Looks awesome, also looks like the Tuskegee Airmen will get some episodes according to what I've read.

And here I thought this was going to be about the Mighty Eighth, weird...

Yeah, the Tuskegee Airmen reference throws me a bit when the series is supposed to be based on the book, "Masters of the Air", which I believe is strictly about the 8th AF's ETO bombing campaign.

I'm still hoping for the best; I'm hoping for such success it spawns another Band of Brothers type historically accurate, gritty story based on the Flying Tigers in China.  I'm hoping it generates renewed wide-spread interest in WWII flight sims.  (Aces High being the only one where you can fly a B-17 or B-24 in a multiplayer environment).

They have to fit our civics lesson into it somewhere...

Hollywood can't help themselves these days

Wondering how they are going to get a chick into it as the hero...

Spikes and I looked into it after the first trailer came out.

The 100th BG went to Ukraine as part of one of the Operation Frantic shuttle bombing missions. On their return trip, they went to Italy and did a couple of missions with the 15th AF. So it's possible that they did encounter the pilots in the 332nd FG. I haven't read the book, but I figure there's some mention in there if it occurred.

I guess there is some legitimate concern that the greatest film producers in our lifetimes might honor the Tuskegee Airmen better than the stinkburger that was "Redtails" or the 1995 Made for TV movie "The Tuskegee Airmen"

I hope you didn't get that impression from my post, Nefarious.  The Tuskegee Airmen deserve our unbounded admiration and gratitude for what they accomplished and what they put up with; theirs is a remarkable record of achievement.  I'm just hoping for tight historical accuracy, authentic dialogue for the period, a compelling story and great music and effects.  If it doesn't turn out that way, I'll be disappointed, but not upset.   If it gets close to the quality of Band of Brothers, it'll still be great.

Hollywood being a business, I suppose the do have to make sure its appealing to many different audiences, so it makes money.

Thank you Devil, for pointing out the possibility of an accurate story of the Mighty 8th that includes missions with the Tuskegee Airmen.  I have the book so I better get it back on my nightstand.

lol no, just some sarcasm.

I hypothesized the theory of the 100th BG-Tuskegee "crossover" in the first trailer post by Capt Trips. I don't have a problem with it at all and yes, if the producers can reach more people and inspire one more little boy to become an aviation
history enthusiast I will be pleased.

I might even go as far and say that maybe the two pilots cross paths in the prison camp they show in the trailer. Or maybe it's a small interlude between stories.

I don't care. Looking forward to January.

The Tuskegee Airmen are not in Masters of the Air (the book) as far as I can tell.  The book is basically about the 8th AF.

I don't mind if the series occasionally jumps over to cover the Tuskegee Airmen as a separate plot.  However, I'm hoping that they don't go full Hollywood, mixing the 8th AF and Tuskegee Airmen into a non-historical mess that fails both 8th AF history and Tuskegee Airmen history.  I'll keep an open mind.

Overall, I'm greatly looking forward to it.

^This, exactly.   We'll just have to wait and see; as Devil and Spikes discovered its historically plausible that the two groups crossed paths.

I wouldn't hold your breath that they are NOT going to go full hollywood. The opening scenes of this trailer were of the obligatory love interest. I am just wondering if they are going to rewrite "history" in a woke manner as well with the also obligatory trans person(s).

My guess is that it will be a concurrent\parallel story line like they did in Pacific.

It may not have been have been in the book, but no law says they can't expand the storylines as an example of other Masters of the Air.

There were some historical tweaks and misses in Band of Brothers too.  I can live with a little massaging as long as they don't jump the shark.

Meh.  My beef, if any, were the other attempts were crap.  I'd love to see a serious, nuanced depiction of the Redtails.

Band of Brothers is still the standard.  If they could produce a BoB level depiction of the the Redtails story, I would watch it in a heartbeat.  If it's good.  If it's bad, it doesn't matter what color the skin of the pilot is.

I'd love to see a BoB level anthology of the 442nd Infantry Regimental Combat Team, too.  Those are legitimate stories.  Those soldiers really went through that bias.  There is no point looking away.  It just need a better treatment than easy two-dimensional made-for-television cut-out cartoon characters.

Anyone been watching?

got up to episode 3 and I'm loving it. But especially because I have skin in the game. The dropzone where i work as a cameraman filmed a whole bunch of the bail out stunts, our camera man Paulo filmed over 50% of the shots in the final cuts and Mikey the other 50%. Was a lot of fun working on the airfield during the project. Seeing the stuntmen all dressed up in sheepskins and mae wests, chucking out round canopies after simulating a bailout from our jump plane. The scene in episode 3 where the young crewman cannot help is friend babyface out of the ball turret I can picture our Pac in place of the B17.

Cool series, they've done it real justice and the CGI is so beautiful.

The third episode was better.  Understandably they had to spend first two setting up the characters and situation.  World-building in writers speak.

Now they can start the story proper.

While there are probably not enough of the vets left to bookend the episodes with interviews, they could have used historians like Ken Burns' Civil War series.

If the rest is as good or better than ep. 3 (though not perfect)  then I will be happy.

Sweet that you got to work on it!

I am liking the series a lot.  I think they are doing a great job.

I wish you could join us in the Masters of the Air scenario that is running Saturdays.  But the time in the UK would be quite difficult, starting at Sunday, 1 am London time.

Would love to Brooke, many happy memories of the events here. Unfortunately now with a family and pushing on in years myself, I think my days of staying up until dawn playing games are now few and far between.  :old:

Turn 40 next month, started AH at 17. When I started flying it seemed most were in there 30 or 40s. I have really been contemplating getting Apple TV just to watch this series. From the trailer and youtube clips it looks like a worth wild watch.

Why did they not take the 100th documentary and put cutups in the series, similar to BOB. Would've set up the series so much better.

It was OK.  Uneven.  It took so long to make, it could have never lived up to the hype.
It could have been better.
It could have been worse.

It didn't suck.

I originally posted this in the MOTA scenario general, but probably better here:

I read the MOTA book twice, last time being close to 10 years ago. Based on my memory of it, I was surprised that it seemed to follow other sources pretty heavily like Crosby’s A Wing and a Prayer. Felt like a lot of MOTA was left undeveloped, like the political challenges and the strategic choices made by the likes of Eaker, Arnold and Doolittle. They should have used a different title to the series more in line with the focus on the 100th BG instead of the broader 8th AAF that the book MOTA really develops.

I have been eager to see this since they first announced it over a decade ago. While not as good as Band of Brothers, I could definitely re-watch it more times than the Pacific (which I have only seen three times as compared to like 12-15 times for BoB). I did not have any problem with the CGI. It will take another to really get to know the many faces and be able to better link characters off-mission with their faces unobscured as compared to when they are flying with oxygen masks. I don’t know, the Schweinfurt-Regensburg mission was depicted a bit more muted than what I expected it to be - like the results were on target, balanced out the losses, and didn’t setback the 8ths strength as much.

My first introduction to AH was flying with the 100th BG. Miss you guys - Irish, Hooch, Malak, Chewi, Coogan, Bull and all the others <S> 100
