Title: B17 air to air kills

I read somewhere (cant remember exactly where) that B17s killed more enemy aircraft than any other allied aircraft.  Has anyone heard anything like this before?  I do know for a fact that on one mission B17s gunners claimed 50 enemy aircraft shot down,but in reality only 3 german aircraft had been destroyed.

They overclaimed wildly. Im not sure of this 100% but I heard that on average they overclaimed by a factor of 20.

For example, once a single B17 raid claimed more LW fightes killed then existed in France at that time.

I think they overclaiming was due to the fact that on a raid each B17 with 12 machine guns blazing away multiple b17's would score hits or believe they did and each gunner would claim a enemy craft destroyed.  ;)
