Title: Antonius Wöffen's Bf 109G-10
Post by: Devil 505 on January 23, 2024, 10:47:29 PM
Bf 109G-10 (AH K-4) flown by Antonius Wöffen, C.O. of 6./Jg 27 on March 11, 1945. On that day, Wöffen was shot down by ground fire shortly after downing an American artillery spotter over the Wesel-Rheinberg-Duisberg bridgehead, one of final German held territories on the west bank of the Rhine. Because his engine was losing power quickly, Wöffen decided to strafe American ground troops and then ditch his aircraft. Despite being shot at and belly landing quite hard, Wöffen escaped his 109 unharmed and was quickly taken prisoner by troops of the 5th Armored Division. He plane was photographed by those troops as well.

Wöffen's aircraft was an Erla built G-10 painted in RLM 82 Green and RLM 75 camouflage over RLM 76 light blue. A green tail band identifies this as a Jg 27 machine. A yellow "24" covers a previous "5" and a yellow horizontal bar of II Gruppe partially overlaps the tail band.
