Title: Why doesn't Aces High Sound Like This...
Post by: nrshida on August 03, 2023, 04:29:19 AM
And I say this as someone who hasn't used sound at all in Aces High for about eight years, but I would if:-
Is this not possible with spatial sound algorithms and modern soundcards & wotnot?

You should check out Challenger’s soundpack. External sounds, in particular, are excellent. It’s a thrill to be on the field when a P-38 takes off or buzzes the field…

Led Zeppelin and Molly Hatchet are usually competing with the game sounds in my headset
I miss the ability to adjust the wind noise as I used to have that cranked as it helps with sensing speed imo

120 ac and vehicles 4-6 sounds per object 400-500 sounds FMOD is a very robust program, once learned can do insane realism. For any one orrson its a lot of work. It might take 1 day+ per object
Some of the objects don’t exist in running condition to get authentic sounds from. Very few, if any, wwii sims have all authentic sounds. Most all games use simulated sounds.
Challengers files is the best chance. I hope his brother is still working on tweaking them.
That said, I’m finishing a video that exploits exterior engine sounds. While only using a few ac, they sound pretty damn good, and they are default sounds. I can hear fmod work, and impressed with what it really did to the game with 360 degree stereo sound.
Sometimes it has to do with how one mixes their sounds in game. Things that are too loud mask sounds you really should hear. Default is a flat line mix.
To know whats wrong one must first know whats right. Very few have this experience, it takes a team. Some may be fooled thinking real sounds are not right. Its a massive project.

Blame FMOD for making it nearly impossible for the average player to pick and choose soundpacks or make their own. The problem with airplanes starting up as the fly by you never happened until this god awful FMOD sound system.
All of this was possible with simple .wav files to be honest.

We have 360 degree sound before FMOD and aces high 3 were a thing. I know this because I've gotten into arguments with twinboom about why on earth he made stereo sounds for this game when Skuzzy has stated many times only mono recordings would properly work with 360 degree 3D surround sound the game used.

Yeah I could have sworn sounds in AH2, but I wasn't sure if I was just making that up.

Stereo sounds in FMod would be a mistake I think. My brother played with twin-engines to recreate their separation but it causes other problems.
Stereo wav files are not the same as 3D effects. in FMod you can change what is heard by distance and angle from the source. The Lancaster, C47, B17 and I think B29 are examples of what can be achieved and I think a lot more is possible with more time.
The startup sounds were a mistake. Rather than poop on the efforts that were made why not just use the defaults or start your own sound project. I think anyone could directly input a previous sound pack and make it work with FMod. It wont be as good as one that uses FMod as it is intended but its also not hard to do.

Not for years. My first AH3 PC didn't have a sound card and I just got used to it. There's enough visual cues I guess.
Yeah yeah! Still waiting on you, to "Show me the way"! :rofl Just funnin with ya,Sir! Its amazing how those sounds send Goosebumps, to me anyway! :airplane:

This is correct.

I don't think some realize what a massive difference FMod made, especially with engines cranked up masking it's other effects. I wasn't sure at first, until I dug into making this current vid with sounds and heard it work. I really think players interested in sounds should take up learning it. It was a great move for quality. It's not as complicated as it's just different. If you can learn Vegas or Premier, you can learn FMod.

Surely all movement involves relative and not absolute positions?
I'm sure it has more to do with economics and the reality of the 22 year old game code. If you hadn't noticed game updates hardly ever happen I don't remember the last time any one associated with game management was on the game playing. I think it runs on servers in a garage somewhere in Texas. As much as those of us that have been here for the long game, would love for new players and a return to the days of 600 in the arena on any given Saturday night, none of that is going to happen.

Servers are in a cooled closet more or less.

Amazing to fly. All I was allowed to do were a few flat turns left and right. The weather was shocking at Beachy so we flew over the estuary for 40 mins or so.
Strange thing though. After the first 15 mins of awe at being in a spit...I hate to even admit this...but it just felt like flying in any other aircraft. With elliptical wings and roundels admittedly. But the thrill was short lived. Perhaps because my work puts me in an aircraft multiple times a day six days a week. I'd rather go for a 40 min flight in a pitts special that I'm allowed to fly. But still, very special to have been in one flying.

I saw the link for it but how exactly to use it without having to mod folders to soo many sounds..

@Thrash99 - as I recall it was pretty easy, though not clearly explained. I did some digging and found these instructions from Chalenge:
"The whole idea of this pack is to replace all of the sounds with the sounds of the actual planes, vehicles, and guns as much as possible. Of course, some artistic license has to be used for some sounds that are just impossible to get these days. I have done what I could, but at the moment the pack is still incomplete.
In this ZIP file there are four *.bank files. You want to put those four files in your "\AcesHighIII\CustomSounds\Desktop\" folder (see attachment).'"
Hope that helps!

THIS! Thrash,Bud, for the Planes he was able to get done..AWESOME! Especially in Pony, and Jugs, 38's....also your hated Spitfires lol Yep, you know me...still a Spit Dweeb. There are a few "default sounds not stopping" errors..mostly with GVs..but it is worth the installing imo! Simple fix, if you dont like it.

From a post I made in Films board…
“ Also, side note. The odd P-51 issues some think come with Chalenger’s sound may not be the case. I’m making a Runstang vid, using default sounds and observing the same issues. Engine stopping and repeat re-starts. It would be very hard for Chalenger’s bro to figure out if its not all on his end. But MAY be corrected in FMOD settings of the files, it may require HT’s input on the game end.”

I've gone to his videos but unable to find a link for the zip files

i think zip files do not exist in the context we used to. there's only 4 files. no plane by plane zip file.
semp
Copy realized I didn't add the desktop folder when I extracted files into the custom sounds area
