Title: Embroidered patch to commemorate glorious battles in Mastes of the Air scenario
Post by: Brooke on January 20, 2024, 03:02:23 PM
In days long ago, for scenarios seen now through the mists of time, we once created embroidered patches for each one.

To commemorate the fire and valor of our scenario pilots.

To commemorate our glorious battles, long remembered.

To bring to thought, in conversations with beloved comrades and noble foes of the past:  "I was there."

We will make patches once again for Masters of the Air.

To do this, we ask players to make designs.  And we ask players to vote and to pick which they like best from among those candidates.

Then I get them made, mail them out to all scenario participants who want one, and ask for donations to defray cost.  I will do this again.

Here, my friends, are examples of patches from those days gone by, to inspire your creations.

Players, please here submit your suggestions for patches.

Suggestions are graphical mock ups you make, so that folks can see what you have in mind.

I had thought about patches but knowing all the work you’ve been putting into this I didn’t want to add to it. I’ll throw a $20 in the fund raising bin.

This is very cool Brooke!

I can't contribute anything as I don't have any creativity whatsoever. I will gladly contribute monetarily however.

I guess I could draw up something but I think stick figures and airplanes drawn with the skill of an average 4th-grader wouldn't make the cut. I've seen some of these other dudes in here do some cool stuff though.

Excellent idea Brooke.

To save time, an AI art generator with the right keywords might just make a nice patch.
Here are some INCORRECT SAMPLES to show what can be down in 15 seconds.

I've tried some AI graphics programs.

The problem I run into is that the ones I use don't do well on more-precise descriptions, especially including things like aircraft.

This design may have too many elements, or too much detail.  Designing a patch is harder than it looks.   I may be back with an alternate, simpler design.    Those previous patches were very cool-looking, esp Der Grosse Schlag and the Red Storm-Kruppes Steel.

Brooke who do you use to create the patches?  It might help to look at their website for design guidelines?

They don't really have guidelines that tell you much.

What you do is use some judgement, make a graphic, send it in, they render it into what it will approximately look like in stitching, you iterate that until you are happy, then you pull the trigger on a patch run.

This one is superb to be honest. Not sure how easy it is to edit - but perhaps for the Luftwaffe just have the traditional WWII Balkenkreuz (https://cdn11.bigcommerce.com/s-nf66r1574l/images/stencil/2048x2048/products/221/721/IN-23__80897.1579715806.png?c=2) ? Maybe February on the left vert side and 2024 on the right vert side? Just spitballing.

Oboe, for the two you did, likely the words will end up having the equivalent of bigger fonts, and the outside border would be thicker.  If you look at the pictures of the patches above, check out how big various words are with respect to the patch to see what I mean.

Patches are 3" diameter.

Folks, let's pick which of these three you guys like the best so far.

That way, the creator can focus on that in making tweaks to convert it to something that would work as a patch.

Thanks Spikes, I can make that change, and put the design up as an alternate choice.   I'll also incorporate Brooke's suggestion of a wider outline band with a larger font.

I really thought more people would be submitting designs.   Seems like we should have a larger field to pick from.

I think 'A' is an interesting design because the Luftwaffe and 8th AF symbols interfere with each other, visually suggesting a clash.
But not sure how the embroider machine would handle the overlapping wings.   But its a cool idea.

Here's a variation of B, based on Spikes recommendation to swap the Balkan Cross in for the Luftwaffe Eagle.  I also tried to take into account Brookes thoughts about the wider outer band and larger lettering:

The wider outer bands and lettering can be done for the other two sample patches also...

FYI, Balkenkreuz (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkenkreuz#:~:text=The%20Balkenkreuz%20(%20lit.,end%20of%20World%20War%20II.) translates as 'beam cross' or 'bar cross', not Balkan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balkan_Mountains).

Title: Question for Brooke
Post by: oboe on January 28, 2024, 08:13:17 AM
Do all the patch designs have to be circular?   I've been looking at patches for ideas, and there are a number of different shapes - shields, ovals, rounded rectangles, inverted triangles, etc - are we limited to a strictly circular design?

Also, what about a circular patch with additional text sections above and/or below the circle, as below:

Does the patch maker allow different patch shapes?

