He's gonna need to fly it first. Not released yet. Of course he may be an insider and adviser.

Pfffttt.  This is the internet, my dude.  I think we should form our opinions here and now!

I already know not all the helmets are right:

Outwardly, very accurate cockpit layout and exterior.  The continuous vibration depicted is unrealistic, especially the vertical stabilizer.  The Phantom was built like a brick s**thouse.   So, the vibration is only accurate during heavy maneuvering (G load).  Then, the vibration was there.  During preflight the Rhino was famous for not budging a bit when bumped into.  The aux air doors on the belly, frequently caught the unaware crew chief or pilot/wso by suprise when inadvertently turning around during the duck walk preflight, resulting the famous “Phantom Bite”.  Then, there were TERs and MERs that were common noggin impact points.  In any case, the Phantom NEVER budged at all.

Then, the “E” model with the nose gun, 640 rounds of 20 mm, firing rate of 6,000 rounds per minute, provided 3 two seconds bursts.  What a rush that was!

I think they are showcasing the vibrations and twistyness of the airframe under duress. Most pc sims do neither. Heatblur is doing the A-6 also. I'll preorder both and not be disappointed.

Spending time in the Heatblur F-14 gave me a sense of familiarity with the airplane. How close that was to reality I know I don't know but it was comfortable.

This is satisfying but takes more than a little practice.

All the wiggling was a little surprising.  Maybe the vibration and wiggling was because in that shot they were burning in a high speed at NOE.  Could ground turbulence beating them up shake it like that?

In any case, you should do the trial.  I think everyone here would be interested in your honest evaluation base on your first hand experience.

Given past pre-order cycles, it might not be available until end of year.  Starting pre-orders is often around 2-3 months before early access release.

Having only flown private civil aviation airplanes my real world experience in flying is obviously very limited. My brother flew helicopters in the Army though including the OH-58 as a scout and the Cobra and A model Apache. He has noted some shortcomings in the DCS Huey and Apache modeling but is impressed enough with the attention to detail to continue enjoying the AH-64D.

Just formation flying, with a connection.

They say formation flying is easier in VR. I tried VR but it is just too much trouble for me. Maybe one day. I have successfully air refueled just about every plane in the game. More challenging than shooting down or bombing the AI.

What troubles do you have with VR?

I can't go back to monitor play regardless how much better it looks with higher resolution

I spend a lot of time in DCS creating and tweaking missions. Can't do that in VR. Then there are many things you can't map to your HOTAS. If I go back to VR I'll have to get something like the PointCTRL. I had the original Oculus and the res wasn't good enough to easily read instruments. Then I had a Quest 2 and the sweet spot was too small. Brother has a Reverb G2 and won't play without it. I'll likely go that route unless there is something better and affordable then.

 Hi Animl,

welcome to the forum, just a reminder to have a read of our forum rules, we do not allow discussion of other games here. Please keep it DCS related.

Best regards

I bet training to connect to that hose must have been exciting. I tried my first time in DCS with the F18 and realized it was quite a bit more challenging than I realized to connect and stay connected.

No VR yet. Just track IR for now in DCS.

They say that stuff is a lot easier in VR with the depth perception.

They say VR is best for helo for that reason, but I haven't started using my Quest 2. If I was flying fixed-wing I would, but I don't think its enough difference in helo to wear that heavy clunk if I don't have to.

The first AR is a bit imposing when that boom comes straight to the windshield and then flies around the canopy.  Tough to fight every survival instinct to break left and away, instead of just maintaining a stable platform for the boomer to plug in to.

Then, there’s doing it on a pitch dark night, in the weather……….🌫️🌧️⛈️☁️🌫️☁️

The free Blackhawk mod is well done. I neglected to reduce my fuel loadout and so had a full tank when I hooked up.

Absolutely!  My very first hour in the Phantom was beyond frustrating getting use to the “all flying stabilator”.  Started with moderate PIOs and then sort of settled down to minor, but irritating small ones, with time.  Felt sorry for my IP in the back seat but, they must have expected it as a normal part of the FNG Phantom Phlyer.  In the previous DCS videos, the PIOs are reminiscent of that first Phantom flight.  The computer lag doesn’t help tame the PIOs much at all.  But, it’s doable.

You’re quite welcome.  I’m interested in trying it out when released.  Good memory jogger.

as for VR in DCS - it's a huge disadvantage in terms of spotting and retaining tally. People on trackir see things i can only dream of.
G2 OpenXR, configured and all that. I hope maybe nextgen set will address this somewhat. Generally on WWII services spoting anything below horizon is next to impossible.

Glad to see it's just not me..

Even above the horizon a con is a smeared black dot a ways out that actually becomes harder to see as it gets closer ...

It's a purty game though and works for jets, radar and missiles..just not ww2 planes

Will wait until the Navalized (B/J/N/S) versions are released. Until then I will continue to read the BBS/O' Club purse fights.
