I'm posting about interesting new developments in the Combat Flight Sim market space.  No one is forced to read.

When I see stuff in DCS, I talk about it.  That is what I have the best\recent info on.

I listen with interest to the guys talking about IL2 because I don't know anything about it and am interested in their insights from personal experience.

Is there some new development in Aces High you would like to talk about?  Go right ahead.  I got my coffee, start when you're ready...

My Dad was in Korea during the war. I was TDY to Kunsan for the first Team Spirit in the mid 70's and spent a year at Osan in the early 90's. I may not play it much but I'll buy IL2 Korea for sure.

I think it is stupid they use "IL2".  Too limiting.  They didn't use IL-2 in Korea did they? IL2: Pacific?  What if they want to extend to modern?  IL-2: Yom Kippur War?  What does that even mean? Confusing branding.

Compared to something like Combat Pilot.  Easy to have "Combat Pilot: WWI" and "Combat Pilot: Korea"  or "Combat Pilot: Battle of Britain"  The franchise brand is better positioned and not strangely constrained or incongruent.  IMHO.

They should have taken this opportunity to rebrand the franchise to Great Air Battles, IMHO.  Start fresh better positioned to move forward.

I'd like to see them do Vietnam but as the real life technology advanced so must the simulation. Much more involved to simulate jets with radar and missile systems than piston planes shooting bullets.

And in a space with a dominant player who has already "mostly" mastered that.
Tough place to pick to compete.

Why they would abandon the WWII genre that they had dominance in, boggles my mind. Plenty they could still do there.  They had it cornered.

I wish them luck, and am certain to try it out, but I can't help but think they sure leave a lot on the table when they exit WWII.   Would've loved to see flyable B-25s and B-26s for their Late War ETO.   And at least AI B-17 and B-24s.

Don't know if Heatblur, ED, or a collaboration made this video but this is how you do it.

This one sold me on the super carrier module.  I'd never even heard the song "Kickstart My Heart" before, but it fits so well and the transition from "Anchors Aweigh" is so well done.

OK here is the power play.

1C lets their team wander off into the "Forgotten War", and buys out HTC to take over IL GB series development.

Possible to merge the best of both products like they absorbed a lot of Rise of Flights tech.  HTC server and management, and FM, IL2 GB graphics and sound.

Never bothered with IL-2 until they added it in Bodenplatte. Not that I'm biased in any way, right? :P Really nice. I don't feel bad at all flying in the ETO with the 80th FS Nulli Secundus skin on it!

I have Flying Iron's P-38 for MSFS. That one is really nicely done too with clickable cockpit if I'm in the mood for the minutia of just starting it up. It's not like an airliner tho--not hard to do. It gets me around sight seeing faster than the Piper Comanche.  :aok

My reaction to eastern front is a lot like my reaction to Korea.  I'm not against it, I'm just...  Meh.  What else you got?

I'm sure there are others who find it really compelling.  That is they way it is.  Different strokes do different folks.  That's why it's good to have lots of viable options to pick from.

I was a Stinger-Guy at Kunsan in the early 90s.  No Team Spirit that year, but I was an Aggressor during FOAL EAGLE at Osan.... MAN that was the funnestest I ever had in the military (It also scared the crap out of me at learning how bad we were at defending Air Bases at that time.)

Eastern Front has just as good if not better matchups than Western Front.

Eastern Front has just as good if not better matchups than Western Front.

Not saying it doesn't.

It's purely an emotional involvement thing.  Eastern front just doesn't resonate with me.  Same with Korea.  As a kid, I never fantasized about being a fighter pilot in the battle of Bodenplatte.  Never heard of it.

But by Cod, I was day dreaming about being a Corsair pilot in Black Sheep.

Plenty of others might like it.  Lots players liked IL2, but that's a big part of why that franchise never clicked for me.  I appreciate it technically, it just doesn't let me playout any of my childhood pilot fantasies.

I first fell in love with WWI pretending I was The Great Waldo Pepper!  ;)

My hot-take which may be off base.

Listening to them talk about how it was decided, they talked about what the devs wanted.  What the devs thought would be easy.  What the devs thought would be fun.  At no time did I hear them mention what the market wanted or what their customer base wanted.  Who was the customer's champion during these internal "referendums"?  Who was there represented in the voting that was focused on what the market wanted?

He mentioned the decision was NOT unanimous.  Odd thing to mention.  That is the time frame Williams left.  He mentions PTO was considered but apparently carriers, like AH has had for a decade, are impossible to implement.  :O  I could imagine a scenario where Williams wanted to go PTO, like he has stated since Kuban, and got "out-voted" by the russian devs.  Maybe that is why he decided to leave.   He probably had a better finger on the pulse of what the market and customer base wanted, but got voted out by the russians.  He didn't decide to go off and do a Korea sim, he went off to do PTO which the russian team rejected.  Just my guess.

I still have found very few current IL2 WWII fans who are thrilled about dropping WWII and moving to Korea.  I'm not sure what kind of marketing research they did, if any.   It's a bold move, Cotton.  We'll have to see how it plays out.

At least with cars and bikes it's not the speed but sudden stop.
