Title: Master of the Air miniseries, 8th AF action, and the next Scenario
Post by: Brooke on November 20, 2023, 06:33:38 PM
Masters of the Air miniseries is coming soon.
It is a Band of Brothers style miniseries -- but about WWII air combat.
Specifically, it is based on the book Masters of the Air, and focuses on the 8th AF and 100th BG throughout the war.
Masters of the Air will run from late Jan through mid March.
To celebrate this series, the next Scenario will run starting in February-ish or March-ish, and will focus on that action. 8th AF strategic bombing with the 100th BG, allied escorts/sweeps, axis interceptors.
It will be grand. It will be dramatic. It will be spectacular. It will be fun.
I'm letting folks know now so that they know it's coming.
I will give more details as we nail down the exact dates.

AWESOME!! Would be great to get some ad on HTC home page well in advance. Great idea to tie it to an up coming movie.

Now this I cannot miss :old:
I still have glorious flash backs from the target for today scenario back in 2015
12 hrs long and as real as it got for Acss High 2. Nothing has topped that last return flight to England after bombing German positions in Paris. That beautiful night sky and full moon over the channel in a formation of 11 sets of B17s and a handful of escorts remaining! Those were the days

Without thinking of the movie, and not knowing you were posting this, I was DLing this for clips. Telepathy.

Target for Today was an unbelievable day, and a fantastic design.
Still think about if we(Luftwaffe) was just a tad bit more organized on the last bomber run. We just turned about 1-2 minutes too early into the bomber stream and came in at 9 o'clock, if we just stayed on course and set up a 12 o'clock engagement. We might've done enough damage. Missed chances.
We could've won it. We were outnumbered all day, and found a way. Literally came down to the last hour.

No sir,
It came down to the last 5 minutes. I was in a FW190D chasing the formation of B-17 watching the clock. The allies dropped with on five minutes left.
You are right though, we could have won it. As the CIC on that one, I made a critical mistake, for the sake of fun, to chase RTB bombers that let a big group hit Antwerp. But even with that mistake, we could have still won it if we just had fighters left at the end.
That one and the BOB scenario where ROC would zoom out to you using CM EYE to verify you in the water and a friendly PT close to save a life! That scenario was EPIC

Concept sounds great, but it's hard to make a good series like BoB and production backing.
Hopeful, around every corner is a great new movie with a great production.

We are going to run the upcoming Masters of the Air scenario February 3, 10, 17, 24, and March 2. It will be a 5-frame scenario
Because --
It is going to be themed on the 100th BG missions from 1944 to 1945 and represent planes across that span. 109G-6's groups will eventually be flying 109K's, and so on.
We will post a draft of the setup soon.
Registration will open this upcoming Sunday night.
If you are a player who wants to CO a side, contact me.

It really is. Every player in the game should be a part of this one. The concept and series is the core reason we are here. Other sim players would want to. I’m going to block off days of work to be in it. ;)

This will be a great event! Needs to be marketed as such. The forums ain't enough, as only less than 10% of the players actually come here. Need to have a post of the front page of AH. Need to see if we can get something on Steam. Need to post in other gaming forums. Need to post in other Sim forums. Email your friends who use to play. Need to have a MOTD starting in February. Post on Reddit, FB, X, gab, truth social, ect.
This will all do wonders to attract more gamers to the event and to AH. :old:
I'm thrilled and will hopefully be able to fly most weekends [hopefully].

All sounds fun I will mention it wherever I can. Lots of active flight sim sub Reddit’s I can blast it on but it’s hard without somewhere to point everyone. Is there a page or anything for this we can link?

If this attracted new players are they allowed to participate in the FSO’s and scenarios during the free trial period?
Would be an important distinction to clarify.

Cool video.
Looks like Ahevents.net also has a certificate issue. I’m ready to blast it out but a bit leery of people getting the certificate block if they come see. Might be best to wait until that’s all squared away.

Players, please spread the word on this.
Most players don't read the message board.
So we need YOU folks to tell folks in game about it.
I will start blasting it out on my lunch break tomorrow
A free trial player can fly in any arena and any event. However, in FSO they must fly with a registered squadron. Most squads these days will take any such pilot up under their wing on the night, so nothing to worry about.

