Title: New Chair: Comfort Vs Durability?
Post by: Mayhem on July 23, 2024, 01:03:48 PM
I am about to pull the trigger on a new desk chair.
Not any chair, but a FLIGHT SIM chair made specially for Flight Simmers (As apposed to general gaming or racing sims)
However I am divided between 2 material types on the same chair.

The two chairs I'm looking at are

1) The Monstertech MFC-5 Night Falcon with back 1000D mil-spec fabric for $800+
https://www.mtsim.com/product/flight-chair-mfc-5-night-falcon/ (https://www.mtsim.com/product/flight-chair-mfc-5-night-falcon/)

Or

2) The Monstertech MFC Storm Sheep with real lambkin and PU leather in black for $1100+
https://www.mtsim.com/product/flight-chair-mfc-8-storm-sheep/ (https://www.mtsim.com/product/flight-chair-mfc-8-storm-sheep/)

The MFC-5 is ultra durable I doubt I can kill the fabric. (Pay less last Longer)

The MFC-8 well its sheep skin and fuzy. (Fuzzy comfort and bragging rites)

I'm really divided on these, any one have insights or familiarity with these products?
Any one have experience with similar products?

Which would you choose?

Not sure on comfort but I have Mountain biking shorts with Cordura and they’ve held up fine over the years with a few abrasive crashes here and there. The main thing is, they clean-up well and don’t hold onto stink. Spill a drink or 2 or drop a plate of spaghetti on that chair and you’ll still be good to go with a little Oxyclean and water. The fuzzy lamb skin I’m not so sure about. If it’s anything like sheepskin seat covers and the like, it holds the stank and stains pretty good I’d be wary of that for sure. Plus, I’ll guess the Cordura stays a bit cooler during long gaming sessions and stuff.

You're most likely going to consume snacks and beverages while sitting on that chair. Which one do you think would be easier to keep clean? There's chemicals to protect the upholstery but will they work on fur? I have my doubts...

Chewing gum, chocolate, greasy crumbs of chips, sticky sugar from a spilled coke... Not to mention sweat.

I've had a fabric coated gaming chair for some five years now and can't see any marks of wear. The spec sheet told that it had undergone some standardized wear testing which I gladly believe. Hoovering every now and then is all it needs, only once I've used some upholstery foam cleaner on the seat.

Great idea. Plus, it's dual use and sturdy. It even folds up nice so my wife won't have to look at it.
Sold!

I guess I'm reasonably old at 56 but I still fill in all the permission slips and stuff but mostly we trade non-essentials. "Wow, those are great shoes and that new easel and paints set is great too. I'll be in my office looking at new HOTAS gear. Again, great shoes!"

I use an AK Racing Pro chair. I weight between 260-280 depending on lunch. Most chairs last maybe a year or two. My AK Racing not only has lasted many years the one issue I had 2 years after I bought it AK Racing replaced the part no questions asked as it has a life time warranty. Well worth the money. Wife is happy Im not buying a new chair every year, extra bonus.

That's really just a regular chair with a cutout for a long-mount joystick and Cordura. It seems to me you're paying more for the novelty than the actual functionality.

For that money, I'd rather go with something like this that actually supports all joystick types, HOTAS, and rudder pedals, and has integral mounts.

You can buy a whole cockpit for the cost of the chair you're looking at:

If you want a decent chair that can withstand heavy use and wear and tear, here's the solution.

https://www.kabseating.com/us/office/products/office-range

The price may seem high for a one-off purchase, but the durability and quality of the product will ensure years of use.

My son has had this Navigator Office Chair since 2014 and bought it 2 years second hand.
The only failure has been one of the wheels getting stuck and that was fixed by replacing all the wheels (~25$), again extending the life.

I have had that Director Office Chair since 2021 and have found nothing to complain about. Still like new.
And I can sit in it for really long days without getting tired.

For the Record I will be connecting this to the chair ....

https://virpil-controls.us.com/rotor-tcs-plus-apache-64-collective-bundle.html (https://virpil-controls.us.com/rotor-tcs-plus-apache-64-collective-bundle.html)

I'm getting one of these two chairs. I'm going to be getting it with the locks and center fill. The only device I will connecting to it will be the AH64 Collective for now which is why I'm getting the removable center cut out fill, If I want to center mount my Stick or attach my thottle at a later date I can but right now I only want to attach the collective.

I already have two regular Monstertech deskmounts and a long monstertech Deskmount.

I got mine today and it's pretty comfortable. I sit a little higher than my old chair so I need to raise my monitor a bit. I brought a couple kettle bells and a rubber band device in from the garage. They stow pretty nice right next to it in the closet when not in use.

Just need a margarita machine in the office and I'm all set.

I love the damn things. I don't mind being called a Nancy for it either, leaves more for me. We like to make a pitcher on Fridays and watch the grass grow from the patio. About to go pull the blender out in a bit.

I can imagine why the margaritas are popular, as you spin twirl and glide on your wheeled chair. I can't use it, so I opted for a sturdy office chair which I can hold steady my favorite beverage.

Just for the record I got the Monstertech MFC-5 Night Falcon with back 1000D mil-spec fabric for $800+
https://www.mtsim.com/product/flight-chair-mfc-5-night-falcon/

I got it with the center cut out fill, Desk to Chair mount conversion kits for both sides and center and the Collective mount for the Virpil AH64 Collective.

Shipping was a PITA Due to a SNAFU! However Monstertech made it up to me by including a free center desk to chair mount conversion kit that they don't sell yet.

I didn't get all my ordered stuff until the end of February 2025, I ordered it back on black Friday 2024 but Monstertech did make it up to me.

I currently have it set up so I can easily remove/attach my Virpil AH64 Apache Collective with Rotor Plus base. All my other controllers are on their deskmounts for now.

Awesome chair -- Beats the heck out of my expensive ergo chair (and only cost about a third more)

Only concern is the seat is really firm but many people like their chairs like that. If you have Sciatica you will want a cushion for this chair.

I'll post an update and some pictures in a few weeks I'm starting a major upgrade and I'm doing some work to my Den.

No but I think the do have a leather one plus the two sheepskins. I almost went went the Black SheepSkin, but At $800+ ($250+ MORE than my old chair) I need this to be extremely tough and last FOREVER so I went with the black 1000D mil-spec Cordura.

If at all possible, try to visit/sit in a chair before you buy it. I probably would've gone with something different if I'd had that option.

I used a $99.00 chair from Frys for probably 10 years. Replaced the base/strut due to wear. Replaced the seat/arms due to wear once. It had flip up arms, which were great for playing guitar. Chair was good until I started working from home, spending 10-12 hours a day in it. After a while it started killing my lower back.

After a lot of research I went with a Secretlab Titan. Upsides, it's comfortable. Seat is big enough that even though the arms don't flip up, I can shift a bit sideways for playing guitar. Downsides, there is zero friction adjustment for reclining. It's like sitting on a knife edge where if you lean back quickly, you're going completly back with some velocity. To the extent that initially I had a fear of tipping the chair over backwards. Big downside, their support is some of the worst I've ever dealt with.
