Title: W.I.P. P-47N Thunderbolt pics, skin suggestions
Post by: oboe on October 25, 2023, 09:37:02 AM: It's taken me a while to get this far; the '47N doesn't port cleanly from the D-40. These images still use the ENV and PWR maps from the D-40; still working on details and layer balancing. Have to say, the P-47N seems like a real man's Thunderbolt. With it's wider wingspan, it sits lower on its gear and appears even more of a brute than the earlier models. 28 minutes in the MA on a 1/4 tank of fuel, and that's with P&W's R-2800-57 2,100hp big gulp engine.

I've identified some possible skinning subjects that haven't been done before:

I'm also eyeing United77's "Little Meaties Meat Chopper" and Fencer's "RED-E Ruth" for adoption updates; just wanted to gauge interest or objections to those. I get a weird kick out of Perdomo's cigar-chomping baby nose art, and of course RED-E Ruth is such a gorgeous pin up, who wouldn't want to work closely with her?

I see quite a few '47Ns in the MA - many fly Greebo's fantastic default skin, or one of Greebo's other beauties; I also see Fencer's skin with the black rudder and diamond emblem on the tail occasionally.

Can't offer any recommendations on skins as the only P-47N I would want is a Post-war bird from the Mass. National Guard.

Thanks for those images, Lyric! I hadn't found the name of Bitter's pilot, either, so the info is much appreciated. I can see the blue is going to be a challenge - so many shades shown depending on the color film and its degradation over time. I often see a greenish-blue, but think that has to do with the age and yellowing of the color film. I think I'll start with a True Blue, and darken it somewhat. Fantastic nose art image of Bitter, btw. The blue in that will be what I try to get to, maybe a little lighter. I think the blue on the plastic model is probably too light...

Thank you Greebo. The only other one I had in mind was called "Little Girl Yip" and had either a blue tail with a yellow heart, or a yellow tail with a blue heart emblem - I've seen conflicting images. Apart from that I have a desire to right the wrongs done to some of the Ns by the conversion to AH3, "Little Meatie's Meat Chopper" being the one in most desperate need of attention, IMO.

I believe your right looking at the small brush marks around the very edge it is a perfect match as the other side. That would be near impossible to reproduce.

None of the decals or profiles show nose art on both sides of this plane. In one of my books tucked away on the end of the field "Lovely Leo" has nose art on both sides.

From one of my books only three options could be available for this plane since we can see the number 9 in several images on the engine cowling
109 119 129.

We can rule out 109 based off the image below. Also the only image that I have found where you can see the triangles on the horizontal tail clearly.

Interesting that the tail device was repeated only on the left stabilizer, not both. I've seen this depicted both ways.

I think the blue triangle is incorrectly oriented; the tip should be pointing at the outside tip if the stab, as if it is a reflection of the triangle on the tail (shown in the photo of the flight of 4) below.
