Title: How B17's should be flown
Post by: mERv on September 27, 2022, 04:19:19 PM
I am going to make what I would like to call a series of advanced bomber tactics videos this fall as time allots showcasing various fight and flight techniques along with bomber strategy for every scenario regular players may face in the main arena. Would like to start with a few videos ive shared on the AH3 facebook page starting with one I uploaded today from 9/16 of this year.

There is only 144 Bombers in that formation. 50+ fighters but you don't get to see most of them in that clip.  :D

It used to be, indeed. I miss the days of throwing together large impromptu buff missions. Other fighter squadrons would cover, and opponents would come up in sheer numbers to stop us. 91st, DHBG, and others used to get together routinely. It was a sight to behold, and the banter between players was awesome en route. We've been trying to bring it back to the main.

ET37s B29 "combat memorial flight" made that B17 formation look tiny in comparison, that was a long mission bombing bish strats at FL280 most of us were shot down on the way home but i managed to belly land my last B29 drone on 3 engines.

I know old ET wouldn't have it any other way <S> sir

ET37s B29 "combat memorial flight" made that B17 formation look tiny in comparison,

Maybe so, but in my video all the aircraft are controlled by the AI. I had 4 full boxes per group and 4 full groups per wing (4 wings) for a total of 192 B-17's plus 60 fighters. I had to reduce the number of B-17's because the AI had the foremost groups running into the last groups of the wing ahead of it and I kept losing bombers on mission start. Now there is only 144 B-17's with the 60 fighters. I might know how to prevent that issue now but that's still to many AI aircraft in one mission.

Interesting to note that I originally had 192 bombers with 12 bombs each carpet bombing St Olmer airfield. On the first run I was watching the base from a static point on the ground for the bomb drop (I wanted a clip of the massive destruction I was sure that I was about to see). 12 bombs x 192 = 2304 explosions in rapid succession. The mission and game crashed so I never got my clip. lol

If I could have made the bomber stream bigger, I would have. It would have been pretty awesome to watch a 1000 bomber raid flying by with 600 escorts and god only knows how many Luftwabble dweebs. ;)

I miss those days with the 484'th and our B-24s.

Hey they took away rudder/auto controls in F3 view. What was the purpose of that? I think its also not in bomb sight view as well.

Some of those raids were nothing short of epic. Would dominate the MA for an hour or more. You would see a stream of bombers 60-100 players or more span across an entire sector hitting multiple targets along the way. Nothing like seeing them from above as your scramble with field supplies in anticipation to a strat.

historically couldn't agree more.

In Aces High however, learning evasive maneuvers and aggressive fighting techniques over the years has made all the difference in my time investment as a bomber in today's AH.
