Title: Aces High Squad Timeline
Post by: oboe on June 12, 2023, 10:12:08 AM
Quite a long time ago, I did some research on the oldest squads in Aces High, and produced the timeline chart below.  I think it was probably back in 2015, and my requirement to be included at that time was your squad must be currently active active in AH and have been establish at least ten years prior (hence the 2005 cut off).

I logged in this morning briefly, and was happy to see players from some of these squads still at it!   I saw players from the Arabian Knights (AKs), Flying Tigers AVG, 99th ASTAG, POTW, Sick Puppies, Gunfighters, DFA, Blue Thunder and the **Regulators**.

So I thought its time to add another ten years worth of squads to the timeline.   Let's go to 2015.   So, if you're in a currently active AH squad that was established before 2015 (or before 2005 and not listed here) let me hear from you.   Post your squad logo here (at least 100x100 px, pls), and your squad start date and I'll add your squad to the chart.  Would be nice if you posted a little bit of your squads background history, too - notable players or founding members, etc - just for posterity.

Also I need to here specifically from the **REGULATORS** and Blue Thunder.  I think you guys probably quality but I can't find a squad logo or webpage for you.

Thanks all!

Proud to say I have flown with 4 of those squads over the years, along with a couple of others that aren't on that list.  :airplane: :joystick: I know for certain that list could be so much bigger haha. Really quite a shame that most of these guys have disappeared.  :cry

I took over the Flying Tigers 135th squad in AW. I think we had about 35-40 members. It pretty much dissolved after migrating to AH, some thought it was sacrilegious to fly another sim/competitor. <shrug> AH1 was exactly the update we waited for and didn't get in AW.

I remember all the squads at the top from way back in AW very well. They have always been serious competition and rivals, as I think they were mostly CZ and my squad was BZ.

Yep, damn near the entire game population migrated to AH when new owners EA.com pulled the plug. Quite a few of us have flown in the same world (AW or AH) for about 35 years. And we prolly will until we can't anymore. It's not just a game to many of us. We might get a little feisty when a dog poops in our backyard. :)

Death From Above squadron was officially born on June 6th, 1998. Originally formed in AirWarrior (R.I.P.),

I started in AW around 1992 or 93 with VMF-525, moved them to AH but it died off after the move. Joined DFA later.

I'm not exactly sure when the 327th was formed, I flew with them in AW FR, then here. I understand Gooss is the CO now, KOOL, Stick, and others may or may not be around. It's a fairly storied squad, used to be super active. Had a few real veterans on the roster.

Thanks for the updates, fellas.  Mayhem, I'm curious to know how this doc is received in the IL-2 forum.    Everybody, point of pride here - if your squad was established prior to 2015 and have been flying more or less continuously since, and if you've got at least half a dozen solid members and a logo - lets get it listed on the timeline.  Post your start date and squad emblem in this thread.   I suppose I should also grey-out squads that are no longer flying....I'm not sure about the BKs or The Few...

:salute to every one of you!

While I think of it, there are 2 awesome squad logos I've lost track of.  One is the Elite Aces logo - IIRC, featuring a cartoon wolf head with his teeth bared and tongue hanging out, ready to eat with a knife and fork in his hands.

The other, I don't know the squad anymore, but it was a grizzled-looking pig, with razor stubble and dressed in flying gear.  I think he was leaning out of a cockpit or something like that.  IIRC, the story is this art was specifically commissioned from a commercial artist, and was just the best I've seen.  Can't believe I lost track of it, but it was several computers and a couple of moves ago...

If anybody has a copy of these, I'd appreciate a link.  Thanks!

I'll add it in the next version of the timeline chart.   I'll also go through the current squad listing and try 'graying out' the emblems for squadrons which are no longer in the active squad listing...

EDIT:

Here's the latest, with defunct squads greyed out.  I feared the damage would actually be worse.  Some 870 people belong to active squads, according to the home page's squad list totals.

The 412th is not defunct they are an FSO Only squadron. I still get updates and mission plans from Nef.
Also The Flying Circus is way older, I think they go back to 88.

Thanks for the info guys.

The 332nd Flying Mongrels are not listed in active squads, so they are greyed out.  Their start date was 1997.  I've re-activated the 412th (thank you), moved the Flying Circus' start date and added the Claim Jumpers, the Fightin' 49ers, & JG 11, though not sure I have correct start dates for them.   Has anyone got a correct start date for the Flying Circus?  I think when I orginally made this, they had a website with a history, but I cannot verify.  I updated some squad emblems from Arlo's squad pages - The Avengers, the Unforgiven, & 99th ASTAG have a new look.  Could not find a decent quality logo for the original Flying Circus so that has been updated to a new look, at least temporarily.