I don't think circular is necessarily required:

Brooke who do you use to create the patches?  It might help to look at their website for design guidelines?

After staring at these. What about keeping the eagle and iron cross but with the design changes you have in the second rendition? So Smaller orange ring, February and 2024 moved to the outside, etc. I thought the Balkenkreuz would make it less 'busy', but the Luftwaffe eagle seems to blend better and having the month/year moved away helps with the busyness.

To be honest, if we want to save text space we can omit "February". It seems like more often than not the previous patches had them, but we also only run 1-2 a year now so it's a bit less important.

So top could be:
Masters of the Air

Bottom:
Aces High Scenario 2024

I second this. I like C but I feel the patch should represent both sides.

My vote would be B with the modifications Spikes mentions. Second choice would be the modified version Oboe has already made.

Appreciate all the effort going in to this. Regardless of which design is selected, I will definitely be buying one.

I like B the best with the Eagle, though curious how it would look with the silver B17 instead of the silhouette.

The winged star with red circle in the center on a blue background was the US AAF emblem.   Flying Tigers may have used it, but I doubt it.  But they were taken over by the USAAF in mid-1942 I believe, and became the core of the 23rd FG...

They used it several times. Thanks, you confirmed my thoughts.

No prob.  When I think of Flying Tigers emblem, I only get the Disney-like tiger with little wings, sometime I think he's jumping through a hoop or the Chinese AF symbol?

Yep, thats original character. It morphed into or from a meaner version.. I didn’t research on  dates of versions. But the one you mention is widely used.

Sorry didn’t mean to hijack thread.

Here's F. with a smaller Balken Cross, and a larger B-17 side view.  Trying after all to make it look like the elements want to burst out of the patch.

Liking much better with the smaller cross.

Combatants/ Globe

This one is also really nice.

The Krupp Stahl eagle sure adds interest. But the cartoon font is even more in striking contrast with the otherwise serious theme.

Pardon my ignorance but what is the story behind the yellow winged snowman?

Winged snowman was the insignia of the 8th AAF, the winged star was adopted 1942 for all AAF everywhere. Every one likes a bad bellybutton flying star.

Oh, so it is a snowman! But yellow? I have been taught not to eat yellow snow... Anyhoo, thanks for explaining. To me it looked like a winged snowman hiding behind Captain America's shield. Not too far from the actual thing.

Anybody else working on a patch design?   Just curious, does anybody know who designed the earlier patches?

I asked Brooke about it when he first mentioned it...he said:
Nefarious, Blauk, 96Delta, Krusty, DoK, Fencer, Kermit, SilverFox, Guppy35

I like F but it would depend if Brooke thinks there's too much detail with the B-17 profile, if so then E.

OK!

Masters of the Air scenario has concluded, then I and my family all got a bunch of nasty flu/pneumonia/sinus infections, and now back on the mend and back to business!

Time for me to get this patch process across the finish line.  :aok

F. seems to be the most popular:

It has more detail than can get rendered into a patch.  But the rendering artist at the company will take that as inspiration and then give back something that meets the manufacturing criteria.  Once I get that, I'll post it here and see what people think.  We can always pick a simpler design if we don't like it at that stage.

Patches from old seemed to he 3” ers, is that about right?
Could we get a slightly larger patch to help the detail level while still having it a realistic size?
And equally important where do we contribute to the patch fund???

To get a patch:

1.  Send a message using this message board to Popsman.
2.  Say "patch" in the subject.
3.  Tell him your name and mailing address.

Well done, heroic scenario pilots of Masters of the Air!  :aok

Please spread the word.  Tell all your fellow Masters of the Air pilots that patches are available.  In case they don't read the message board.

I do have one minor problem with this.
Popsman wont accept a contribution.  I think I have a work-around though :devil

They look just as good as the event was!!!  I still haven’t finished watching the series as I sort of lost interest in watching while flying the scenario.

Worst case, I can link my paypal and send the final sum to you or Popsman. :salute

I am doing messages to all registered pilots, as well.

Folks who already requested their patch can disregard.  Just want to make sure as many of the pilots as possible know to request one if they want one.