A couple things to maybe correct - "continuing on Saturdays through...", and isn't really centered around Big Week as that was in Feb 44 - this is more so the bombing campaign in late 44 leading to the end of the war. No particular name for it I don't think, just don't want people to get the wrong idea of planeset timeframe.

Noted for future thank you. I made sure to put the B17 in the post because I’ve learned that IL2 players are pissed they have no four engine bombers to fly lol. Apparently it was not possible with whatever physics engines they use or something like that… but they are closing in on it for the coming years.

DCS doesn't have any either, and a lot have clamored for a playable B-17 for years, so that would be an important differentiator to identify to all the DCS folks on Hoggit. Plays off a know pain point.
I think HT should create a special MotA 1 month trial period bookended around the event. Open the event up to trial players as a special case. You won't often ever see WWII aviation moive tie-in possibility to a lot of people watching and getting the itch. You might not see another one in AH's life span. I wouldn't waste this once in a decade opportunity with half measures. Especially if you have a flyable B17\multi-crew and the other competitors don't.
Carpe Diem.

Reddit's r\Hoggit is a DCS centric, but not limited forum.
It is THE venue for combat flight sims discussion. If you don't post there, You're missing your potential target audience.
There are BMS, IL2, WT pilots there too.
[Edit] If it were me, I'd do an additional vid really playing up the internal view of combat from inside the B-17. Highlights an advantage AH has that the other sims catch currently match.
Cockpit, clipboard navigation, gunner positions, bombardier station. All the things bomber fan's can't get in IL2 or DCS currently.
Like this. ;)

The online flight sim community is pretty niche, small and it's shrinking. This cross pollination and cross promotion stuff does nothing but help grow the community in my opinion. Highlighting and promoting other games' strengths and weaknesses shed light on your own as well. Seeing and discussing what's over the fence in the neighbors yard might show you what you need to improve in your own backyard. I'm back to looking at all this stuff and it's great. I can't wait to get back to AH gameplay and I'm looking forward to some of those cool missions and the like over at IL-2 too. Not sure what the other sim mentioned is, but color me intrigued. Intrigue plays a big part in keeping this niche world going and growing. Keep up the intrigue, I say. In the meanwhile, I'm gonna practice as I'm absolutely looking forward to this scenario. It's great to see the enthusiasm for it...reminds me of the old days.
I looked over my backyard fence over the summer while trimming a tree. I almost saw boobies. I also almost fell off the ladder too. That was intriguing.

The post on the IL2 forum has 118 views in under a day so not too shabby. And old Air Warrior player replied that he is going to come check it out. I told him to stop in here and he may be surprised who is still around lol. His IL name was Kestral79 not sure if it was the same in AW.

1) only said by players who play different games.
2) on other games its either segregated or not allowed at all.
3) when its only done forum wide in one game it puts it behind the 8ball.
4) IF it were equal I might agree, but its not. Its unleashed here, so I don’t agree.
It doesn’t hurt the other games. Obviously I’m not alone, base because 1, pretty planes, agrees with me. Its not s single person concept. Killing a game does not preserve the niche.

I know that some might find this shocking but some of us are actually promoting AH3 in the IL2 forums and nobody is complaining about it:

Not sure if there any Aces High players in here but there is a new scenario starting on 2/3/24 and continuing on Saturdays through 3/2/24.
To coincide with the new Masters of the Air tv show premier this scenario will focus on a Big Week style time frame of the European campaigns. Not an exact redo but there will be bombers to fly and shoot.
Aces High is free to try and always free offline. There are over 120 WWII Planes and vehicles to use. No credit card is needed for your free trial and during you will get two week access to all multiplayer arenas.
Scenario planes to include the B17 and varying models of P51’s, P47’s, BF109’s and FW190’s.
Registration begins on 1/7/24. More info to come and can be found at the AH Special Events site.
Aces High Special Events
There is also a teaser video on YouTube.
All are welcome!

Sounds like fun!
If you plan to fly it you might want to download it and get your stuff setup before the even or you might find yourself fumbling around.
You could always be a gunner though. I don't think you even need a joystick for that if I recall correctly.