Some other squads I'd like info on include Elite, 325th Checkertails, and Aces and 8s...

There was a Flying Circus listed in old scores from 88 in Air Warrior. I posted a link to the pdf that had some of those scores .... it was hosted by the Muskies but they went dark a few years ago so DoK Gonzo is hosting them now.

What I do not know is if the AH Flying Circus is the same as the AW Flying circus. Most of the original early Air Warrior Squadrons where formed within a few months of each other after Air Warrior went live on GEnie. I didn't get involved until 1992.

It's likely there was some connection between the AW and AH groups.  I think it looks good in '88, and we have plenty of other online squads listed that were formed before AH was released.  Just wish I could get a nice hi-res original logo for them.

Thanks for your help keeping this doc accurate, gents.  Appreciate it.  I'd like more information on the top 25 squads if anyone's got some.  Especially sorry to see the demise of the Mongrels, Musketeers and the Flying Tigers AVG...

TA57x is the CO of TA's Aerofighters and by extension TA's murder of crows Inc, i will try to get in touch with him too see when the squad was exactly created but i believe around 2005 era.

Is there a way to find the squadron insignia on the squads page?

Thanks, TryHard.  The squads page is just a text listing of the squads - no graphics are included.  I can get a 64x64 bmp from the Squad folder in AH installation folders, but that is too small to be useful.  I like at least 100x100 px image.  If they ever made a squad webpage, they might have a large version.

Nefarious, thanks for the info - I've re-activated the 412th on the timeline.

There is a squad called "Cutthroats", established 1996, but not sure if that's the one you're referring to.

Oboe, the original Gunfighters had no connection to the Gunfighters formed in Bland in 1990-91.  I do not know if that is the squadron you are tracking, it was "Scav's" squad of we go diving down fame.

Also the DFA were formed in 1990-91 in Aland.  Again I do not know if that squad is the DFA you are tracking, but it was quite the famous and popular squadron.

Thanks for the info guys.   Will always try to keep this doc correct.

Turt21, the "Borg" haven't come up.  I don't recall them, and they are not listed in the current active squads page.  Could be they came and went between the time I originally made the chart and now?   I've been in and out of the game a couple of times since then...

Fencer, thank you - I'll update the JG 11 start date.  I also like the squad emblem in that link better, so I'll use that one.

I believe Hitech was one of the original Gunfighters?   Not sure, and I found no website for them.  But I think it was a very early squad that had a number of handles now revered in the the community.  Pretty sure there was a BB thread about this chart when it was first produced, and I *think* that is where I got the original info.  I think I remember creating that logo with Yosemite Sam for the chart way back then.    Maybe Arlo knows more about them and can fill us in.   My intent was to track the lineage of current squads in AH as far back as I could.   I think a few go back to the America Online days and the WWI flight sim, but I can't recall its name...

I got a 1998 start date for the DFA from their website: http://dfa-squad.org/DFA_info.htm (http://dfa-squad.org/DFA_info.htm).

Yes, Hitech was one of the original Gunfighters back in the early days of AW.  So were a lot of other famous people.  The squadron didn't initially carry over to AH.  Grits resurrected it as an AvA (or, more accurately, a Combat Theater) squad sometime after 2001.  I wish I had saved his very comprehensive write-up about the squad's history...but I didn't.  Fork may be able to add to this.

Ah, no I don't think I've ever heard of them.  Not listed in the currently active squad page, but they may have been at one time.

Anyone remember the 444th Mafia or something like that?   They had a cool logo.  Still looking for the logo with a Walt-Disney style wolf, licking his chops with knife and fork in hand - I want to say squad name was "Elite Aces + 1 Mexican"...

I was co of the 444th Air Mafia when we made the switch over to AH. Taz, then Mugs took over the squad for a number of years untill it was disbanded. I think I still have the whole squad web site on my computer

It's my understanding there was a squad in AW using the name Death From Above prior to the current DFA.  I'm not sure what happened to the earlier DFA, but I assume they must have disbanded prior to 1998.

