those players that were PNG by Skuzzy over what? So five people who don't even play the game can sit over here and cry about stupid things that don't even matter?
Lost customers.
AH is never going to be anything other than a niche game - but the people in that niche were driven off in huge numbers.
-

semp was referring to icom as was I.

Sounds like a cool place, perhaps you should spend more time there and less time here.
Maybe you should worry less about what others do?

The rules I listed were my hypothetical rules for this place.

I'm a customer and I have been involved with this community since 2001.

Please explain how posting my experiences using paint is a troll. Was it controversial? Was it inflammatory? Was the intent to provoke other users into an emotional response? Did it attack other users?
It was a decent thread that pretty much went two pages without any problems at all.
So how was it trolling?

Seems a lot lately here people are seeing things that are not there and easily offended thin skin.

You should ask which one of your buddies complained.

Ever since Skuzzy told us all to report rule violations as we see them I have dutifully followed orders.
Think of me as the political spy in your apartment complex that watches your every move.

That means since 2008, at least. In the original rules by Pyro reporting was not suggested. The actual rules have been the same since the early days.
