Title: Heinrich Bartels' "Red 13"
Post by: Devil 505 on May 02, 2024, 08:21:32 PM
This skin is an adoption of Fencer's original skin.

Bf 109G-6 flown by Heinrich Bartels in November 1943. Bartels, a 49 kill ace with JG 5 in northern Russia, was posted to 11./JG 27 at Athens, Greece in August 1943. By November 17, he had added 21 more to reach 70 and was awarded the Knight's Cross. This aircraft was photographed with 70 kill marks and a Knight's Cross medal in a laurel on the rudder. The rudder itself was painted white to mark it as being flown by a flight leader. A white tail band served as a Mediterranean Theater IFF marking. Red side numbers and a wavy Gruppe bar are used by 11 Staffel. Fencer's skin had double horizontal bars, which were used for a very short time when the in the summer of 1943, but all photos of Bartels' plane show it with the wavy bar, including the one with the 70 kill marks.

Shortly after he scored his 70th, IV/JG 27 was transferred to Austria to bolster defense against American bombers. Bartels would score another 29 victories in 1944 before being shot down and killed on Dec. 23. His 109G-10, with Bartels' body still in the cockpit, was only discovered in 1968 near Bad Godesberg, Germany.

Stunning work, Devil505.  Interesting camo pattern on the wing tops.
