Is it just me or was the P51D reworked to slow speeds?
It's been about 10 years since I've played aces and it seems to me that the p51 has slower speed now. Darned if I should've left that LA7 behind after 5 mins of tailing me.

Close to zero planes can catch a 51D under most circumstances; a handful can keep pace. Unless something changed in the last few days.

What alt?
La7 is fast at low alt.

All the ones I end up chasing sure seem fast enough.

LOL...tell that to YAK3's, 109K4's, 190D's, 152s, Spitfire XIV & XVI, Tempests, F4U1A's and P47M's especially at high alt.
-
P51 is very fast but feels sluggish when gaining alt and need to be patient regaining alt. Don't want to enter the fight mid alt or low generally. Never want to be under 5k unless going 450+. A few planes can catch the P51 on the deck and a few planes can dive and catch you if higher so you definitely have to be aware.

the P51 is great at retaining energy, not so good at gaining it back especially on the deck any weight shedding you can do greatly helps it.
Try running the P51D with 4 guns and 25% fuel with drop tanks. Ditch the drop tanks when getting into combat, run down the left wing tank first and you have the right wing tank to get you home, also this helps balance the torque from the engine at the top of loops and other low speed situations.

I returned not too long ago and had that same thought with the 51D after not being able to run down a 51B with a speed disadvantag but the B was a few K above. I chatted a bit with the B pilot in private because it did not make sense in my mind at the time, turns out at different alts it is possible. I confirmed it on the AH plane Wiki (google it if you have not seen the site). Definitely a good source to check out

Speed comparison made easy in here. (https://www.hitechcreations.com/component/ahplaneperf/?Itemid=139)

I use the charts but planes are different in how long it takes at level alt to build up to the top speed. Using the chart u would think your gonna be faster but it all depends on how long it takes to build the speed up. The climb chart is the same way some planes climb faster and retain their E better.

I did not know this existed.

I’m not great at interpreting these charts always. Can I get a quick cliff notes on what we are looking at in the comparison?

Acceleration and speed are two different things. Ponies don't have the greatest acceleration, but once you get them going they go real fast. TryHard eluded to it in his earlier post.
If you get a pony slow, and are trying to accelerate away from a LA-7 that's probably not going to work so well for the pony but falls right into the strength of the LA, especially if you are below 10K. Where the LA has the advantage in both climb and top speed.

That an LA-7 can catch a pony on the deck easily if he has WEP.

Ok got I see the correlation thank you all.
