Title: Bad Me and Ocean
Post by: -gg- on May 20, 2024, 12:53:32 AM
we  have two new songs out

We do everything ourselves - music, recording, mixing and mastering, etc.

Ocean is a rocker. Grunge - Soundgarden kind of sound

Bad Me is I guess a pop Rock song. A little dark. I think it has a good story.

Bad Me- you guys sure have the consistent sound down. A lil more dynamics than normal grunge.

Keep pounding at it. Bring rock back to life.

Ocean - I think the chorus is good. I just feel like it's missing something. It seems like everything is built around the chorus.I think it needs a bass. Like i want to get into the groove but i cant until the chorus.

Bad me - good concept. Still feel like it's missing a bass. I wouldn't consider it a single. It just needs a bit more. Definitely a good filler song on an album.

Definitely think yall need a bass to reel in the groove and flow.  That's what I feel is missing, but the concepts are good.

I go by, could I plug this in and start listening with some friends and get to partying. or Could I listen to it alone and play it while I'm playing Video games. To me, I just feel like it needs some bass and a little more twang to fill out the sound more.

I did enjoy the music videos for the most part.

thanks, Animal!

DmonSlyr - by bass do you mean subbase? They do have bass on them and the range goes into the sub bass range. They're professional mastered with very hi-end, analog gear and made to conform to current standards

But anything could have more bass. We just balance them so they sound good on almost anything

Huh... plenty of bass at my end.  These are world-class recordings and great songs that could sit next to anything on any playlist.

Very nice Gina!

Alright. Well I don't really know anything about music, just that I'm great I'm at listening to it. Much like I don't know much about preparing food, but that I'm great at eating it and know what's good.

So.... Here is a song that has a similar tempo to Oceans... in some regards, can you see perhaps where I'm coming from by listening to this song compared to Oceans? There is a "filling" that I feel Oceans is missing. Btw, I do really like the chorus, but it's the non chorus that I feel is missing flow.

I listened to that last night. I was going to put that on an analyzer and post some pictures of a graph and see what it looks like compared to OCEAN, but I didn't have time. I'll do that in a day or so. Should be interesting
hat
But I'll tell you what I heard in that song you posted that's different.

I'm hear a lot more of a squashed sound. What I mean by that, the mastering is pushing the volume louder and in doing that, the limiter is squishing the sound more. That's a sound I don't care for - but it's a more "modern" sound, I guess.

Modern songs have less dynamic range a lot of times because that's the trade off for going louder.

I think people get used to that kind of sound and expect it, but it's not a good sound in my opinion.

But that's just it. It's only opinion and taste. People like what they like.

That kind of thing will sound louder on earbuds and smaller speakers.

I'm no studio guy, I'm live sound, my job is to duplicate what they hear on the album, so take anything I say with a grain of salt.

What I am missing is either vocal structure, OR leave that be and add background FX/Fillers. The chorus fine, the mix is fine, the bass is fine, let those ride. Build around it. The chorus break seems to be your hook. Leave it.

What I mean by FX is the air needs filing. Could be very simple subtle percussion instrument rythem, keyboard FX....I guess what I'm say is, it's a little dry. The way it's structure it would take very little at low volume to fill that void. It would be something way in the background, but it need it's own hook.  That one little subtle thing can really widen it out. The chorus is already balls out, so you have room to on rest. Pink Floyd was seriously magical with that stuff....but there are also other approaches. If we removed the back ground FX from PF songs it would be dry as a bone. They take something very simple and bring it to life....and that my friend is an art. That will separate you and bring you out front with those hooks.

You wouldn't need to change what you have, just add and build around anything before the chorus.

This is just a mere example off the top of my head. Just listen to the fillers. No dead air

More exaggerated with layers,.. listen deep.

Huh...  I don't think you could be further from the truth.  The space between the notes is just as important as the notes.  This music lives and breathes.  Furthermore, I think you're confused thinking Gina shared her music looking for technical feedback.  She and the other members of The Jetglows have been producing music professionally for a very long time, I'm sure it's turned out exactly how they wanted.

Yeah it's not like we're going to change these songs since they're already mixed, mastered and released.

I just wanted to share them here.

Thanks for listening!

I'm just giving my 100% honest critical opinion on the songs like anyone else would. I don't expect the songs to change or anything. The chorus of Ocean actually got stuck in my head for a while which is a really great thing for a band. It's a great chorus. It's just the inbetween parts are missing atmosphere or something, to me... maybe it's just the device I'm listening on that isn't capturing all of the sounds or something.

IMO, you’re on the right path. Some good hooks, that matters.