No joystick required but it is very highly recommended. All planes, vehicles, and guns are controllable by mouse and keyboard.
AH3 also is friendly to VR.
Always a good idea to get settings squared away and make yourself comfortable offline first.

How is this compared to Warthunder, IL2, and DCS? I played Air Warrior back in the day and I think this is the spiritual successor right? I always liked the larger number of players online in one game, and the ability to capture bases was fun too. Great gameplay. But I'm dating myself and talking AOL in 1997 here :)
How much does it cost a month to play after the trial? Like

Come on back! There are no shortage of the old Air Warrior vets in Aces High lol!
You pretty much described it as it is today. AH has a lot of unique things that those others do not. Player numbers aren’t like the old days but getting about 130 in prime time and more for the scenarios and FSO’s. It’s 14.99 a month after the trial.
No charge to download and start flying offline if you want to get familiar again. You can wait a bit and sign up for the account closer the scenario if you want to try it during the two week trial. Edited 3 hours ago by Dadtallica Like

Cool maybe I'll check it out for Big Week. I actually remember Air Warrior III doing that in the late 90's. How's VR work compared to IL2? Like

I do not use VR since I have a 55” screen but from all accounts it’s a game changer and AH handles it very well.
You should pop in the AH forum ahead of time you will for sure find some old AW friends. In fact a few days ago people were looking up old Air Warrior stats lol. What was your AW call sign?
There is also a section solely for VR if you have specific questions. AH BBS Edited 2 hours ago by Dadtallica Like

What site has the old AW stats? I'll have to check that out. I was in 7th or 8th grade, I was probably terrible. <f16> or <f-16> something like that. I flew with a squadron too, but the name of the squad escapes me. I remember our CO's name was Chunks, or Chnks something like that. And the best pilot in our squad was Dark9. Maybe the Warhawks, Warhammers, something like that. Idk.
I would get up early before school at like 6am and fly a B-17 below radar and bomb all the factories for mega points while only a handful of other people were playing online. Also have fond memories of being a gunner on a fully crewed B-17, and we came across another B-17 and got in an epic dogfight of bombers. Great times. Back when you had unlimited free time to play games. Like

I am not sure where they got them but I will post this screenshot in the forum and see what happens. AH is still full of old AW pilots. Like

It’s weird that nobody in the IL2 forum has sent me any hate filled pm’s after 140 views. Already looks like we have a couple people interested too. I’m going to start Reddit subs this weekend.
r/flightsim and r/microsoftflightsim have weekly self promo threads for whatever you want. The Microsoft sub has 140k members and is the #14 sub for all simulation games. Hoping to get some good traction out of that one.

Does any of this ring a bell for the old AW crew? I came along after that time.

There was a Kestrel way back when. I think they named a field after him at one point in AW, so perhaps.

I guess you have to search for it specifically to find anything about it. I forgot it was just on Apple TV. That would probably be why there is no advertising.

I was looking at writers for Masters of the Air series.
John Orloff wrote a lot of the episodes. He's they guy who wrote episode 2 of Band of Brothers, the "Day of Days" episode. Woot! :aok

Oh, no!
Why not? We've got 190A-8's (for a couple of frames) and 190D's for all frames. Also, it's 5 frames worth, from Feb 3 to March 2, so maybe some frame days work out?

Slightly off topic but this is a pretty good interview with Donald Miller about getting Masters of the Air to screen: https://www.lehighvalleynews.com/local-news/transcript-lafayette-college-professor-and-historian-donald-l-miller-talks-masters-of-the-air

Encouraging:
"But each of these missions we bring forward is a chapter and it’s unique. It’s absolutely unique. We don’t try to make anything up.
"‘Fidelity’ was our guide word. Everybody in the plane had a real name and was a real human being. There are no made-up characters or composite characters. These are guys who lived and breathed and walked the Earth."

Unearthed an old player in the IL2 forum thread. Anyone remember?
“I remember AH fondly, a lot of time logged back in the days :) The scenarios and events were the best experiences as a lot of pilots took part in them. Servers were packed and ping/playability very good even for EU players like me. Used to fly with name DB603 years back. Good to see AH is still alive :)”
