Bf 109G-10 flown by Heinz 'Esau' Ewald of II/Jg 52 in January 1945. At this point in the war, II/Jg 52 was based in Veszprém, Hungary and was embroiled in the heavy combat near Budapest. Ewald would score victories 30-78 over Hungary between October 6, 1944 and March 16, 1945. He would assume command of 6./Jg 52 on February 15 (later redesignated 7./Jg 52). Previously, he often flew as wingman of II/Jg 52's commander, Gerhard Barkhorn (301 victories). Ewald would survive the war with a total of 84 victories.
This skin represents a G-10 model Bf 109 and unlike my previous G-10 skins, I created a G-10 specific template for this skin with the correct hatch/stencil placement. The only giveaway that the models is actually a K-4 is the retractable tail wheel. This aircraft was an Weiner Neustadt built G-10 painted in the standard RLM 74/75 over 76 scheme. Markings include Hungarian theater markings consisting of a yellow tail band and "V" under the port wing. Ewald's personal art of a pig and stylized capital E are painted beneath the canopy. Photo reference and profiles show the side number and gruppe ID bar as being white despite 6./Jg 62 being allocated yellow markings and 4./Jg 52 being white. I have no explanation for this discrepancy so I elected to name this skin simply "II/Jg 52".