Doing some research revealed that the 327th Steel Talons was formed in December 1998, formally. The original group flew in A land in the FR arena in Air Warrior III, and was part of the original KOTH Tournament. The core group also attended the AW III Con in 2000, and won 6 awards in the Ladder Tournaments. When EA killed Air Warrior III, we moved to Aces High. Several have gone inactive off and on over the years. We've also had a number who have made their final flight. The squadron still has a website, https://327th.com/main.htm (https://327th.com/main.htm), with a full roster https://327th.com/roster.htm (https://327th.com/roster.htm), a history of the formation of the squad in Air Warrior III https://327th.com/history.html (https://327th.com/history.html), and a memorial https://327th.com/GoldenTalonsRoster.htm (https://327th.com/GoldenTalonsRoster.htm).

Oboe,

The Gunfighters were formed in Bland in 1991 as part of a Group with the WarHawks and The Musketeers.  I do not know were you are getting the 1988 date from unless we are talking about two different squadrons.  The original CO was Lancer a guy from Arizona.  I think Heater and HiTech were both in that squadron at the same time.  The Turkey Hams were the squadron I was trying to remember, Jeff "Quarters" Hanna was their original CO.  Scavanger was in that squadron.

I suggest you check out this thread..

The "GumBiters"!  Yee-haw!   That was fun reading.   Thanks for the info Fencer - I don't recall where my original dates came from; I found my original thread where I had it listed as "late 80s" - Hitech posted in that thread linked below, saying he was an original member of the squad, but I don't recall where the date came from.   I've moved their start date to 1991 per your suggestion.

https://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,369828.0.html (https://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/index.php/topic,369828.0.html)

Also, from that thread and the wonderful invention of the internet wayback machine, I was able to find IMO one of the great all-time squad logos:

I'll have to grey this out as the squad is no longer active, but I wanted you guys to see it.  Here's what Dos Equis said about it:

Quote

I commissioned an artist by the name of Mary Lynn Skirvin to draw the FlyingPigs logo. I'm ashamed to say I can't find the logo at the moment, and the flyingpigs.com web site is no more.
But it was so top notch that I had to send cease and desist letters to guys in Singapore who made coffee cups and t-shirts with the logo and sold them on the street. A USAF squadron approached
the Pigs and the flying pigs logo is now the official logo of a real B2 bomber, the logo was etched on the plane itself, on a steel plate near the ladder.

Latest iteration:

Now, one more squad logo I'd like to find.  I think it was from a group called the "Elite Aces + 1 Mexican" and it featured Disney's Big Bad Wolf character posing with a knife and fork, ready to devour noobs.

Oboe, KOOL has been in and out over the years. The email address on the squad site might still be good.

Yes, we used to welcome and train new flyers, it was part of the squad platform. So we had a ton of people go through.

Arial Crowd Control Service (A.C.C.S.) was Wedge and Mage's Air Warrior squad, I'm not sure when they started. I was already a member of the 33rd Strike Group (Formed in 1996 on AOL) when I joined ACCS at Awcon 98 were Mage gave me an official A.C.C.S. windbreaker.

I left the ACCS when my primary squad's (33rd Strike Group) XO (Arrow) banned multi-squad membership, but that was right around the time Gamestorm/Kesmia was purchased by EA. Both the ACCS and 33rd made the move from Air Warrior III/MV to Aces High and they died around the same time (2003) Devi from the 33rd, Whels from ACCS, and Myself Joined the Damned at the same time back in 03/04.

I have the logo for the 33rd.

The ACCS Logo was pretty simple it was just a navy blue background with Yellow A.C.C.S. text with the smaller text words "Areal Crowd Control Service" underneath. it was ment to look like a government agency logo/jacket back like ATF FBI ect. I still have my windbreaker it's a little worn but you can see the logo on it.

I always saw ACCS and the Damned as pretty elite squads of AW, quite a few staff in them as well. I think ACCS was the first squad I saw, or remember.

Ironically,....the very first time I got on AW, when I found out my old 386 would barley pull it, my first AW name was "Arrow", I'm not the same guy.

My first BRAND NEW version of Air Warrior Flight Simulator (version 1.5) 1988.
https://www.amazon.com/Air-Warrior-Flight-Simulator-version-PC/dp/B000BM2SXY

Loggin on was a PITA. I couldn't play much because of overload, connection sucked. 486 (wow) Windows 95 and some more memory and video card I could play more, connection was still a PITA. AOL access to the game, when I finally could play on a more regular basis, and changed to "Animl" 1996.

Was CO for "Flying Tigers 135th" for several years.

1988 first time on AW and as HT said "...WOW, we've been at this a LONG time... " Yep, we have. I just got a 2nd wind. :)

in 88 I was 28. And while looking at that box I said "maybe I'm too old to be playing computer games" <blank stare> :)
