Improved health care is one reason for the rising population. People just live much longer than what they used to - at 86 my dad has been the oldest known male in his family since the 1600's for over a decade.
Consuming is a bigger issue than growth of population.

There's a reason social security was set to 65
It was just about end of life for most so payouts were short

Life expectancy at birth in 1930 was indeed only 58 for men and 62 for women, and the retirement age was 65.
